A lot of the negative reviews seem to bash the movie because it lacks humor, and according to some, doesnt "get" Superman? Like Donner's Superman is a reference....
Well, Donner's movie is an amazing Superman movie, so it's hard not to compare it to its predecessors.

With all the early buzz, I was actually a bit scared that this movie would be the next TDK, and everybody would start talking crap about Donner's movie. In a way, I'm glad that's not the case, but I do wish this was received a little better.

Oh well, I'll just have to judge for myself when I see it sometime this weekend.

Man of Steel does have those moments. I laughed just as many times as I did during any of Nolan's Batman movies.

That's good. Many people (hopefully) will. Hardly anyone in the screenings I was in did, though, aside from the Lois/Supes interrogation scene. The humor fell flat

I think the thing is people for the most part don't consider Supes to be as dark so naturally they'd expect more humor than what you'd expect in a Bats film.

The funny part is he hasn't seen it.

Everytime I go see a movie, which is a lot, I always look at the review score on RT and IMDB before I go. I can tell you right now, the amount of times I thought the critics were flat out wrong, cannot even be counted on one hand.

Now there are instances where critics bashed a film and when I saw it, I still enjoyed it. However my expectations weren't high, and I still agreed with the criticisms the film received.

So with all that being said, given the 10+ year track record of all this, when I see the biggest movie I've looked forward to for years now get mixed reviews, and they're all saying the same thing, then yes I'm gonna expect i'll be disappointed. I won't say for a fact that I will, but that there's an overwhelming possibility that I will.

Some (non spoiler) good parts I liked seeing as folks are heartbroken already.

-All the Jorel parts are great!
-The scene where Superman is floating above the tanks, the way he speaks to the general is total superman. Would have liked to see more floating scenes.
-How Faora relishes her powers and uses them way better than any other Kryptonian is great.
-They finally gave Superman cool Eye beams. Not crappy microwaves. His eyes glow in anger which is "WIN".

.....Or you may enjoy the hell out of it like some of the other people here? Like seriously, wait until you see the film. To speak of an "overwhelming possibility" of anything is ridiculous when you haven't seen it. Wait and see. Is that too much to ask?

I'll just say it, S:TM is a piece of Americana. It has been for the past few decades. Some of the younger kids may not get it and people internationally may not all have the hardcore love for it, but it's what a lot of people here in the U.S. grew up on akin to a Star Wars for them, hence why some may feel apt to dismiss anything different from that.

Maybe that's why the UK reviewers have scored the film highly. Even though S:TM was popular over here (it was filmed at Pinewood), we might not have that close attachment to the character. But we've got James Bond, with 6 different actors/interpretations via 23 films. I hope Man of Steel becomes successful, so that audiences can adapt to a different intreptation, especially in future Superman films.

I remember with The Amazing Spider-man, even though the film wasn't perfect, some reviewers went in hating the film already, saying after viewing the film that it's not like Raimi's Spider-man  eventually people have to move on, look at Batman 89 then The Dark Knight with a different interpretation of the Joker.

Superman Returns was a continuation of the Donner film, so some reviewers are going in to see Man of Steel using a 35 year old film a template, (excluding the filmmaking problems like character and editing in MOS).

i can care less about RT scores, there are too many glowing reviews out there from actual superman fans to buy that its bad. Even the negative reviews seem to highlight stuff im actually happy about, lack of humor(good!), less of a love story (hell yes!), too focused on superman/clark (thank you god!), too serious (about time!)

Amen! Preach it! :woot:

I for one have never let RT sway me one way or another whether I want to see something or not. I go see what I want to see regardless of reviews whether from professional reviewers or friends opinions.

Is the humor like that bit from the TV spot, where a female soldier says something like "I just think he's kinda hot"?

I hope I like it, I really do. I'm gonna go into the movie with my fingers crossed. But i'm sure there's gonna be some things that disappoint me.

That's literally the worst line in the movie. So bad. Can't imagine how it got past the first draft.

Correcto. These movies can't be devoid of humor unless your the black nail polish and eyeliner wearing type. ;)

superman has never really been a funny character unless ur referring to the donner films where they made clark a dork. They can leave the funny stuff for the sequels if they introduce Jimmy Olsen, plus im guessin he joins the Daily Planet at the end so there will be more playful banter between Clark and Lois. Let us have a more serious film to start this franchise out, why force humor in there. I hate when superhero films try to make light of horrific situations, throw around jokes while a city is being destroyed (avengers)

^That happens in the books all the time, man.

You know what? It's probably not the worst thing if you go in with expectations lowered, it might just help you enjoy it more.

You're completely missing the point. No one is asking for Seth Rogen to show up cracking jokes. Levity. People wanted more levity.

Sad to hear you didn't like it :csad:
Who do you think should be blamed for the movie? Snyder? Goyer? The cast?

Most big action movies make light on such situations to various degrees. In a battle like it sounds there is in Metropolis in MOS things would probably get Thin Red Line depressing if the repercussions were actually taken into account.

Same here. most of the superhero movies' humor is just garbage they throw because they either think it's helpful or they're just told to.

And that sometimes works in a comic, but rarely in a movie.

No, we're not asking for lap slapping one liners just not make a Superman film so friggin dark. He's not Batman.

Agreed. The fact that its in every TV spot in the last month gives me the feeling the studio suits saw that the film wasn't tracking well with female audiences, and shoehorned it into all their ads to smack women on the head on the fact that Cavil is attractive.:o

If I know me, which I do, i'm probably gonna love the acting, the score, the visuals, and most of all the action. The pacing and story however is where i'm setting my expectations pretty low.

Even though I feel it's unfair to point fingers at one person (because the majority of the issues were script related), Snyder is ultimately to blame. That's the burden of being the director, you garner all the praise or all the criticism because at the end of the day it's *your* film
