Saw MOS Tuesday and wrote an extensive review. Let me know what you think.

Didn't read the entire review, due to not spoiling it for myself, but did read the last 3 "final conclusions" you wrote. Very well said, seems to be the same thing most who love the film say... Just let off the gas a bit, and let the story take control!

Personally, I feel WB got so traumatized by people saying SR didn't have enough action, that they may have put too much action into this one not allowing the story or the characters to flourish enough as they should.

And that seems to be the consensus, with haters and non haters alike.

BTW where is "Showtime" and "Jamie"???? Haven't heard a dang thang from them in atleast a week!

It seems that the main complaint is that the action detracts from character dvpt, I can understand that, but it's always a problem with origin movies no? Finding the right balance, and make it all fit, seeing how the movie seems to be spending quite some time on Krypton, that alone eats up like 20 min of the movie (from what I read), I like the flashback idea, it's a smart way to introduce moments of Kal El's life. They probably wanted to really grace the audience with massive action, because yeah, as told, Superman Returns had none.

It's always a complaint with many movies though, especially blockbusters, secondary characters lacking dvpt, and it's understandable, you focus on the main character, his quest, because this is his origin story, the character is forming itself, it's his beginnings. BB doesnt have a ton of character dvpt for secondary characters by the way too, think of Rachel, Lucius, etc. What you do is give them defining traits, but you can't give them a lot with time constraints.

Of course, I'm waiting to see the movie, but maybe, they should have scaled back the Krypton stuff, or made the movie longer. I relish in the idea though to see more Krypton, this is going to be awesome. I just love superhero action as well, so I think in the end, I won't be annoyed by that, we'll probably see more character dvpt in the sequel.

Thing is MOS is giving Jor-El a much bigger place, same with Pa Kent, Ma Kent, same with Zod (contrary to Superman II where you can't get more one dimensional then that), then you get Faora, Lois Lane, plus other characters. It's trying to do much more and bigger than all the other Superman movies combined.

Writing a script is really hard, trying to find the balance, I'm doing one myself right now, I can't go past 30 minutes of movie (short movie), and it's kind of nightmarish to find the balance, and fit what you want in it, choose which character to leave aside, which one to develop, make it compelling.

So you type all this without seeing the movie yet??? Really?

lol. fanboy's mind is too easily manipulated. i guess.

61%- is it fair to assume it will stabilise around here?

I am not in the camp that seeks to cast aspersions at reviewers with whose opinions I hope to disagree, but some of the collated reasoning in the negative reviews does tell a tale, even when viewed objectively. Many are quite open in saying that the film confounded their expectations. I don't think it is unfair to say that it requires a rather pedestrian mindset to treat that as an inherently negative experience.

So I'm guessing this will be more of a modest entry into a new franchise like ASM rather than an outright success on every level like Batman Begins or Casino Royale. I can live with that...I mean hate ASM all you want they giving us a sequel next year so it's a win all around for them. Heres hoping MoS actually makes money to justify their premature greenlight.

I'm trying to find a reason, if all the reviews say this, then it probably does lack character dvp, I then extrapolate. What Goyer is trying to do is tricky, and it seems the action according to some people detracts from the characters.

Or I'm full of it?

What's weird at the moment with RT is it seems there are only rotten reviews coming in, maybe they're all coming at once :D

None of it matters once you've seen the thing, you'll either agree with the reviews and then have no reason to complain about them, or you won't agree with them at all and find no cause for concern.

The real worry lies on Sunday when the BO numbers pour in.

I think I agree with Jake, your quite full of it! Come back at me once you have seen it, then we can talk. :)

the premature greenlight can be axed if the BO is poor. just like SR. ;)

Strange how the general audience didn't really connect with SR, yet critics liked it ............ and now we're getting the opposite effect with MOS. Some critics have been very harsh, yet anyone I know (non-critic) who has seen it has loved it.

That seems to be how it goes a lot of the time.

if this is really the case, i would say "go hell the critic!!!" :D seriously.

Personally, a lot of the critics that I follow have more or less gushed over the film, I'm still waiting on a few of them (including a known snyder-hater), but I'm far more convinced that I'll like the film from their opinion than I am from the opinions of..say the Salon review or Rex Reed (who if anything always writes the most entertaining scathing reviews ever)

That being said...I can't begin to count how many times I've gone in a film with that same "screw the critics" mindset only to walk out actually agreeing with nearly every point they've made.

It's natural I guess. Most critics analyse films for a living, we just go watch them for entertainment.

A superhero summer blockbuster is not going to tick every box for every critic, even if 99% of the general public are blown away by it.

Meanwhile:

#ManOfSteel breaks all-time opening day record in Philippines WED w/ $1.7M from 466 thtrs & 90% mkt share.

Another thing that pisses me off about that mindset from many people is that it only appears when the critics disagree with the movie you personally like (or want to like).

If MOS was getting into the high 80's or 90's on RT people here would be raving with joy. How many times has critical acclaim been brought up when fans bring up the avengers or TDK?

You dont think we know that? LOL, of course we do. I gotta say, to give another pt of view to what Sharkboy says, I've been in constant conflict with RT recently.

Only God Forgives is at 29 % (not a lot of reviews though) and I like it. The Great Gatsby is at 50 % and I think it's a fantastic movie, Gangster Squad at 32 %, when imo, it's a pretty decent movie. Oz at 59 %, should be lower. The Hangover Part III at 20 %, I love it and think it's the best of the three.

Otherwise, RT pretty much always mirrored my opinion, but it's getting gradually different.

It's hard to say screw the critics when they are all raving about a film you want to love, but technically it works the other way too. How many films have you walked in expecting to love only to walk out largely disappointed. Everyone has their own pre concieved notions and expectations when it comes to anticipated films.

I think that's a very good way of putting it. WB asked, "Who is a special effects guru that is smarter than Michael Bay and can give some beautiful visuals." Zack Snyder, come on down!

There's a lot to like in the movie and I think a lot of Superman buffs will enjoy it. It's definitely unlike any Superman movie before it.
