You dont think we know that? LOL, of course we do. I gotta say, to give another pt of view to what Sharkboy says, I've been in constant conflict with RT recently.

Only God Forgives is at 29 % (not a lot of reviews though) and I like it. The Great Gatsby is at 50 % and I think it's a fantastic movie, Gangster Squad at 32 %, when imo, it's a pretty decent movie. Oz at 59 %, should be lower. The Hangover Part III at 20 %, I love it and think it's the best of the three.

Otherwise, RT pretty much always mirrored my opinion, but it's getting gradually different.

You've seen Only God Forgives?! Tons of people here are crying about 60% score for MOS, but OGF is my most anticipated film of the year, only for it to be smacked with bad reviews all over...how do you think I feel? :funny:

Gatsby seems to be a prime example of a film that critics pan but the audience generally seem to take very well to. It was a very fun film to watch if not a bit on the shallow end.

This isn't like ASM.

ASM divided fanboys and appeased most critics.

MOS divided the critics and appeases most fanboys (so it seems).

But i think both will end up with an 80% fresh user rating and 700+ m WW.

I hope to enjoy MOS when i see it on friday but there's a small part of me and i'm sure it's the same with many here who hoped for that sort of "official" recognition of it being a good film by it getting good reviews as well.

It sort of completes the package. It was great knowing that a cb film i loved TDK was actually seen as one of the better general films around. I'm sure big avengers fans felt that way as well, bond fans for skyfall etc.

#ManOfSteel breaks all-time opening day record in Philippines WED w/ $1.7M from 466 thtrs & 90% mkt share.

And people said WB didnt market this movie hardly at all OS. This is great news for us MOS fans. I can see this being the MOVIE to beat for future June releases. I think its going to be well over 100m come the weekend

I'm still standing firm at 120 m.

The haters won't make me budge.

Too many memories of tracking sites underestimating superhero movies.

It seems that the main complaint is that the action detracts from character dvpt, I can understand that, but it's always a problem with origin movies no? Finding the right balance, and make it all fit, seeing how the movie seems to be spending quite some time on Krypton, that alone eats up like 20 min of the movie (from what I read), I like the flashback idea, it's a smart way to introduce moments of Kal El's life. They probably wanted to really grace the audience with massive action, because yeah, as told, Superman Returns had none.

It's always a complaint with many movies though, especially blockbusters, secondary characters lacking dvpt, and it's understandable, you focus on the main character, his quest, because this is his origin story, the character is forming itself, it's his beginnings. BB doesnt have a ton of character dvpt for secondary characters by the way too, think of Rachel, Lucius, etc. What you do is give them defining traits, but you can't give them a lot with time constraints.

Of course, I'm waiting to see the movie, but maybe, they should have scaled back the Krypton stuff, or made the movie longer. I relish in the idea though to see more Krypton, this is going to be awesome. I just love superhero action as well, so I think in the end, I won't be annoyed by that, we'll probably see more character dvpt in the sequel.

Thing is MOS is giving Jor-El a much bigger place, same with Pa Kent, Ma Kent, same with Zod (contrary to Superman II where you can't get more one dimensional then that), then you get Faora, Lois Lane, plus other characters. It's trying to do much more and bigger than all the other Superman movies combined.

Writing a script is really hard, trying to find the balance, I'm doing one myself right now, I can't go past 30 minutes of movie (short movie), and it's kind of nightmarish to find the balance, and fit what you want in it, choose which character to leave aside, which one to develop, make it compelling.

Tim, I'd never make light of the screenwriting process. I have written a few screenplays and it's a fun challenge. That said, the more you work on it, the better you should get and this isn't David S. Goyer's first rodeo. It's one thing to say, "We're not going to spend a ton of time on Lois' character until a sequel." It's a completely different thing to not give her any defining traits other than as a headstrong reporter. As an origin story, it's Clark's time to shine but you could easily throw in a line here or there offering some back story on her. For example, if Clark explains that he feels alone or tells her something about his family, she could say, "I understand. My parents did so and so," or explain that she's an only child, whatever, to show that, even though he's an alien, they share common ground. Stuff like that doesn't take a lot of time, and it works on two levels by connecting her to Clark and goes a long way towards the audience gravitating towards a character.

And trust me, the movie would drag if it was any longer.

Bet money when this movie starts making bank you will see more and more critics and fans changing their minds about this movie. For some reason when a movie is successful all the haters and people who rode the negativity train want to jump back on board. I say if you think MOS is a terrible movie thats fine but dont come back with the "well after seeing it again I thinks the best film ever" or "I misjudged it..its not as bad as I thought"....we dont wanna hear it

Didn't stop people from hating Transformers.

They didn't market it at all in Asia, the numbers are due to Superman's popularity and other people's popularity associated with the production (Nolan, Zimmer, Goyer, Snyder.)

Hey, just a question... do they say Zod's full name, Dru-Zod? I guess they didn't because "Drew Zod" sounds non-intimidating.

Saw MOS Tuesday and wrote an extensive review. Let me know what you think.

Fantastic review, written superbly

Can I just say though I understand that some people feel Amy Adams Lois Lane character is somewhat underused but may I add that this is Clark's movie. I believe (although I'm yet to see it) that they want us to invest in Clark before we invest in Superman (much like Batman Begins did with Bruce Wayne). I truly believe all the Superman mythos we love (Daily Planet, Clark the disguise, Lois, etc) when he's established in Metropolis will come to fruition in the sequel. I am wondering if we get say a trilogy aka the Dark Knight will the people who reviews this negatively look back on it more fondly once the bigger picture has been revealed. Lets hope it makes enough dollars to give those people and us the chance to see more of that in future films.

Did anyone complain that they wanted to see more of Vicki Vale in Batman' 89 ?

It's been a trend the last 2-3 years to say the female lead's role is underwritten/underdeveloped. Personally, I don't get it.

THis is true... It's worse than not marketing it.. they basically ignored it in Asia... No matter how much this movie pulls in Overseas, it could have done a lot better with some minor marketing to get people out...

There weren't even coming soon posters until very recently..

Superman will still be successful in Asia due to his Name Recognition... (from my mom, who's almost 80, to my nephews and nieces who are kids)...

BTW: The first weekend's tickets (Fri-Sun) basically sold out in Malaysia as well (for the main time slots, 6pm-11pm)...

Me either especially in a film that's about the journey of Clark Kent/Kal El.

Yeah I do kinda agree with that, and admit I did that with TDKR, went to see it first, didn't like it, then saw everyone raving about it, saw it second time and convinced myself the little bits I liked were enough and forced myself in a way to be on board. Then though after third viewing, I did finally admit to myself how I felt! I just hope this time I love MOS first time, and stay that way!

Thank you very much for reading it and for the kind words. One thing I should mention in the review (not a spoiler) is that Russell Crowe has a considerable amount of time on-screen and they use him in a very clever way.

The story invests a ton of time in Clark, as it should, and he's easy to like in the film. I definitely didn't want Clark's story to ever take a backseat, but a few lines about Lois that are built around Clark's dialogue would have gone a long way. Every scene with Lois centers around her trying to learn about Superman or following him. (I won't give spoilers, don't worry.) I'm not kidding when I say there is nothing given to the viewer beyond "She is a reporter."

And this movie is going to make a killing, even with mixed reviews.

Yeah I've heard Crowe's role is quite large, some have even said he stole the movie.

Well it's good to see they got the reporter aspect right :cwink:. Still though her tracking down Superman is a tally very faithful to the comics.

I do honestly think that if we get a sequel that this film might be more fondly looked back on when we can see a larger picture.

Well, back in the day as a wee lad, more of Kim Basinger in anything was a plus to me. Jokes aside, there is no comparison to what Vale is in the Bat mythos and what Lois is to Superman.

Woah now, Vicki Vale is hardly Lois Lane. I mean Lois is quite possibly the most important supporting character in Superman lore...Vicki is just another in a long line of Bruce's sexy time friends.

How many Critics have actually read Superman Comics ?

To them,

Vicki Vale is a love interest and a news reporter similarly, Lois Lane is a love interest and a news reporter.

Eh, it's not the same thing. Even general audiences know that Lois' importance to Superman is very big, akin to Catwoman's to Batman.

Yeah, I know right ? :woot:

I was thinking maybe Critics don't.
