TMOS Reviews Thread - Non Spoiler Review and Discussion - Part 7

Is a gross amount of action all you guys really needed to like this movie?

They probably should have just made the last 40-minutes of it a video game. Weird thing is...I think we've seem better action...at least more creative...in superhero video game trailers. This was mostly throwing and crashing through buildings. ;)

motown you must have missed my other posts on other aspects. I was commenting on action based on kalmarts comment.

I wasn't directing that at you or anyone in particular. Just a general reaction to the posts I've seen around here. I'm genuinely confused as to how anyone can see anything successful in this movie. It was such a train wreck to me on almost every level. It didn't just fail as a superman movie...it just straight up fails as a movie.

Looks like since the movie opened, and Audience shows that they liked it a lot, the Critics' score have slowly climbed back up to 59% from 56%...

Does this mean that many critics are just 'copycats'.. when they first see the rottens, they follow suit, and now they see the positive reviews from fans, they follow that too? I hope so, cause then we'll surely get back to 'fresh' before long...

I think the comments about action may also be a result of feeling deprived in some regards by the lack of physical opponents in SR. As noted many times, Routh didn't even get to throw a punch.

If you are a Superman fan, and mostly into the modern comics as well as TAS I am quite sure you will enjoy MOS.
That's me, right there. I wasn't much of a fan until TAS. It reminded me of JLU at times. Maybe it was the mass destruction. Like from the series finale.
I think the GA will eat this up...

kalmart I thought the special effects were fantastic but maybe you have a more precise eye for such things. I just know it worked for me, and the entire audience clapped at the end. Lots of comments were being made about "most action in a movie ever" from multiple people. Just saying

Y'know...I was actually thinking that as I watched it. I'm actually pretty deep in working on a few films right now, one of which I was overseeing some VFX so I might have had the 'microscopes' on, but I feel we've seen considerably better fro other films already. The action I felt just got rather mindless at a certain point....or at least monotonous with all the punching/crashing. Dynamically, I thin they could have added more variety. there were a few polite claps in an rather full house at my theater here in NYC, but altogether felt pretty standard-fare action.

I know this is a Supes thread, but. . .I just had to.

This amount of action simply wouldn't work in any other SH film. For Supes, it does. Also, don't act like there's no emotion to this movie. There clearly is, they just don't spoon-feed you it through a tube. The emotion-side of it was fine for me. I have no issue the way they used flashbacks to tell his story. If you don't like flashbacks that break up the continuity of the story, you may not agree but I saw what they did and it worked on my end.

You're right.. I think critics have forgotten the main reason people go to the movies.. 'to escape daily lives and be entertained for a couple hours'.. so, if it's entertaining, the audience would love it.. they don't usually judge it too harsly based on so many 'points that a movie maker should follow'... it's not an exam... it's just 'enjoyable or not'..

For that reason, I loved Fast 6 as well.. it's a no brainer.. you leave all logic behind and just go for the fun ride...

That's what I'm saying !!! It's why I see movies by myself now. I seriously used to go see movies all the time with my buddy and he (and I love him don't get me wrong) would INSIST and ruining every movie..not with a scathing review AFTER the movie, but during! It's really annoying. During one of the last times I saw a movie with him it was a very crowd pleasing triumphant moment and he started a really loud, really abnoxious fake clap and started going "Ohhhhhh YAYYYYY!!!" and rolling his eyes and scoffing.

So yeah, I'm fine not listening to people and their bs sometimes. I guess just coming onto this message board and seeing something completely unexpected as "Hey guys, this movie blew" reaaaally threw me off after like months of wine, roses, and rainbows with this movie.

*gulp* ah well...in some small amount of hours I will find out for myself.

.....I still really think I should just stick to watching all the trailers and TV spots and just making up the movie I wanted in my head lol! :awesome::facepalm:

You are defensively making so many assumptions about my issues with the movie.

Forgive me, my eyes are very tired. Tone over the internet is hard to come by these days. I didn't mean as such. If I came off that way, I apologize.

I can totally see where you are coming from with that logic. I mean, there was a ton of action in the last 45 minutes really. I think (for me) it was partly why I felt MOS worked though. We have seen what he can do with fights in the animated medium, but in modern times we have not seen anything in this area. You gotta remember that in SR he didn't throw a punch. While I enjoy that movie (I know it is polarizing for some) I really think physical villains are essential to a live action Superman. It was like "YES ABOUT TIME TO SEE SUPES THROW DOWN!"

Have you laid out your issues with the movie? All I've seen is groaning and the occasional jab. Have you typed up a review?

It's cool, dude.

Right now, at 4am, while in complete disbelief over how awful the movie is...I'm not even sure it's worth it.

Just watched it. I have mixed feelings about it. The beginning was excellent,Krypton is gorgeous but scary at the same time. Crowe is great as Jor - El and Shannon was an awesome villain. But then , the movie becomes an editing mess that could or can confuse the GA.

Pros:
- Visual effects
- Krypton
- Crowe, Costner are awesome as Superman's dads

Cons:
- Editing
- Cavill ( Physically the man is impressive, the biggest Superman by far, but IMO Reeve and Routh were better )
- Fighting scenes are a huge mess and quite tiresome
- The music score didn't impress me at all.

For me:

STM: 9
S2: 7
S2DC: 9
S3: 4
S4: 2
SR: 8
MOS: 6

MOS is not awful, but it could've bee so much better, maybe next time guys.

You know something? In this particular case, I can say personally speaking, after the previous attempt at Superman (actually...all attempts ever made, save for the brilliant Animated Superman that came out in '96) I could most definately see 2, no **** it, 3 hours of Superman and Zod battling each other and just sheer destruction and explosions and...screw it, lasers, you name it! I remeber seeing Superman Returns and wanting to gouge my eyes out with my own dick.

Now some movies have JUST action and it becomes too much and just numbing, I get disinterested if the story isn't there you know?

In this particular instance? Bring that g-damn action on son!

EXACTLY... but thank god my friends are like me... we just like movies..... in general.. there are those that definitely deserves critisizing though.. like After Earth for example.. I almost fell asleep several times...

With that amount of money they spent on the movie, they could have installed solar panels for 15,000 homes, getting everyone free energy...

You know....fair enough, dude. I disagree with you completely and feel superman deserves soooo much more. But if two super dudes brawling is all you wanted and needed, this is the best movie for you.

I'd like to know why you really hate this film. Most reviewers had something positive to say whether they enjoyed the film or not. Your saying it's completely awful so it has me curious.

Maybe in the morning. Right now, I'm going to bed. But what very few positives I found in the film are completely irrelevant due to how overwhelmingly bad everything else was.

Mine as well. Packed too. Midnight showing though not sold out, I'd say 85% full but shown in 3 theaters. Dude next to me was up on the edge of his seat with his mouth open the whole time, lawls.

Ah, what a relief. A truly inspiring Superman film for me personally. I generally do believe the GA will eat it up.

My friend just posted on facebook how his crowd went absolutely ballistic (in a bad way) because the theater showed a bunch of old trailers in his showing…INCLUDING the Man of Steel trailer itself.

Then when it went dark and the movie started?

…it was Star Trek: Into Darkness. :o

There is literally, maybe 10-15 mins at most of that. Where are people getting that there was this boatload of time spent on hand to hand combat?

The action, outside of the Krypton scenes, is very low key until the third act. And even then there is plenty of plot and character.

Just came back from watching this. This is definitely a movie that fans will enjoy more than critics it seems. I really liked the movie. It was definitely a new take on superman and I felt like I was in another world. I saw it in 3D IMAX here in Chicago, maybe that is why. The action was amazing in IMAX, and I really liked it. General Zod and Faora were awesome in this. Cavil did a good job too as Superman. I thought the movie went in a very fast pace, so that may be a setback to some. I didn't think it was completely devoid of emotion like some of the reviews say, but this is only my opinion. Superman fans who want a different take from the classics will definitely enjoy this movie IMO. I give it a 8.5/10. Oh and a ton of people clapped at the end of the movie.
