Wonder Woman Box Office Speculation Thread - Part 5

Wonder Woman was received well by general audience in BvS, I think it helped Gal in Wonder Woman movie, her guest appearance in BvS generated some interest in the character. Note that Marvel Studios did the same thing for Black Panther and Spider-Man, they introduced them in Civil War and after that, both characters are getting their own solo movies.

MoS and SS did not have any direct influence on WW movie apart from taking off the pressure to over-perform as all earlier movies (MoS, SS, BvS) did reasonably well at B.O. So, in the event of Wonder Woman earning around 5oo mil would sufficed for WB or at least that's what I assume.

So that means Monday came in a bit lower, but the 4-day weekend as a whole actually came in a bit higher compared to earlier estimates.

 

Yeap! It was $495,000, but total of $409,499,021.

 

Update on Japan from corpse:

He still thinks it makes it to around $15 million.

 

Good.

Even if it gets close to $ 15M, I will be happy, but to get there the movie will have to be leggy.

Hell Yeah. I'm glad things are looking good on the Japanese front. Anything in the vicinity of 15 million will please the f**k outta me.

 

IIRC, his specific gripe was in relation to Atomic Blonde (which was not bad but did underperform somewhat). Scott argued that if people wanted to see more female-led action films, they needed to support that sub-genre more broadly, and if that was the goal, buying a ticket to one showing of AB was more valuable than buying one to your fifth showing of WW.

 

So far it's acting pretty much exactly like BvS in Japan. Opening weekend was 76.27% of BvS's opening weekend. Total after the 2nd weekend(if it's exactly $7.4M) is 76.29% of BvS's total after its 2nd weekend.

Wonder Woman's 2nd weekend of $1.5M is very close to 76.29% of BvS's 2nd weekend as well($1.51M). Neglegible difference in trajectory at this piont. It if keeps following BvS it ends with $12.6M. Maybe the holidays on 18-22 September can stretch its legs a bit more.

But ¥1.5 billion is $13.78M, not $15M.

Sunday was big with $800,126, and Monday dropped 40.1% from Sunday. Bigger than the usual average for Labor day, but still better than the comparison I was using: Jurassic World dropped 40.4% on Labor Day, so its still keeping up with Jurassic World. And as long as it does that it's still on track to reach the 4x multiplier.

The success of this film has little, if anything, to do with the previous films.

The 870M+ movie called BvS helped to give exposure to Gal and the character of WW, and drew awareness and interest from general audiences, and the familiarity helps the WW's awareness.

The success is mainly due to Patty, Johns, Gal etc, but it'd be unfair to wipe out ANY contribution from Gal's BvS cameo.

Like Micromind said, that's one of the reasons why Marvel used Spidey in Civil War, advertise the new version, and Black Panther, to boost awareness of his solo movie.

and yes, if WB rebooted, the first films will be called Batman, Suicide Squad (made $$$), Superman, and Aquaman/Wan will be cancelled.

If the producer/director of the previous films hadn't pushed for a WW film and casted Gal, we might not even have a WW today, maybe not for another few years, and Gal has delivered in the movie, it's proven now, but we would not know if another actress would have delivered like her - it's an unknown factor.

Granted, WW's success is mostly due to the good people who worked on the actual film.

Like Zant said, if WB got so scared and listened to the fanboys, rebooted the whole thing after BvS or SS (which was very profitable) - there's gonna be another few years of re-planning, hiring, negotiation, filming and the first film is definitely not going to be called Wonder Woman. His point is, WB persisted, made course-corrections, fired some people, stopped meddling with the directors, and it worked critically and financially, now we get WW, WW2 and Aquaman etc, there are calls for more female directors and employees, which is good.

So WW dropped 70.35% from Monday. JW dropped 77.7% on the Tuesday after the Labor Day weekend. In terms of absolute figures, the estimate narrowly beats JW for the Tuesday after the LD Monday [142k>>141.89k] (the actuals for Wonder Woman should come in a bit lower tho). JW had a huge head-start from Monday and WW coming close to JW's Tuesday is a great result. This is fantastic.

But seriously tho, the 71.6 % drop from Monday is amazing and it's better than the drop JW managed on the Tuesday after LD Monday (77.7%). The interesting story nao is to see whether WW can remain above 100k. If WW drops like JW on Wednesday, it'll collect around 106k. Which means WW will hafta drop 5.66% or less on Thursday in order to stay above 100k. This will be a fun to follow.

Hmm, I sympathize a bit, but ultimately, the average movie-goer does not pick their movies based on what causes they wish to support. They pick their movies based on what movies they want to watch. And given Atomic Blonde is a different movie in almost every imaginable way, I am pretty sure the only people buying tickets for WW instead were people who weren't particularly interested in watching AB.

 

I don't know, arguably taking the prior movies as a model of what not to do, and proceeding to do something better, is. . . *sort of* a debt owed to the prior movies.
