Look I'm very well versed in the X-Men lore...
It's still not making any sense. None of the movie FC were original X-Men except for Beast and they'd have to be really reaching to say any of the others epecially Darwin or the Hellfire Club were in any connection to the "first class" at all.
Wasn't it you who were complaining they didn't follow the comics enough and now you think they are following little known anecdotal references of characters?
Even if that was their intention nothing about the execution points to it having the connections you say other than the uniforms. And Angel didn't even become a beta version of the X-men either so it still is a pretty dumb comparison.
Most of these characters were picked because Singer and Vaughn liked the power displays they would get from them.
i think both fo you are right and wrong personally...
1) FC was a conceptualized as a prequel to the OT ... so there's no way any of the OT roster would have been used aside from Beast (thus why beast is used)
2) It's no surprise that Havok and Banshee were used considering they were some of the only early generation Xmen left..
3) Angel S was not used as a play on for Angel. Vaughn liked the character and there really wasn't a whole lot of females left to dig from either.. couple that with wanting more ethnicity, and needing a flyer... it made sense.
4) Darwin was a new, popular mutant in the comics at the time the film was being made, and only survivor aside from vulcan, of the "forgotten x-men team" he made sense and fit well into the time period. I doubt he was chosen souly on powers.. because they served little purpose to the story.
Here's a list of X-men in order of recruitment and what real options they could have used... (crossed out means logically wouldn't use)

the only real flying Brotherhood member left was Angel... and a character that Vaughn not only wanted.. but fit in best with what they wanted to showcase.
