The Dark Knight Rises You Have My Permission To Lounge - Part 1

Comic Book Resources posted their review. The summation of their review;

Overambitious and overlong, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" aims to tell a collection of stories instead of focusing on one. In doing so, it underserves its classic characters, undercuts its battle scenes, and disrespects the audience who has been waiting decades to see this epic showdown on the big screen.

If BvS was originally imagined at being 3 hours or longer, then I think that could be the main reason for the 'choppy' feel some are talking about.

My exact problem with MoS... piss poor editing

I have to give myself a pat on the back for one thing. I don't have the post to point to prove it unfortunately, but when the CC dropped last summer, the first thing I told my buddy after we watched it was, "There's going to be a 3 hour director's cut of the movie". Just that trailer alone looked so busy, I had a feeling this was going to be another Watchmen situation.

Similarly as it did with Watchmen, I fully expect the director's cut of BvS to generate a whole second conversation about the movie. So in a sense, the movie gets a second chance. At least with the fans.

In a way, I'll be jealous because I feel Rises deserved the same thing. But at the same time, I respect the decision to have the theatrical version be the one, authoritative version of the movie. There's something a little more pure about that.

Anyhow...can't say I'm surprised to see the mixed/negative critical response. Even given my own worries about Snyder, I still intend on going in with an open mind, taking it for what it is and then coming to my own conclusion.

I'm back to lowered expectations mode though, which might be a good thing.

Editing, dialogue and cinematography were my nitpicks. I loved the first 20 minutes on Krypton more than the rest. One review i read says Batman v Superman has a very strong opening and then it becomes a mess. Sounds like MOS. I bet the editing is an issue with better cinematography. Has Terrio improved the dialogue? Or are we moving into Nolan-Interstellar territory with constant exposition? Wouldn't surprise me if there's a ton of exposition throughout due to all these different characters and storylines being introduced to the audience.

I'm looking forward to Batfleck, at least.

BTW, Devin Faraci has called this the 'WORST MODERN SUPERHERO MOVIE'.

Damn. Keep in mind he gave MOS a positive review.

It's hard for me to take Devin too seriously. The guy is an attention ****e, plain and simple.

This is like the polar opposite to earlier today when the early reviews were positive. Now the scathing reviews are pouring in.

It's fake but I was laughing hard.

From the Rotten Tomatoes thread, thought some in here would find this quite amusing.

A shame this isn't going so well. I can't say I expected this to go great, but I had expected it to go better than this. I do hope though this means that Snyder's not going to be involved moving forward. He can make something look pretty, but his storytelling so far (and it seems BvS continues this) seems to think itself a lot more mature and thought-provoking than it really is.

My knee-jerk reaction is to say "screw critics, i bet this is awesome". But some of it feels a little bit truthful when you hear things about the action in the final act mirroring Man of Steel's final act. Or issues with character development. Snyder has a reputation now.

Isn't it a bit like revisiting a restaurant after disliking the food the first time. If you ever do return, you're not going to walk back in all happy and excited. My skepticism is back, for good reason. I shouldn't trust critics, but i shouldn't trust trailers and crew interviews either. This week, i let some of those teasers raise my expectations. I should have kept them in check.

I was hoping earlier today that Snyder had grown up and made his best movie.

I have to admit, the negative response is surprising even me. I personally became a lot more optimistic towards the film after the second trailer came out, but it appears not much will change from MOS reception-wise.

Also (huge spoiler incoming)...
Anyone not that surprised by the fact Batman kills? There's a lot of uproar over it, but I saw it coming so it doesn't exactly surprise me.

I'm happy I found out in advance. I feel I can keep a more open mind going in, and appreciate the film for what it is that way.

They're shooting Justice League in a week i think. It's on. But i bet he's taken off the sequel. If that movie doesn't do well, there won't be a sequel. Snyder probably won't return to direct anything DC unless he wins people back with Justice League. Then again, if the critic scores settle around 55 or 60 percent (is that possible?) and they make a billion...maybe WB will ignore the hate.

I wonder who the scapegoat will be? Chris Terrio? It would be funny. After all the OSCAH WINNAAH hype with him.

Shikamaru, that is potentially a huge spoiler for the people here who don't visit the BvS boards much. Might want to add a warning to your post.

I clicked on the spoiler, but i figured that was the case. It depends on how it's executed for me.

In a weird way, the cognitive dissonance between the initial positive reactions and this wave of negative reviews has calibrated my expectations in a way where I feel like I'm going in completely neutral, prepared for anything.

If the spoilers are true, then why the hell....

Has batman kept the Joker alive? LOL. He will kill nameless mooks but keep the mass murdering clown breathing? Pathetic.

So I've heard, however I wouldn't be surprised if plans change after the critical reception and if this doesn't make a certain amount of money. I could see them pushing back that filming date several months to go after a new director and swap Aquaman or Flash into JL's former spot. But then again, maybe I'm completely wrong and we'll get JL directed by Snyder. Hopefully, if we do, that goes a lot better, but I won't be getting my hopes up.

I know, right? That was my initial thought too.

That's kinda the main problem with superheroes killing. You constantly have to contrive reasons for your villains to survive.

Anything is possible i guess!

A part of me is hoping that this Justice League business gets tossed away quick, and Warner Brothers just carries on with a Batman script for Ben to direct. Considering all the Batman praise (performance wise, and visually). I know there's criticisms regarding how dark his character is, but i can see the studio doing this.

There's no reason why JL can't be a one and done, then they focus on solo films for everyone. Maybe Abrams can do a Superman movie. I don't know if i want that, but i'd rather see JJ do a solo Supes than Zack right now.

It would be a shame if they built up Darkseid and Green Lantern and never use them because the first movie bombed lol.

Man, you raise a good point. It's actually a big plot hole if that's the case. Unless
he tried to kill off Joker years ago, right after Robins death? But instead it put him in a coma or something? Now he wakes up in Suicide Squad and escapes? Maybe some of the classic rogues are dead, some in Arkham? They have to be careful.

it has to be snyder. The man just can't make a well received movie to save his life. But if it makes a billion, then he'll be back no questions asked.

Not gonna lie, that was a bit of a deal breaker for me and I have been much less excited about the film since I found out. I'm getting used to the idea though. I mean, I love Keaton's Batman, after all.

I think it's Snyder's best movie to date. Granted, I'm not a big fan of his other films, but I'd say this is the most interesting and unique thing he's ever made.
