The Dark Knight Rises You Have My Permission To Lounge - Part 6

I enjoyed Suicide Squad more than the other two, but as the months roll on, i know it's a piece of garbage. I've had time to take myself out of the cinematic experience. To think about everything in the movie, watch bits of the extended cut. And i've realized it's not a good movie, hell it's not even average. But there are scenes that i can still have fun with or laugh at/with. I won't lie about that. Harley, some Deadshot and even Captain Boomerang still entertains me. But the characterization, editing, most of the performances, the villains, Waller's plan, some of the music...yeah all of that is pretty bad.

It may end up becoming a guilty pleasure of mine like the Batman Forever. Yes, i know, Forever is more entertaining.

Hopefully the next few movies in the DCEU can reach Man of Steel's mediocre levels or finally break the curse and be a good movie.

I still haven't seen it. And I can't bring myself to. One of these days....

I watched it again lol. Big mistake. Honestly it's so blatantly stupid in parts. Sure it's "fun" but my god it really sports glaringly bad writing in places. Why would you need a bunch of criminals to fight Enchantress? Most of them don't even have powers.

It felt like one long trailer with all the flashy character bios at the beginning and the soundtrack that is basically a bunch of songs you'd hear in trailers

Still got a few intentional and unintentional laughs with my friends during the film, so I'll give it that. Leto was still abominable though. I rubbed my hands on my forehead every time he 'graced' the screen

He felt like a teenage punk trying to be the Joker if that makes sense. Like I never felt he was the Joker. Always felt like he was trying too hard to be.

I will say this about Zack though. He tried to make a movie about a darker and more conflicted Superman because Superman in general isn't cool or interesting to most people. He thought this is what would garner interest in the character, and he wasn't exactly wrong.

He certainly got people interested in the character and unintentionally made a lot of them realize that something was off with this iteration. As a lot of these people did some more research about the character, they too realized why Superman is one of the greatest characters in comic book lore.

Man of Steel helped a lot of people finally understand what makes Superman so special. But not in the way Zack wanted.

I feel that is a misguided approach. The world is filled with angsty superheroes. The world is filled with angsty protagonists in general. Superman's happy, optimistic nature would've made him stand out. Snyder made Superman common.

Thankfully Marvel realized this and made Cap an unabashed goody goody. God knows if lesser people were in charge, we would've gotten the dreaded Ultimate Cap.

My feelings exactly!

Huh, that's an interesting way of looking at it Chip. Never thought of it that way. I guess in a sense his darker take combined with the state of the world has caused people to yearn for the traditional Superman more than ever...an appetite that wasn't necessarily there in a big way with the mainstream audience prior to Man of Steel. I think in the lead-up to MoS, a lot of people definitely WERE keen on seeing the "Batman Begins" take on the Superman franchise. On paper it sounds good. After all Begins is basically a hero's journey that's partially modeled after Donner's original Superman. I think in theory, simply updating that approach for the 21st century could've worked. You can depict the world as a modern, complex and darker but still allow to Superman to be who he is and contrast with that.

Truthfully I think Snyder got lost somewhere in between trying to honor the character by treating it seriously and leaning into the religious underpinnings of the character, while also trying to put him through his filter of "edgy coolness". In the end- after two movies we just didn't get a character that you want to root for. The movies themselves never make a terribly great case for the world even wanting a Superman. We'll see how Justice League handles all of this, but it may be too little too late.

Superman's whole arc in BvS is 'do it for Lois". When you misunderstand a character to that extent, there is no crawling out of it.

I don't want JL to suck, but if it makes WB realize that Zack is more suited to work on his war film and Ayn Rand movie (lol), then it's a hit I think I might be willing to take

That's one of his problems. He felt like a Joker fanboy wannabe.

Hopefully the Jason Todd rumour was actually true. Then the "wannabe Joker" performance would actually make sense.

it makes more and more sense every day

latest

I've heard this rumour that Leto's joker is Jason todd but I'm not buying it. I find it very hard to believe they'd sell Leto to the public as the joker just to pull the rug out from everyone. Furthermore, story wise it doesn't make a lot of sense. Wasn't Harley Quinn in love with The Joker....not a Joker want a be? How could you explain most of that 'love story' that happened in that movie? Oh wait, I know. You make a sequel to it and explain away all the bad plots points from the previous movie and then act as if "it was all part of the plan". Kinda like what BvS did with Mos. When at first you don't succeed...

I rewatched Suicide Squad the other day and actually enjoyed it more the second time around, even with all of its flaws etc.

Still don't care for The Joker. That "grape soda on ice and bear skin rug" line sounded awful and was obviously done with ADR afterwards.

Most of his lines were crap or forgettable. "Hunka hunka" still makes me cringe.

I hate Joker in that movie, wish they made a better version.

Joker will take a back seat in favour of Margot's Harley. Which isn't a bad thing at all.

Well...It kind of is, my friend. This is The Joker, he should not be playing second fiddle to Harley. Not really a fan of "she is crazier than him, and more fearless!"

But if it means we see less of this "Joker" in favor of her, then I guess that's actually a good thing :hehe:

In general, or just in some movies? If you mean in general, I do not agree, because the Joker is a much, much better character IMO, with much better material to draw from in the comics. If he is taking a backseat to a character like Harley then they will have really messed up with him IMO.

The news indicating a push for Robbie and Smith beyond Suicide Squad is intriguing.

I think WB knows that Leto's Joker just didn't quite click. It'll be interesting to see where he pops up next.

That would just be the best news

They had to have realized this
