Warner Bros and DC are in the early stages of another Batman Universe spinoff movie, this one telling the origin story of the signature villain The Joker. The studio has set The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips to co-write a script with 8 Mile scribe Scott Silver. Phillips will direct the movie, and Martin Scorsese will produce it with Phillips. This will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters.

I’m told that the intention is to make an origin story that isn’t part of any other iteration. The Joker has memorably been part of two Batman movies in the form of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, and was most recently played by Jared Leto in the first Suicide Squad film. He will reprise in the Suicide Squad sequel and the Harley Quinn spinoff, but this new film will launch the character with a different actor, possibly younger.

An intriguing part is the setting. The intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy. I’m told that Phillips and Silver are writing already, but there is nothing firm on where this will fit into the DC schedule.

Phillips most recently directed War Dogs with Jonah Hill and Miles Teller. Silver’s recent script credits include The Fighter as well as Stronger, the David Gordon Green-directed Toronto-bound drama that stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Jeff Bauman, whose lower legs were blown off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon terror attack.

"Do you want to know how I got these tattoos scars?"

The recent news made me dig random Joker quotes from the two live action movies he was the big bad in.

I have a question. Despite Superman being the world's archetypal superhero and DC's first superhero, Batman seems to be at the forefront at the literally everything DC-related. Heck, even the current event Metal is Batman-centred. Is it safe to say he's their golden boy?

I credit WB for still coming up with new ways to make me face palm. That Joker origin movie rumor is a new level of stupid.

DC badly mangled Superman and failed to maximize his potential for three decades now. So, yeah.

I don't like Joker origin stories but I do find that premise interesting.

Thanks to Christopher Nolan saving the character after 8 years of suffering due to the brilliantly entertaining fiasco that is Batman & Robin, the Arkham games, and -to my dismay- what Tacit Ronin said.

Biggest surprise to me is Scorsese being involved. I didn't expect that.

But yeah, do we really need a Joker origin story film?

We didn't need the nearly 30 years old one, we need the new one even less.

The concept is interesting if they approach it as an anthology piece. Different actors portraying multiple origin stories. Plus, if it gives us less Leto Joker moving forward, that's always a good thing (Seriously, it's the first time ever that I wish the studio would just recast a part).

A Travis Bickle-esque Joker story could be really fresh. Scorsese producing doesn't mean it's going to be quality though. I'm sure they want this new actor in the new batman movies, unless they keep the character seperate from the Reeves films. Either way, they need to get this casting right.

I do wonder if we're going to get a proper Bat-Fleck v Leto Joker showdown before Ben bails on the role.

There is no guarantee he'll be popping up in Suicide Squad 2 or Gotham City Sirens (outside of possible cameos).

I think he's done after JL. Apparently Reeves' Batman is another standalone movie. Probably a backdoor pilot for a new and improved shared universe.

WB continues to go after the low hanging fruit with their ideas. Milking their proven IP until it runs dry. I want time away from Joker, to tell you the truth. He's obviously a great character, but there are plenty of other villains that haven't yet had their day in the sun. Joker is overused.

I suspect Affleck will say he is playing Batman in The Batman in the next few days :funny:

He'll say whatever he needs to to keep the press and the fanboys off his back :hehe: He's been playing the Hollywood game for decades, he knows how it is.

If Affleck bails on the Batman, I wonder how many previous diehard defenders would suddenly shrug their shoulders and profess: it was totally part of the plan, no biggie. Lol at you making a mountain out of a molehill. Disney shill.

A lot, probably.

I'd like to see him do play the role.

I stopped caring once all the drama with the DCEU in general came to light; Flash directors constantly dropping out, Affleck slowly moving apart from the solo Bat film, Justice League being rushed...
