The Dark Knight Rises You Have My Permission To Lounge - Part 9

One of the posters over there said this about the brightness.
. what I think we’re seeing the HDR applied to the HD image, downcoverted to SDR. This isn’t the first film I’ve seen this happen to on iTunes.

I don't see why that would make the movies look way brighter, though.

Why? Did they tamper with them?
Because outside BB, I doubt there are proper HD masters in existence for TDK and TDKR. Looks like a rough convert from HDR material. Image is overly bright with blown-out highlights. But BB comparison is an improvement overall. Look at the door behind the young Rachel. Contrast is more balance, colors are richer. Also, these screens are mostly intended to show color difference and don't capture the actual fine detail. Add there horrible compression.

As I said,
They basically just look brighter, as it's not going to be making the most of what 4k HDR can with the dynamic range. But this definitely confirms that they did new transfers.

People on the forums are saying the colors look a lot richer for BB and TDK.

These are not actual 4K streams, so it's not going to be making the most of the increased dynamic range. Scenes like the interrogation and Joker's mob meeting have harsh, fluorescent lighting so they're meant to be brighter, but we're not getting the full spectrum of light/dark in these images as they aren't 4K. It's not like they just brightened up the whole thing and called it a day.

This basically just highlights how squashed the old 35mm footage in TDK was.

When we have the actual 4k images, then we can do a true 1:1 comparison.

Thanks for posting James B.

If those screencaps are indicative of the quality, I'll stick with the originals.

Are you saying that these screen caps in particular aren't 4K? Because yeah, of course some screencaps from iTunes aren't going to capture the finer details.

No, they're not. It's an HD stream on iTunes.

All this does is confirm that new transfers were done. Nobody has yet laid eyes on what the results of the new transfers have yielded in all their 4k HDR glory.

I would advise everyone to not prematurely judge it based on these poor screencaps. I work in video and know a thing or two about this stuff.

Old masters for all three sucked ass. Choice is yours, of course. But it's obvious to me colors and contrast are improved. And in case of TDK - massively. Black crush is dealt with. It's clearly visible even on these poor-quality screen grabs.

I'll get them anyways, but I'll wait until the bluray.com review.

It's a little jarring to see the two versions side by side, but if you look at Joker's mouth in both versions there's less "pixel smudging" in the new brighter version even in this iTunes screencap.

HDR is so crucial here. iTunes HD is clearly not suited to handle the extreme blacks and whites, and obviously a super bright scene like the interrogation is going to look like ass this way.

Won't be the case in a 4K HDR situation, I can guarantee you.

You can already tell the new version is sharper, though. More detail and less what looks like artificial sharpening run amok.

I read only BB will get a BD with a new master. TDK and TDKR will have old BDs. So the only chance to see the new master is to have UHD players and panels.

Now what I want to know is will they keep the different aspect ratios?

Oh yeah, totally. I'm really curious to see what it looks like in true 4K.

Sounds like it, unfortunately. I still wish they'd just include an option to keep it consistent. Oh well, I may just have to make my own versions some day.

Never had a problem with shifting AR. I'm glad they're keeping it. IMAX footage deserves it.

I don't really mind the shifting AR in the Nolan films. The only movie where it actively bothered me was Transformers: The Last Knight because it had three aspect ratios it kept switching between.

Interstellar was like that as well.

Re: the brightness thing...it's funny, we've all been watching the crappy transfer of TDK for so long that it's what our eyes are used to at this point.

But when I really think back to my theater viewing experience of TDK, I remember that interrogation scene being bright AF. Look how dull and smudgy it looks in the old version.

IF they somehow screwed up this transfer I'll be very disappointed because I've been waiting years, but as of now I still feel confident this will be a real treat in 4K.

Yeah we've been used to a particular version for almost nine years now. I'm confident the new versions will be preferable overall.

I'm pretty sure TDK and TDKR won't be this bright. Even colors aren't accurate here. Check out Joker's hair - it's not even green. I think the final thing will look close to the trailer colors.

Something like this:

Or this:

It definitely looked different from the first trailer.

I wouldn't trust iTunes. Their transfer for BvS looks nothing like the disc.
