Well that will never happen in the country we live in. So I'm completely fine with MBJ playing the Human Torch. Nobody complains that he's not an Android so I wont complain that MY personal favorite actor is in a comic book movie in a starring role

Yeah it's completely ridiculous to think that War Machine, Falcon, Bishop, Luke Cage, or Blade would ever show up in a major film/television production.

Luke Cage is getting his own Netflix show. Black Panther will most likely have his solo debut in the MCU by 2017 and be part of Avengers 3. All of that in the country you live in!

Yes Blade didn't have Marvel logo before his movie. He was an outcast until his film made money. None of those others are main members in the films until 2010!

Power Man im excited for but it isnt even a film.

Dont compare them to Starks or Cap in the films because its not a comparison

Luke Cage is showing up at approximately the same time as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and probably Dr. Strange. In other words, right around the time the current Avengers will be finished with their contracts a bunch of characters that were in a book called New Avengers will have been introduced. Do you really think Luke Cage has no chance of being in a film?

OMG a Netflix show! We've made it!

A Netflix show that will be seen by millions and probably launch him to Avengers 3. The horror!

And then you ignored the Panther movie.

The superhero genre is in dire need of branching away from white dudes, but you can't deny that heroes like Panther and Cage aren't getting their due soon. Plus, The Rock is close to being announced for a starring DC role. It's getting better.

Well that will never happen in the country we live in.

Right, because no movie has ever had a black man in the lead role, right? People will vote for a black President, but watch a superhero movie with a black lead? Oh, that's out of the question! :whatever:

Good for you, but if I'm being asked to see a Fantastic Four movie then I want it to be about the Fantastic Four, and not a film which serves as the vehicle for whoever your favorite actor at the moment happens to be.

Yes Blade didn't have Marvel logo before his movie.

 THE LOGO DIDN'T EXIST AT THE TIME. Good God, man.

Yeah it's completely ridiculous to think that War Machine, Falcon, Bishop, Luke Cage, or Blade would ever show up in a major film/television production.

Yeah, love how he claims that a black superhero would never get his own movie, but then ignores Blade, Blade II, Blade: Trinity, Steel, Catwoman, and Spawn. Four of them sucked, but they damn well happened, and will happen again.

Considering that this is a country where a black man holds the most powerful office in the country, this thread has devolved into an utterly stupid argument IMO. What is the issue here? No positive black role models in Marvel Studios' comic book films? It seems to me Marvel's done a great job of establishing black actors in iconic roles in their CBMs: Nick Fury (total badass and director of SHIELD), Jim Rhodes/War Machine, Heimdall (which they got a lot of flack for BTW), and Sam Wilson/Falcon who was a GREAT character and a standout to me in Cap 2.

Marvel has made films based on the properties they thought could have the most success. They don't have the rights to their two biggest properties X-Men and Spider-Man. They don't even have Fantastic Four. So they worked on making the Avengers a reality. Iron Man, Thor and Captain America are the Big Three and have carried titles for decades as well as the Hulk. Luke Cage and Black Panther have not. However as mentioned Luke Cage is getting his own series and Feige has been on the record as saying that a Black Panther film is in the works. That to me is their ace in the hole because I can't think of a more iconic original black superhero who is no sidekick and is not an alternate version of another character that was originally played by a white guy.

The Human Torch is not only a sidekick - he couldn't carry a title in the sixties and he's not even black in the comics. So MBJ as great as an actor as he is will be an alternate version. Not to mention it is uninspired, stereotypical casting. Sure cast the black guy as the hotheaded, irresponsible, immature, only want to have a good time, philanderer. You want to impress me with your bold stroke then make Reed Richards the smartest man in the world a black man. Why is Sue not black in this film? No instead you introduce a whole new family dynamic which never existed in the comics and to me smacks of nothing more than tokenism.

Michael B Jordan could've played Reed, and Miles Teller could've been Johnny, and it might've been more acceptable and even believable.

Yep. And don't forget that the absence of the Marvel logo before Blade was because Marvel was trying to distance itself from its black superhero...

...nevermind that that logo didn't even exist at the time, and didn't appear with the first X-Men movie, which came out two years later. But hey, why have your facts straight when you can just imply racism instead? Although X-Men did feature Storm, so maybe Marvel was trying to distance themselves from another black superhero by not putting in the logo they hadn't invented yet?

That to me is their ace in the hole because I can't think of a more iconic original black superhero who is no sidekick and is not an alternate version of another character that was originally played by a white guy.

Agreed. Black Panther is the gold standard that they need to hit. Particularly given that he's a Stan Lee creation and how unique his origins are.

Michael B Jordan could've played Reed, and Miles Teller could've been Johnny, and it might've been more acceptable and even believable.

but you wouldn't have liked that any more than the current set-up. so why bring it up?

then none of this should bother you.

Not to mention it is uninspired, stereotypical casting.

who would you have cast as Johnny Storm? and it better not come across as uninspired or stereotypical.

Sure cast the black guy as the hotheaded, irresponsible, immature, only want to have a good time, philanderer.

or the young passionately happy-go-lucky gearhead ladies-man.

You want to impress me with your bold stroke then make Reed Richards the smartest man in the world a black man.

they could do that and have Michael B Jordan play Johnny.

Why is Sue not black in this film?

because her race doesn't matter.

No instead you introduce a whole new family dynamic which never existed in the comics and to me smacks of nothing more than tokenism.

no more than your suggestion of Michael B Jordan as Reed. i think it's quite clever to make it an unconventional family dynamic. their brother-sister bond is just as (if not more) important.

I seriously can not wait to see Brother Jordan kick ass next year
And especially on Halloween when all the young black children fill up the party store for their brand new Torch costumes!

Change has come! Flame On!

my nephew is pretty excited about it. he went from being a Hulk fan, to an Iron Man fan, to a Torch fan; in what seemed like a few months. i'm trying to steer him towards the Falcon.

Hopefully "all the young black children" will be happy with Falcon and Iron Patriot Halloween costumes. Marvel controls tie-in merchandise for all of their licensed properties, and they haven't allowed movie costumes for the properties FOX presently control since the Disney buy-out.

why'd you put that in quotation marks?

Remember Milestone Comics? I remember a funny story about that. A young black kid walks into a comic store and the store owner points him to the Milestone Comics, Icon, Static, and all the rest. The black kid responds "@#$% that! Where's my Spider-Man?!?" Being the same skin color as you doesn't make a character automatically more appealing, as was the case with the Milestone characters for that kid.

or he got the same subliminal message that i got, growing up; something isn't good if only minorities like it. reading Milestone is like me only posting in the Positive Thread. and you can't think of a reason why Spider-man might be instantly appealing to a minority? he is covered head to toe. he could be any color beneath the mask. it was Stan Lee who mentioned that being part of his appeal, btw. the true test would be having those Milestone characters suddenly be Marvel characters; interacting with Spider-man and Captain America/being Avengers. whenever i meet another black comic book reader, i ask them who their favorite character is. a lot of them answer with Luke Cage, Black Panther, or (lately) Blue Marvel. some of them say Spider-man too. but the could be talking about the Ultimate version, for all i know. and i'm only referencing the few that i've met.

I don't even know what all this nonsense you just wrote is all about. The point of my post is that there are positive black role models already and I am in favor of it. Way to turn it into something else. It seems to me that you're just lashing out at everybody who doesn't share your viewpoint towards this film in particular. Fox has done nothing clever here in my opinion. I disagree with your statements but I'm not going to be baited into a petty race argument. There's been enough of that.

I don't get you man. If this thing really happens you're getting the film you want so you should be happy and not care what other people think. The film will stand on its own merits for better or worse. Rock on with your Foxtastic Four.

In the meantime, we're not going to stop voicing our opinions on this so your crusade to silence others' dislike of this production is a pointless one. Conversely, no one is stopping you from speaking your mind but there's a vitriol that comes across to me that I don't feel is necessary.

Honestly the moment you trashed Dr. Doom as a character your particular opinion means very little to me with regards to these characters as you are someone who obviously has little regard for the source material so of course you don't care about the changes.

Being the same skin color as you doesn't make a character automatically more appealing, as was the case with the Milestone characters for that kid. And plenty of black Fantastic Four fans would rather see the Fantastic Four they know and love rather than a cheap knockoff in a pathetic attempt to pander. Nevermind that, if you weren't already interested in seeing a Fantastic Four movie, then I doubt a black Human Torch will suddenly make that franchise more appealing to you, so it probably won't bring any box office benefit. It will, however, piss off a segment of the fan population who want to see their beloved characters on screen, not bastardized versions of them.

Would it be nice if there were more superhero movies with minority characters? Sure, but how about promoting characters who're already minorities instead of pissing off a segment of the fans right from the bat by messing with long standing and popular characters? War Machine, Falcon, Black Panther, Bishop, Prowler, Luke Cage, Blade, Rage, Night Thrasher, Cardiac, Blue Marvel, etc. How about promoting those characters? That's something which every fan would be glad to see.
Iktr Preach!!

Curious what people think of Simon Kinberg's recent interview with CraveOnline? I feel like it answered a fair number of complaints about this movie.

For those who don't know:

http://screenrant.com/simon-kinberg-x-men-days-future-past-fantastic-four-reboot/

"It’s still in the direction of [Sam Raimi's] ‘Spider-Man.’ It’s not like ‘Dark Knight.’ And even ‘Chronicle’ has a lot of fun in it. We’re treating this as the origin of the Fantastic Four so in future movies you’d have them on sort of splashier adventures to some extent but in this one we tried to ground the science as much as possible and make it feel like it could take place in our world before it cantilevers into other worlds."
There's also this, from Den of Geek:

"We’re definitely telling a younger story that the original films did. It depends on what books you look at. There are some, like the Ultimate books, that tell this story. So it is an origin story of the Fantastic Four, and it does follow them before they really know what a superhero is....They’re older than high school, but they’re not quite grown into the world. If anything, this is a coming of age story."...Pressed on whether we’ll see the iconic sequence in which the Four gain their powers after being bombarded with cosmic rays during a space flight, Kinberg was more reticent about the details:"There is archetypal imagery of how they get their powers, for sure, and it does involve some sort of scientific travel." The movie begins shooting in Louisiana in about two weeks.

This sounds a little better than what they were talking about before IMO.
