Days of Future Past never had this doubt factor that people keep claiming. First Class, yes. Largely due to Fox's reputation and the previous two awful X-Films. But Days of Future Past was always heavily looked forward too. A ton of people thought it would come close to a billion dollar gross worldwide, so DOFP actually ended up disappointing a bit.

Being a superhero movie means everything! When was the last major superhero movie that made less than 300 mill? And the previous Fantastic Four movies left a bad taste in peoples mouth primarily for comic book fans, and even than I've met some who've liked it. And be realistic the movies weren't necessarily a bad representation of the FF. Weak script and for some dull performances are to blame honestly.

And go back and look at the hate for Transformers 4, now go back and look at how much the movie made. Over a billion. That argument becomes less and less valid.

Hell, go look at the doubt factor for Days of Future Past; which ended up being one of the best comic book movies ever.

A trailer or two will get people excited, or at least curious. The only reason this movie is getting hate in the first place are because of the deviations which result in people blatantly ignoring the HUGE talent from both cast AND crew. I'll reiterate, this movie will go under the radar and become buried in hate that more than likely it's going to become a huge hit. It's been happening often.
Just like Sign City 2... oh wait.

I like the Dr. Doom look. Is it the design I would prefer? No. Is it the one I would've went with? No. But it has a creepy, sorta malformed grotty look that I love. In a "coming-of age story", it makes sense for him not to have the most traditional costume (Lame excuse?) and the origin of his suit/Armor being magically forged will probably be saved for a sequel if he's to return.

And did any one else think of Hobgoblin?

This seems to be demonstrating my previous point I made before:

There seems to have almost been a constant moving of the goalposts with the attitude to this movie. It's like: Let's wait until after DOFP. Let's wait until SDCC. Let's wait until the first set pics. Let's wait until the first trailer. Let's wait until the reviews. Let's wait until the end credits scene. Let's wait until your second viewing. Let's wait until the BR/DVD. Let's wait until the sequel. Let's wait until the reboot. :whatever:

There will likely be no sequel since this movie will probably trank tank.

This thing may have a Sin City 2 budget, in which case 200 m would make it profitable. It will be interesting to see what Fox puts out for this and just how invested they are.

You don't need a crystal ball, just a rudimentary understanding of box office trends. And scheduling a low budget reboot of a weak brand at the same time against big budget tentpoles of two strong brands is a recipe for box office disaster. And those cult classics don't have a requirement that they be successfully or else their rights revert.

You making an assumption at best because you never know how audiences are going to swing. People who go to school to forecast these numbers are often wrong. The human element in any equation can foul everything up. I remember reading how the Prince of Persia was forcasted to be this big hit for disney. That never happened and I thought it was a good movie.

Hm, I was speaking primarily on comic-book-movie.com. Though those guys hate everything haha.

That means nothing. Mortal Instruments had a sequel release date before the first one was released. Still waiting on that. So have many other films. Sequel release date means jack and squat if the 1st one bombs.

Speaking of.. Prince of Persia-another film that cast outside of race to make the film more marketable and it backfired.

just saying.

Yeah, it happens all the time.

What's even sadder, is when a movie announces a sequel in it's end credits that never gets made.

I was pretty disgusted at how that whole production turned out. Especially with all of the characters being cast outside their race.

When it comes to Human Torch, I don't really care. I like MBJ and im sure he'll play the part fine. Matter of fact he's probably the cast member I like the most. Its everyone else and the overall concept of how yong they are that throws me for a loop.

Green Lantern was saving Sinestro for the sequel wasn't it? I see that's coming along nicely.

Fox might announce a sequel to FFINO, but there's no reason to make one, especially when they're so half hearted about this one and are only doing it to keep the rights. If they retain them, they can rest comfortably and shelve the FF for another 7 years before pulling another turd out of their ass.

But does it need any of that? Fantastic Four itself is a popular property due to the last two films (Financially they did well) and comic fans in general. Not to mention the ever lasting growth in anticipation for the super hero genre; it's the biggest it's ever been.

Fantastic Four, despite being the first of the modern Marvel comics, is one of Marvel's least popular franchises.

General audiences really don't care about it, and its never really been successful with them.

I remember Fox said they were going to make a Dragonball: Evolution sequel too. :funny:

Prince of Persia was a videogame movie (which has a long history of underperforming) and a first time adaptation. Jurassic Park and Pixar films are established franchises and brands, hence their potential grosses can be quantified with a reasonable certainty (particularly Pixar films, which have performed like clockwork).

This is hilariously wrong. I followed that movie so closely. In the forums every day. None of this was/is the case.

I'm absolutely right. DoFP was the most looked forward to comic book movie this summer.

You're so unbelievably wrong that I'm not sure whether you are lying or actually believe what you are saying.

Few people expected for it to gross more than 1 billion. Most people voted for $700 million in the box-office thread of Days of Future Past. So worldwide, the expectations were met, not just in domestic where people expected it to outgross X3.

Keep in mind that even if this is good and we're all proven wrong about it. Dredd was a flop because the original Sylvester Stallone film was so terrible so Fox has a serious uphill battle to turn a profit with this which makes their lack of marketing concerning. Fox should be fighting tooth and nail to promote this and instead it seems like a film that the studio doesn't want to make, It's a film that they HAVE to make.

And Marvel didn't bite when Fox offered the rights back so this is a film that neither studio wanted to make for a property that most people see as dated and nobody really cares about anymore. If Josh Trank and Simon Kinberg actually put heart and soul into this and don't just phone it in, then MAYBE it'll make a decent profit. It would just help if they did more promo.

Yeah, JP keeps pushing the story that DOFP was the little engine that could, with only a select group of true believers - he leading the charge - supporting the film. It's complete BS.

IME on these boards DoFP was being viewed positively among the regulars on it's board prior to the release. Obviously there were things people were worried about or had differences of opinion over, but overall I think we all knew Fox had invested heavily in it and that the statements we had gotten from folks like Singer and Kinberg acknowledged a lot of the problems people had with X3. The rest of the internet is another story...I definitely saw more skepticism from the GA angle (but clearly plenty of them still came around once the movie was released, so what this means for FF I'm not sure. Pissing off the fan base isn't going to do it any favors, but ultimately I think basic quality will make or break this one: if it gets bad reviews, it's toast).
