If Johnny Storm is not defined by being white, why the hell has he been drawn as a white male for the past 50 years?

I'm not so sure about that. Ben and Johnny can easily still have the same brotherly dynamic, and I can imagine a group of characters where the most intelligent and mature one is the "team dad" even if in reality he's only a couple of years older.

I can't wait to see Miles Teller put his hand on Michael Jordan's shoulder and call him "son". In no way will that be awkward!

I'm assuming you meant "does."

I did!

I have to ask: Why? How does it diminish the character if he looks different in an adaptation? So the character originally comes from a visual medium where he looked a certain way. What harm does altering his appearance in the adaptation cause? It's not like we're changing some kind of iconic symbolism here. We're not taking away Batman's cape and cowl or Indian Jones' hat. We're taking a white character who is in no way defined by his whiteness and casting a black actor in a film. What's the harm?

Why do Storm and Rogue have white hair?
Why are Jean and Natasha red heads?
Why are Thor and Cap blonde?
Why are Beast and Mystique blue?
Why are Gamora and Drax green?
Why do Tony and Dum-Dum have facial hair?

Because fans prefer the on-screen adaptations resemble the source material. The harm comes from our not buying what they are selling us.

And it would be a bad thing how?

Well, first instinct, it feels like it might come off as something of a narrative tangent. That kind of dynamic works best is it's front and center in the story. This middle aged Johnny Storm character, would, I think, have to be the main character of the film, or close to it. It could very easily throw off the team dynamic if they go for a true ensemble piece. The dynamic in the comics works better for a balanced ensemble cast where no one out shines or draws attention away from anyone else.

But in theory, sure it could work. Not my first instinct, but I'm sure someone somewhere could pull it off.

Still not comparable to making him black, though.

Not all changes are equal.

Habit. Tradition. That's how the first guy did it and no one thought to change it.

If Johnny Storm is defined by being white, what fundamental aspect of who he is as a person would have to change if you change his race?

I doubt that will happen. But it also doesn't happen that much in the comics either. Reed never calls Johnny "son."

That didn't answer my question. What harm does it do to the characters?

Also, I wouldn't be bothered that much if they changed those things.

Also, Drax was grey in the movie.

Why would it matter to you if the team dynamic is off, as long as it's in the name of art, and you consider it a good movie? That's all that matters, right?

...than Miles Teller?

Miles Teller looks 17 years old.

EDIT: Oh. Look at this. They were both in this dumb movie:

Huh. And wasn't Jordan cast before any of them? Oh, he was.

Huh. Imagine that.

And now they're in this movie together:

Tradition, yes because that's how the chracater was originally conceived and it has remained that way for 50 years. So it's just sake for the sake of change then? It was very unnecessary imo.

I dunno yet, with Kinberg writing the script, anything could change. :oldrazz:

Good question.

Fox has pulled the Doom pic, please do not post the pic anymore until an official release.

Thanks

Hardly surprising. It's not like they want anything to leak about this production and that definitely gave more negative publicity.

So it was legit?:funny: After all the bad PR, this wasn't at all surprising.:halo:

Agreed. This isn't a novel it's based off of a comic book so visual is paramount.

Sure they have changed characters before but for me there's a fine line. Not just Black Johnny Storm I hate the whole cast...

And director.

The Screenwriter doesn't seem to have much of a clue either.

I'm hoping that was on purpose. haha

Yep. They had to go and cast the *****iest looking actor they could find in Miles Teller. Apologists can't say that they'll fix him in post production because no amount of CG is going to change his looks unless he were just doing mo cap, but he specifically didn't want to play Ben Grimm, so we have to endure his duck mug. Maybe it will be even more exaggerated since he's meant to be elastic.

I doubt that will happen. But it also doesn't happen that much in the comics either. Reed never calls Johnny "son."

Reed has always been depicted as a father figure/mentor, though a quick browsing of my comics came up with Reed addressing Johnny as "lad", " boy" and " kid" - Spidey got a "son". Obviously, this relationship will cease to exist in the Trank version.

That didn't answer my question. What harm does it do to the characters?

I was being silly to make a point. Why keep anything from the source material? Why not cast an obese Asian woman to portray Sue, give Reed the power to split into dozens of smaller Reeds, replace Johnny with a robot and have Ben be an adorable drooling dog who teaches the team about the power of love? Because fans that love the FF want to see a film about the FF.

Also, Drax was grey in the movie.

Can we agree on greenish-grey? I read an story about the make-up process Bautista underwent and green was definitely involved.

Has anybody brought up Michael B Jordan and him posting the F4 logo on his instagram yet? Because I think it might be the official logo for the movie...

Honestly, the Doom pic wasn't as upsetting as it was confusing. I don't know the context of the scene or what kind of lighting, filtering or special effects will be added in that scene. I don't know if that will be the same version of the suit used for the entire film. Costuming, props and makeup applications are created to look a certain way in the final film. So, I'll reserve judgment till then... or at least a promotional image or trailer!
