I think that whether you love or hate the film, that essay should really be used to frame your perspective. The breakdown was just so well articulated. I won't be able to look at the film through any other lens at this point.

I feel the exact same way. I saw a quote on twitter that said "[BvS] has chosen the most cynical way possible to interpret them, at a time in our history when we need that...least".

When I first walked out of the theater, if I'm completely honest this somewhat echoed my feelings. It wasn't how I wanted these characters to be presented. However, after reading this article (and seeing the movie again), when you couple the dark places that these characters are in throughout the majority of this movie with the catharsis that comes from the revenge tragedy, I am of the mindset that this is exactly what we need.

That scene was so Superman, loved it. Here he is on to Bruce Wayne, knows he's Batman and doesn't trust him at all. Sticking to his ideals of bringing this vigilante who is trampling on civil liberties to justice. But then, he notices this girl in danger on the television. No time is wasted at all as he ditches this personal vendetta of his to rescue someone in need, classic Superman.

Aye. Loved that.

This film is audacious as hell. It is like nothing I have even seen before. It manages to meld a taut psychological drama that has a fairly straightforward narrative with a sense of the mythic, and some very intriguing artistic vision scenes that reveal that meta-human threats are coming. I think it succeeded in bringing all these elements together. It is epic and haunting.

The extended cut will make it better, of course. I won't lie that there are some editing issues created by trying to squeeze the film into 2.5 hours. But hardly enough to ruin the film. Not for me anyway.

And it is a comic book movie before and after everything else to be said. To me, it is a great comic book brought to life.

I saw how sad Ben Affleck looked when he and Henry were giving their reactions to the critics panning it on Yahoo. Ben, be proud. There has never been a film in the CBM genre that has attempted anything so daring. And for many, many fans I believe this film succeeds.

Ben Affleck looks sad because his personal life is falling apart, he made supreme bank on this film. I doubt he's too worried about that.

Love this thread! :)
I need all those positivity because it's hard and exhausting to be a Superman fan and to like this movie.

This^. I must admit, I was starting to turn a little wary pre-release when RT-gate came out. But then I read a bad review where it said that one of the negatives of them film was because it's almost like seeing gods and monsters battle it out in the smoke. THAT was when I thought, "You know what? I TOTALLY dig that!" That's what DC has been for me. The modern personification of mythic Greek god figures. I know after the Nolan era, everyone wants thinsg to be more realistic and grounded. But bringing the myth of godlike stature from the DC heroes on screen is exactly what Snyder did, and I love it! From batman swinging everywhere, to Wonder Woman blocking with her bracelets and slicing and dicing with her sword, to the heat vision standoff between Superman and Doomsday, it's like comic book 2-page spread panel come to life!

I think the skeptics are just looking too deep into it with a bit of confirmation bias. Ben has this exact same look during SDCC around the time of his divorce.

Superman came out of this movie looking like a hero.

In the news yesterday the rescue teams, the news, the internet were bashing the c*** out of this guy that had to be rescued off a mountain because he was too tired to walk down it. Something a little kid could do. Today it was revealed he has PTSD and had an attack and now all the apologies come out.

If this isn't a realistic depiction of the world we live in in BvS I don't know what is. Because no matter how much Superman tries to do good the media bash him. He has a crisis of faith, seeks solace in a memory from Pa Kent and still comes back to try and do the right thing again.

His heroic death solidified his character arc of being the Superman that will do anything to save everyone.

7 out of 8 people that i know that have seen this film liked it. some really liked it.

Very good article, but i don't understand this:
That moment of confusion forces Batman to instantly relive his mother’s death, to feel that helplessness again for the ten thousandth or millionth time, and then the confusion gives way to realization and understanding that Superman is indeed just a man with a life and a mother he is trying to protect, and Batman’s world comes crashing down. He now knows that yes, he was the villain, he was another “good person” who didn’t stay that way. He was standing astride a man who represented hope and goodness, blaming that man for all of humanity’s failings and cynicism and hopelessness.
Could anybody explain that line to me? Thx.

Humanity blames their own failings to Superman. As explained in the article earlier, there are instances where Superman does the right thing a the moment, but unforeseen circumstances my result in less desired consequences elsewhere. Good example is the story about the flood that Pa Kent told. In saving his own farm and family, he redirected the flood to another farm down the stream. That farm blames Pa Kent for their own misfortunes. If you take that into the real world, humanity blames certain misfortunes on Superman for intervening pretty much. And Batman, after 20 years of cynicism constantly bashing him, has fallen into that trap.

To put it simply, humanity is playing the blame game. As stated in MoS, Jor-El wanted Superman to be the beacon of hope to guide humanity towards the sun. You can pretty much view humanity as children, not wanting to take responsibility for their own faults. You know, kind of like in the real world. And now this god figure appears who is different from them, and while he does good, those deeds might result in failings in other areas. But these failings are usually caused by human error in their reaction to Superman. But since Superman is the catalyst for these changes, they blame all the bad changes to him as well.

Going to see this movie again tomorrow. Only sad part is that I can't find a regular IMAX showing and may have to go 2D. After seeing it in IMAX the first time I'm a little wary of the downgrade.

I just never noticed Bruce was blaming Superman "for all of humanity’s failings and cynicism and hopelessness". He saw him as a threat, as someone so powerful he can destroy the entire planet at whim.

Sure, he blames Superman for destruction of Metropolis, but "all of humanity’s failings and cynicism and hopelessness" seems too much hyperbolic.

I think that bit is more of a macrocosm for Bruce's own feelings. Bruce certainly blames Superman for thing he feels are his own failings (the destruction of Wayne Tower), his own cynicism (the idea that even the best of us fall from grace), and his own hopelessness (feeling that nothing he's accomplished really means anything). Bruce sorta took those feelings and projected them outward toward humanity as a whole, to justify his killing of a god.

Just came from my fifth viewing.

Before 5th viewing:

The Dark Knight
Watchmen Director's Cut
The Dark Knight Rises
Batman Begins
Man of Steel
Hulk (2003)
X2
Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice
Captain America The Winter Soldier
The Amazing Spider-Man

After 5th viewing:

The Dark Knight
Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice
Watchmen Director's Cut
The Dark Knight Rises
Batman Begins
Man of Steel
Hulk (2003)
X2
Captain America The Winter Soldier
The Amazing Spider-Man

Snyder's WATCHMEN was a deconstruction of the genre in cinema, way ahead of its time. BATMAN v SUPERMAN is the reconstruction of heroism. It is his best and most emotional film with a piercing commentary on the state of the world...among other things.

Disagreements are fine and welcome but I'm never moving off this opinion. Ever.

Glad to hear you liked it even more!

And I'm guessing you will be getting the ultimate edition on Blu-ray also? Lol.

Just organised my Sat viewing :woot:

Man Saturday's gonna be awesome, I have BvS in the morning, then when I get back I have 3 episodes of Gotham to watch along with the most recent episode of the Flash, Arrow and a Legends of Tomorow. Also will have DC Fancast and DC Fancast Unmasked to watch. To cap it all off the wife off to visit her Mum for the weekend.

It's gonna be an awesome Saturday :woot:

On BvS being a revenge tragedy, that essay had it completely right. Terrio explicitly said he based his script on the structure of revenge tragedies in his interview with WSJ.

This has been the most rigorous intellectual exercise I’ve had in my writing life. For “Batman v Superman,” I wanted to really dig into everything from ideas about American power to the structure of revenge tragedies to the huge canon of DC Comics to Amazon mythology.

http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2016/03/11/inside-chris-terrios-vision-for-batman-superman-and-justice-league/

Makes it even clearer to me that I didn't watch this film within the proper context the first time. Definitely plan on seeing it again this weekend.

Saw it the first time last Friday with my son...regular showing. Going to see it again with him tonight in IMAX.

Wow, that's DC overdose right there. Enjoy!

Just put on the Dark Knight Returns Deluxe Edition to watch, I forgot the epic Man of Steel trailer (#3) was on this disc. By far still the greatest trailer I've ever seen for a film.
