RoboCop Reboot - Part 5

Quick compilation of the review attitudes so far (from across 15 or so reviews), in case you don't feel like reading through all of them to see what people think. No spoilers.

Some good thoughts:
Surprise, surprise – the RoboCop reboot is a lot better than reboots have a right to be.
...as much as I would love to say "nothing beats the original", I have admit that it isn't that far away from being comparable to the original.
it remains fairly satisfying
It definitely surpassed my expectations.
The answer is, IT IS A VERY GOOD REMAKE.
It won’t be easy for die-hard fans of the original to warm up to this remake, but Padilha’s RoboCop is a surprisingly solid outing.
But overall, the good far outweight the bad.
a surprisingly pleasing remake.
the end result was surprisingly decent.

Some bad thoughts:

doesn't reach its true dramatic and thematic potential.
Kinnaman and Abbie Cornish have next to no chemistry
The biggest weakness in this ROBOCOP reboot is Joshua Zetumer's captivating but bloated screenplay.
Just so we’re clear, it doesn’t trump Paul Verhoeven’s beloved original.
hardly a masterpiece
A minor disappointment is the absence of the cool/high-impact lines that made Weller’s original so memorable;
Unfortunately, Joshua Zetumer's screenplay feels mostly bloated.
I never thought I would say this... but Sam Jackson was the least enjoyable part of the movie for me

These are all taken out of context, but all of the reviews so far seem to agree on "Not without problems, but surprisingly decent and exceeding expectations."

This review really highlights a lot of the positive feelings toward the movie.

I'm not sure, I think the voice is not digitally altered to what it's like the first trailer. It is more like the international trailer, not robotic, but definitely less emotional.

That's a shame. I really liked the voice in the first trailer. I loved how in the originals, his voice would change from robotic to natural depending on what side of him was dominant at the time. I thought they might do something similar with this one.

thanks for ur review spidey.
cool to see many reviews coming out of asia being mostly positive.
seems like many people were expecting a sub-par movie but were surprised to see it being actually good.

Hey Spideyzero, are you a fan of the original film? Man I hope the shaky cam isn't that overdone.

I wouldn't call myself a fan of the film. I watched it as a child and loved it (hey, cool robot, who wouldn't?), and last year I finally watched it as an adult and really enjoyed it, but it's not "OMG...AWESOME CLASSIC!!!" to me. That's why I'm quite open to the reboot.

Thanks for the review Spidey. I am hopefully seeing this on Friday for myself and I am really looking forward to it now.

The original is a classic to me but I have no problem with this re-boot.

My wife and 90% of the people in the theater didn't expect Murphy to be just
a hand, a face, a pair of lungs and a damaged brain.
That scene made me think an R rating really isn't necessary. I didn't miss the violence from the original at all. Again, this movie is a different animal than the original so not being R rated doesn't matter.

The voice didn't seem altered to me except in scenes where
his emotions were blocked out
but I can't be 100% sure.

Good to hear about his voice. I wanted at least some alteration, though I figured it only happens when his visor is down. I image he has a regular sounding voice with his visor up eh.

Here's a question: how many of you are going to be seeing the original '87 Robocop before seeing the reboot?

I shall not. I'd compare them even more if I did. I want to give this new one the best chance possible, without having the original so fresh in my mind. Last time I saw it was a year or two ago.

I'm in the opposite camp. There's no better time to load up the new remastered blu ray! I'm watching it next weekend and I can't wait.

If you don't want to come off of the 87 film into the new, then have a trilogy marathon of the originals. Then you will be reminded of just how bad of a situation Robocop was in! The taste of Robocop 3 will be fresh in your mouth when you go into the new one haha.

I don't need to do a marathon to remember how much 2 and 3 sucked.

So true. But it's an option if you want to drown out some of the awesomeness of the original, before seeing the new film. :srg:

Now, I can't be 100% sure but visor down, altered voice...visor up, I didn't notice any alteration except in the scenes I mentioned in my previous post.

Honestly, it doesn't matter if you watched the original before seeing this one. They are two very different animals and you CAN like both equally.

"Hardly a masterpiece" seems like a bizarre criticism lol.

Oh I meant to ask about the music, this goes to Spideyzero too if you wanna chime in. How well does the music play with the film? Is the yodeling rock track in the training sequence still in? Was it distracting? There are uses of the classic theme, are they used well? Did it sound like a corny remix over the opening titles?

And one more, is the music for the credits anything special? Like the classic theme or anything?

I don't how how many of you have seen the honest trailers video for the original movie but here it is

http://youtu.be/pGemfKLV1JA

The movie came out in 1987 ( the year I was born) but I find it funny that a HARD R rated movie like that had toys marketed towards kids lol.

I am glad that the reviews have over all been positive, even the negative reviews day the movie isn't bad. It's just that some of the die hard fans of the original are nitpicking over things. Such as Alex's transformation to Robocop which is different from the original, Lewis is a male, The look of the suit, his voice, and how fast he is. I like the original but I am looking forward go seeing how this one stands up.

One question for people that have seen it. Do they use the old theme from the Title Card track off the sound track at any point during the movie? If so is it a awesome moment?

I already watched the original the day that brand new beautiful 4K blu-ray was released, watched it a few times just to enjoy how great it looked. I don't think I'll watch 2 again anytime soon, I did revisit the film a few months back and while I enjoy it, it's not something that I find all that amazing.

Besides the title card, the old theme is only used once during Novak Element. It was pretty funny though, knowing it as the old Robocop theme used in a parody show :woot:

The music is ok I guess, I never really pay attention to movie music unless it really stand out and catch my attention, and usually it's just one piece of said music(Eg The Dark Knight theme, Pacific Rim main theme and Pirates of Caribbean main theme). In this movie's case, the standout music for me is Hocus Pocus....

Hocus Focus' still in the training sequence, so probably a lot of you guys are not gonna be happy. I personally like the song and thought it really work well with the action sequences for some reasons :woot:

The ending credits was nothing special, just credits. The song used is this, seems to be a classic rock and roll

Yup. What SpideyZERO said.

I wish there was a prominent theme for this RoboCop...hearing the old theme again, even though it still kicks ass, felt a bit out of place. Similar to the part in Terminator Salvation when they played the old Fiedel theme when CG Arnie made his appearance.
