A small tidbit from an article done by ArnoldFans where they ask Verhoeven his opinion on the remake.

TheArnoldFans: The Total Recall remake was awful. Do you think the new RoboCop will be just as bad?

Paul Verhoeven: "I saw a part of the script of the new RoboCop and it seems to me they don’t want any humor in these movies anymore. It’s very strange. I think you need to look at some of these with a wink-wink and you should not take it completely serious because then it can become a little bit boring, I think. So I hope the new RoboCop is good but I have the feeling it’s not the case either (like the new Total Recall). But perhaps they’ve changed it and it was an old script that I saw? Sometimes you need to not take things so serious. Look at the biggest and most important innovation science fiction movie, which is Star Wars. That opened the road to many other movies. And I think Star Wars was funny and it was light. It was suspenseful but also lite. When we did Total Recall, we were certainly aware of Star Wars. I hope the people behind RoboCop do not take themselves too seriously."

That is a good point by Verhoeven. You can still be serious and suspenseful but a bit self aware.

Plus even if we want to go "realistic", humour is a normal part of every day life, even in dire circumstances.
 
It does seem that the new movie is a lot more serious in tone than the original, though that might not be a bad thing. For example, one of the funniest scenes in the original is, right after the ED-209 blows that one guys guts out in the board room at the beginning, the CEO turns to Dick Jones and says, "Dick, I'm very disappointed in you." It's like REALLY? THAT'S you're reaction to this? LOL.

But as great as that was, I don't think a scene like that would play as well in a modern movie; even a satire.
 
That's also a fair point. Verhoeven had a style that just can't and shouldn't be replicated. The way he played these utterly horrific things off in a light hearted way just can't be done by anyone else I don't think. Total Recall had a few moments like that too.

Even though his RoboCop was basically Judge Dredd, I'd loved to have seen his actual version of that character too.
 
That's a HUGE reason why I love the 80's era of filmmaking so much it's such a great product of it's time, it holds a special place in my heart.
 
all this robot news is making robocop 2014 look more like a documentary at this point. haha
 
I'm really curious how this film will do at the box office. I know it depends a lot on the quality of the film, but that opening day/weekend is very important. And while the original ROBOCOP is my favorite film, I just hope to be at least entertained by this. And if it does well, we will get sequels that we can compare to ROBOCOP 2 and 3. Which leaves room for improvement.
 
I hope they keep some of the humor in the new one, I loved those cheesy "commercials" in the first one.

that homemade trailer is funny. watch their other video with a side by side comparison. they put lot of attention into it.
 
I'm starting to see reactions to the film trickle out even though there is an embargo. All signs seem to point to "ok". Which I'd be ok with. But one might argue a remake needs to be more than "ok" to justify it's existence.
 
I would say that if this movie got "ok" review, it is already good enough. I suspect majority of reviews will be too clouded by the original movie to give this movie a bias free review. If this got just an "ok", it probably meant "good" or "great".

Most reviews will probably go like this: "It is a good movie, but not even close to the original. Watch the original."

That's probably a lot of the reason the movie was a hit to start with. I think it may have been Verhoeven's decision to make the whole thing a cheeky satire whereas the writers were going for something more straightforward and serious.

Those 7 little known facts aren't very unknown, anyone whos watched the extras on the last two blu-rays would know all of that stuff ;)

Very true :) I'm just loving how the reboot is generating all this new interest in both it and the original film and all things Robocop.
