Another review from Singapore. Similar in tone. 3/5 stars.

I'm starting to hope this is kind of Robocop's Batman Begins, in that it's a solid film that begins a story that can really flex it's muscles in the sequel.

But it doesn't reach its true potential. You get the feeling the movie is continuously hitting a glass ceiling
Sounds to me like the expected studio influence that the director was butting against. They tend to do that.

The performances are generally average, though the ever reliable Gary Oldman turns in a decent supporting performance as a scientist.
No mention of Keaton at all? Bull. We've already seen some scenes from him and know he's fantastic.

3.5/5 stars "Summary: It won’t be easy for die-hard fans of the original to warm up to this remake, but Padilha’s RoboCop is a surprisingly solid outing, benefitting from several clever story changes and a killer supporting cast."

This review seems to agree with most of the reports we saw a couple months back, like the lack of chemistry between Joel and Abbie. Everything else sounds good to me, though.

Embargoes aren't worldwide. You can't enforce it like that. Never happens. It's done by region. Only the US, Canada and the UK are really where embargoes matter since those are the countries with the most entertainment news outlets/readers.

Ah, okay. That makes sense.

The most accurate PKD type movie we'll probably every get in terms of tone/style. I liked it. Not one of my favs but solid.

it was a mind trip when i saw it in theaters. i was also drunk w/ my friends so that might not have helped. i should watch it again. we need more rotoscope animation movies.

so looks like robocop's out in asia already.
check out this sweet robocop movie stand in taiwan:

yea, its a cool statue just to advertise a movie. i don't think we're getting that here in the states.

i get a feeling that asia is showing more love for the new robocop than here.
it's probably because over there, trends come and go so fast, they probably don't remember or even know about the original RC.

I want that statue in my front yard, theres a security system for ya.

If a security system is something that will be stolen within 24 hours of setting it up, then... yeah.

I would just program Robo to shoot any unknown bystanders on sight, no one would dare enter my yard space :oldrazz:

I think why it maybe getting more love there is robots are more engraved into many of their societies such as Japan.

Welp. That's that. See you guys on the Turtles thread

yup, i grew up around mazinger z, super sentai, and robotech toys. then there was transformer, orbots, etc over here. i love most things that are pop culture + robots. that could be why i don't see a problem with them trying to create a new version of robocop. stuff is always getting revamped. why not let the studio revive a franchise that hasn't been on the big screen for almost 20 yrs now.
if its good, maybe it'll open up more RC stories.

^Is this your review of the movie Poni?

Good to see it getting some decent early reviews, I will be seeing this anyway but it getting good reviews is always a plus in my eyes.

haha can't tell if poni liked it or not.
robocop giving the bird = good or bad?

So the reaction thus far has been 'decent'? Good. As long as it isn't Total Recall, we might potential sequels with less studio interference in the near future. At any rate, fans of the original will be biased against this remake (which includes me as well), so I'll have to disregard the early negative reviews.

the studio interference rumors are most likely true. it's a gamble trying to revive a franchise with such a cult following, so mgm is trying to play it safe. they probably forced padilha to tone down certain things he wanted to put in the film. from sound of these reviews, seems like that is what happened, yet a decent film came out of this compromise.

That's the thing though, when you have truly talented people working under this type of pressure, something good will come out of it either way. A lot of directors and crew really screw it up, or just give up with these types of projects. It could have been better, I think we all know that, but Padhilla did what he could and I strongly believe that.
