The only new studio entry on the international scene this week was MGM and Columbia Pictures’ RoboCop which blasted its way into three territories in Asia. The movie, starring Joel Kinnaman, strategically bowed in Malaysia, Taiwan and Singapore – taking advantage of the Chinese Lunar New Year – and scored a strong opening with $5.5M and a No. 1 trifecta. Robocop does not yet have a China date, although that’s expected to be clarified shortly. Kinnaman plays the detective-turned-crime-fighting cyborg in the re-make of the 1987 sci-fi pic that’s helmed by super-hot Elite Squad director Jose Padilha. It will land in Latin America – where Padilha has a big following – after it rolls out next weekend in 40 international territories. It opens in the U.S. on February 12.

this will probably do pretty good internationally.
people around the world do love their robot...cops.
 
I don't know how much correlation there is between the Asian box office and American box office but I hope this bodes well.
 
they love robots more than we do here. as evidenced by pacific rim being #1 in china when it came out there.

iron-man does super-good over there too. and transformers.

robots!
 
There building and love for robots are untouched , there should be no problems over there.

As I could figure out with translate, it's an anti-remake, nostalgic, completely biased review from someone who remembers fondly the time whe he saw it on VHS at the age of 9... I guess we'll read more reviews like this.

I just dont get that attitude though, I saw the movie on WHS when I was 7 and still love it to this day, doesnt mean I will be automatically giving the new one a bad review. I am really looking forward to it in fact.

I think some people, even before seeing it, already decided to hate it and give it a negative review. Of course I havent seen it, maybe it's bad and we have been misled by some reviews, but somehow IMO it feels closer to good than bad.

I know imdb rating is not reliable, but if you remove the 1/10 and 10/10 votes, it's still strongly between 7 and 8... so far at least...

OH yes there will be PLENTY of these. Just like there were for man of steel. Somehow feeling as if it insults the original, when the original is still in tact and on blu ray. Go watch that then. Different movies for different folks. It's great to have diversity.

A year or two ago, I think you were getting ready to start filming, it was in the upcoming future, you talked to Christina on my site about the rating. One of the questions we asked you was about PG-13 or R. I’ve seen the movie, and it’s pretty violent for PG-13. Talk a little bit about the whole rating thing.

KINNAMAN: I think that was the first time I opened my mouth about RoboCop and I had a couple of brief conversations with Jose about what he wanted to do with the film, but I hadn’t gone into depth with it, and I didn’t really know that The Dark Knight was PG-13 as well, I didn’t know what you could get away with with PG-13. You know I haven’t been in the States that long, I haven’t done that many films on the US market. It was the first thing that popped out of my mind, but after seeing what we got away with with PG-13 that battle became quite irrelevant. And the original RoboCop by Verhoeven, he has a very specific idea when it comes to violence and how you portray violence. I mean, he grew up in the whirlpool of WWII and was very affected by that, and he had this idea that when you treat violence way over the top it becomes comedic.

The original RoboCop was X-rated and then they had to cut it down so it became R-rated and Verhoeven claimed that actually made the movie more violent, because it’s what you don’t see that actually scares you. And the violence of the of the original RoboCop was so much aligned with Verhoeven’s cinematic tone and his comedic tone, and our film is carrying Jose’s tone which he’s a completely different filmmaker, so the violence that we have in our movie completely makes sense in terms of who Jose is.

A hundred percent, and also let me jut say this since you can’t: The MPAA is full of ****. You can do crazy **** in a PG-13 movie, but the minute you have any bit of sex it’s rated R, but you can literally blow off people’s heads and it’s stillPG-13.

KINNAMAN: Yeah, but I don’t know that…you know, RoboCop’s not going to have that much sex.


[Laughs] No, I think we can agree. No but listen, again I’ve seen the film and you guys show a lot of stuff. A lot.


KINNAMAN: Some of the infrared stuff, that’s also an interesting thing that Jose experimented with in the movie and how you can show violence through infrared. It’s interesting.
 
Shrug. As far as I can tell Robofake only shoots Robots in this movie so it doesn't really matter what the rating is.

They made a superhero movie, so naturally it's PG-13.

Probably because Robocop is a classic. Of course people are going to compare it to an unnecessary remake that tones down everything that is Robocop.
 
Its perfectly fine to compare it to the original just as its perfectly fine to see it as its own thing.

Quote the opposite my friend. Not unnecessary remake. It's a Necessary reboot.

Everything that is RoboCop, is not the R rating. There is no "toning down" in the new film, because there is nothing to tone down. It's an entirely different film made by different people, with a new story and characters, with brand new rules. If this RoboCop doesn't deal with unnecessary blood and violence, then that's the rules it sets.

The rules of the 87 film were much different, and they belong in THAT film. That film IS a classic and cannot be touched, and IS NOT being touched. Thus a completely different RoboCop. A companion piece if you will. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" in this case. Especially when you have such talented people behind it. They may be compared, but they should not be unfairly compared, As most will do.

A remake of the original Robocop would be pointless. We already have that film.

Sigh. You just cant win either way with biased geeks/haters...

If you call it Robocop, that's no good because it's not the original 1987 beloved childhood fav movie. If you don't call it Robocop, then it's a rip-off...
 
reading the internet i found out that if you hate the new robocop movie you hate it because its not a remake of the old movie. if you like the movie than you are fair and gave it a chance.

humans are fascinating

Thank goodness some of us understand this. People forget that Robocop is not only a great 1987 film, that is in no way diminished by bad sequels, tv shows, or cartoons, but a great CHARACTER. He's such a great character that his story needs to continue for the next generation and can have different and no less valid interpretations just like Batman or any other great fictional character. About changing the name, that's silly. He's a robot cop. His name is Alex Murphy.

You do realize that this.. is a remake right? Of the first film. You have differences but it's a straight up remake. Same dialogue, same characters, same storyline, same hero, same gimmicks. It's a remake.
