I rewatched the Robocop trilogy this weekend... actually it was almost as good as watching the first time since I was very young when I first watched them, yet I remember liking the films, I even tried to built an ED209 with LEGO. I'd say I was more successful than its first presentation.

Anyway, I liked the first, a bit less the second and the third was a freak of nature, it was like a Marvel film... the funny thing is the overall story was actually very good on paper.

But was very clear to me is how different this Robocop will be thematically. It can be as good or even better than the original, but for different reasons. It certainly won't try to replace or duplicate the original.

"There are two groups of people who will go see the new Robocop reboot: those who have not seen the original, and are in for an action packed ride, and then those who have seen the original, and who will be treated to an updated take on the old story, a more serious look at the character, with some finesse for good measure."

I just scored free tickets to a Robocop advance screening on Feb 10. Stoked!

Yeah, no. There are many different types of people who will go see this movie. The majority of them just want a good movie.

Well, yes and no, everyone obviously is looking to see a good movie, no matter what. Tickets aren't cheap. But there are people who have and have not seen the original.

Most who have seen the original will have certain standards. That the new one probably won't measure up to.

People who haven't seen the first will have nothing to compare it to, taking that element away from their opinion.

Well I got my D-Box tickets for this Friday and met Abbie Cornish today so all in all it was a good day!

Again, they just want a good movie. Forcibly segregating who will see this particular movie into two camps is setting up factions for a nonsensical war. You know how you please fans who have bias? Make a good movie. Obviously you can't please the ultra diehards (just look at Star Trek, Evil Dead) but if you're going to remake a genre defining, critically acclaimed, Academy Award winning film you HAVE to go into it trying to do better or else what's the point? Then you have Total Recall, Carrie and a slew of other stuff that no one cares about. Want to silence naysayers? Just make a good movie. Regardless how much it deviates from the source material a good movie will stand on its own legs.

I'm sorry, but this attitude of accepting mediocrity just because you want something new is the very reason people shy away from remakes to begin with.

Thank goodness some of us understand this. People forget that Robocop is not only a great 1987 film, that is in no way diminished by bad sequels, tv shows, or cartoons, but a great CHARACTER. He's such a great character that his story needs to continue for the next generation and can have different and no less valid interpretations just like Batman or any other great fictional character. About changing the name, that's silly. He's a robot cop. His name is Alex Murphy.

Oh boy. You and I my friend are on the exact same level. Thanks for reassuring my faith in humanity haha.

And yea it could be called a "remake" but then going by those terms, I can call batman begins, man of steel, amazing spider-man all remakes as well technically. Because they were made again...but differently. That is not their original form. Someone made them first, then kept "remaking" them for 50-60-70+ years lol. That's why these characters have stood the test of time.

There's such a slight difference in the meanings that it honestly doesn't matter what it's labeled. Remake shouldn't be looked at as a derogatory thing though, that's what bugs me. As if it takes anything away from the original. Re-whatever you want to call it... It's meant to launch a brand new franchise(commonly referred to as a reboot, so that's why this is more in line with a reboot) Not some one off insult people are taking it for. It's a completely different take. The origin is the origin. You change Bruce's parents killer to joker, but either way he looses his parents and becomes batman. Just because RoboCop originated on film doesn't mean it should be so limited. Robocop deserves a proper legacy and at least a companion film! Which this new film can be. Even IF it's bad, it makes for great satire by even existing!

Again this is a character with a complex origin story, of course there are things you can't change but the new film is much different then the original. Surprising since you have seen it poni boy. You know the characters are completely different. You have 3 essential origin characters. Murphy, Male Lewis, and ed209. (For example having Batman, a female Gordon, Joker or *insert any main bat villain* in a batman movie lol, they are musts) Those characters even have slight changes. Otherwise Norton, Sellars, pope, Liz, Maddox, Novak and more are brand new characters! Even Murphy's wife and kid are different and play a legitimate part this time.

Once there is a new Robocop 2 and 3 and beyond, it will start to make sense for all the people who don't get it lol. RoboCop will be living the legacy through cinema, instead of literature. There's always an origin, there's alWays a starting point, wether it be books, or film. Great characters are great characters.

I agree on some parts about being a good movie, like I said, of course we all want a good movie no matter what. I'm not dividing anyone, just stating the facts. Some people have seen the original. Some have not. It will end up effecting some of their opinions! That's how people are lol.

The funniest part is that it's ALL subjective anyway so the discussion is pointless. Just because RoboCop 87 is some masterpiece to you, doesn't mean everyone loves it. I'm tellin you RoboCop is a tricky movie. A lot of people hate it, don't care for it. Or don't give give two ****s to even sit down and watch it! It's very polarizing. Trust me I grew up in that world, and I know plenty of RoboCop fans who have too. Some people love the new Total recall, or Carrie(which both have literary roots might I add). Those people have a great movie for themselves. Personally I haven't seen them so I can't comment. I surely wasn't against them though. For the record I didn't really like the new Evil Dead. It was mediocre to me. And I didn't "accept mediocrity" lol, but I surely wasn't against it happening in the first place, as I adore the evil dead franchise and welcome new interpretations.

If anything needs to at least TRY a reboot, remake, re-vitalization... It's ROBOCOP. Nobody is accepting mediocrity here. We want the best film possible for one of our favorite science fiction characters. If I don't like it, I won't like it, and won't support it. It'll be disappointing, but I will always have the original to go back to, as I have for around 21-22 Loong years. And I will NEVER be against a reimagining. Especially if the character had been previously dead and buried cinematically. (Ala batman in 1997 lol)

And what do you mean whats the point? Lol, if you never try, then we will never know if we could have the next great robocop movie! Not trying is trying to fail. If Jose didn't make it, then I would set out to become a Hollywood director and make the ****ing thing myself. The point is that this is a fantastic character that should have an everlasting legacy that's still alive 75+ years from now in comics, movies, toys, games... Like a Batman, or a Superman. Hes that good.

Well there's so much I disagree with you on that I may rant for paragraphs, I really don't want to do that, I need to go to sleep! we both have valid points though and you feel the way you feel. I know how I feel about the situation, and nothing will ever take my beloved Robo 87 away.

Thank you and likewise bub. To your point and the false equivalency that's implied by calling this movie a remake or whatever, EVERY REVIEW I've read, good, bad, and in between clearly say that this movie is it's own entity that beyond the title bears no resemblance to the original film and this is by design to anyone that has read a single interview or followed this film even casually. Same characters??? Robocop is the only character in both the original and this movie yeah? Carla Murphy, David Murphy, Dr. Dennet Norton, Raymond Sellars, Pat Novak, Rick Mattox, Jack Lewis, Liz Kline, Tom Pope, Chief Karen Dean, Jae Kim, Mayor Durant, Antoine Vallon, Senator Dreyfuss, etc, etc. No shared characters AT ALL besides Detective Alex Murphy. How is this a remake of another movie? The ONLY thing that's the same is that it's a Robocop origin story. Same dialogue??? There's like what 4 shared lines between both movies? Same storyline??? He dies in one movie and doesn't die at all in the other, and on and on.

No one is accepting mediocrity. We want a great film. I'll take a good film. Batman Begins is a good film. The Dark Knight is a great film. If this does well, I think the potential for a sequel to be that great Robocop film is very much there.

That would've meant that Robo3 was good.

Umm, its a reboot, not a remake. Can people call it that, because that's what it is

it's a reimagining and an homage at the same time.

It just hope its good. Would be a nice surprise.

it'll probably be one of the last movies i get to see in theaters before my wife gives birth. so i hope its good, as i probably won't have that many opportunities to go see movies on release for awhile after that.
