You're freakin' scaring me man. I remember you reviewing and loving the Wolverine, and I loved it too when I watched it. So Im scared to share your opinion on RoboCop 2014 when I watch it a few hours from now. Im a big fan of RoboCop 87, 8.5/10 from me. Hope this one gets at least an 8/10. I'll post a short review later.:csad:

Nah man, don't worry about it. It's not an outright "bad" genre movie. It's a remake in the vein of Carrie, Evil Dead and Total Recall (ironically enough they're all Sony/MGM properties)

Just watched this.

7.5/10 for me.

Good but not great PG13 RoboCop movie. Had some really brilliant/ unique/ emotional / dramatic scenes, but it also had some cringe worthy and cliche' scenes. Shaky action scenes also suck. Oldman and Keaton were fantastic. Black suit was okay since it meant something in the movie. The movie doesn't feel phoned in except for some of the action scenes. I'd make my kid watch this (when I get one) and he might become a RoboCop fan and when he gets older, he'll watch the real deal, and he'll be an even bigger RoboCop fan.

RoboCop 1987 8.5/10
RoboCop 2014 7.5/10

Told ya, nothing to worry about. The highlighted part is the best positive I can garner from this remake. It's Robocop for kids (aged 6 - 10), which will hopefully rekindle enjoyment and appreciation for the first film if they see it when they get older.

For kids? The same way Avengers and the Marvel films are for kids? I guess that's not a horrible thing to hear.

Yeah, but The Avengers was never meant to be a more adult movie, whereas, Robocop was.

this is sort of what i figured. mgm is trying to make a more "mainstream" robocop. there's still social commentary and relevance, but without the extreme gore and satire as verhoven's.
i guess it would be less risky to build a franchise off a movie when it's more of a studio tentpole style.

this could be a good thing, where u slowly ease your kids into the robocop films. let first let them see the 2014 one when they're 10 yrs old. then when they're 15-18, you tell them about the original and have them see that.

that way, you can spare them the trauma of seeing murphy's death when ur only just a kid! haha
i talk to my friends who are also RC fans, and we all watched it around 8-9 yrs old, and we'd all agree that murphy's killing haunted us.

Better than showing them robocop 3 lol.

It's a pretty hard pg-13, so it's for older kids technically, but I'd show my 3 year old the original RoboCop(when I first saw it) so what do I know lol.

I wonder if they let him shoot some pretty graphic stuff in order to later on do an Unrated edition, if so, I'd love to see it (especially after seeing The Wolverine's Unrated cut, that cut was excellent all-around and easily surpassed the original cut IMO). I'm excited to hear more reviews coming soon, I really do hope that this turns out to be a great film, even though I was against it originally, I've started to ease up on it now that some of the reviews so far seem to indicate that it's much better than the average Hollywood remake.

Both pg-13 with Sci-fi action other than the script/storyline which I'm sure is more sophisticated with adult themes, Robocop still looks like it's trying to be a fun time for all ages.

I doubt it because [BLACKOUT]the vast majority of the action is robot vs robot with infinite bullets missing their targets. It didn't have that feel of a toned down cut like Wolverine or Daredevil[/BLACKOUT]

That's the crux of my issue. Remember, RoboCop wasn't based off a comic or novel or game. The satire, vulgarity and ultra violence are as much part of the lore as the suit. By removing that you're making almost an entirely different product. In which case, just create an original movie (or quasi original like Pacific Rim). But they want to cash in on the brand in an effort to create a "safe" franchise just like they did with all their other recent remakes.

In terms of the reboot (a relatively new terms to the movie world) vs remake thing the 95% of the time they have the same meaning. The only reboots I can think of off the top of my head that are not remakes are Batman Begins (showing Bruce's origin for the first time, modernizing the timeline), Casino Royale (showing Bond's origin for the first time, modernizing the timeline) and The Incredible Hulk (changing the origin story and cast but keeping the same characters and continuing the story of Hulk).

The new Carrie, Evil Dead, Total Recall, RoboCop movies are remakes. Reboots, yes, but remakes. They are modernized and offer varying themes/characters but thematically and structurally they run parallel to their originals.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with this, especially considering what happened to the previous franchise when Orion wanted to make it more kid-friendly. It would be more conducive to accommodating sequels in this day and age to tone this new version down considerably from the nastiness of the original film - they won't have to water it down later.

The irony of this being more of a superhero flick for the family is that the original R-rated one got marketed to brats via the cartoon series and the toys.

Just read the Empire review.

Oh dear sounds like this sadly went the way some feared it would. Shame.

That sucks. That's why I hated that "Private Property" clip, just seemed so unrealistic with all of that poor CGI.

That was my biggest fear. The studio desired a watered-down Robocop to entice the younger generation. Fine, I get that. However, now the studio will have to find a new director (if the rumors are true).

FYI UK embargo is lifted. US one I believe is still in place

Total Film begs to differ, I knew critics and fans would be split down the middle on this I'm not surprised in the least bit.

That clip is roughly how 90% of the action is. Whether you like that or not is completely subjective. For me, CGI vs CGI vs CGI for long periods of time sucks. It's why I didn't like Pacific Rim.

Oh and having a horrible actor as the lead didn't sway your decision much?

I know some folks were rooting for the film, but I've heard stuff about the film. The struggles between the studio and the director, and the endless reshoots, so I just knew it would've been (at best) maybe a serviceable movie unless the hand of GOD saves the day. I also heard from a few buddies from the VFX world that it was a bit of a mess. Let's say no buddy knew what they wanted. MEH.

Even from the trailers, I was thinking 'Wow this is..generic." To be fair I personally haven't seen the film, but I just don't get the vibe it'll be remembered by April of this year.
