The Avengers The Avengers Box-Office Prediction Thread - Part 5

I don't understand the focus on how it does in the box office. Shouldn't it be more important if the movie is good or not? After all, Transformers made a lot of money, even though it sucked.
Heh, well, that is the point of this thread. :woot:

We already know the movie is good. And this is a box office thread, so we talk about box office.

Bunch of other thread to talk about what ever you wish talk about regarding this great movie. Be our guest.

4 years later, inflation, more screens/theatres, international box office taking off and 3D.

Just sayin'....

True. But TA is also one of the most rewatchable movies of its kind, has mass appeal to all age groups and is probably the most comic bookey comic book film made to this day. Let me get back on topic. How much did TA make today? :D

I think they should go a different route. Do a World's Finest movie with just Batman and Superman, and have it end with a bigger threat coming and the two realizing they will need other heroes to stop it.
Thinking the same thing.

I have to admit though, what made Avengers exciting for me wasn't just seeing Thor, Cap, and everyone else on screen at the same time. It was also that we as an audience were already familiar with the actors in their roles from the other movies, and got fleshed out backstories on most of them.
True. But what made it work was the interaction between the characters. Having them like a dysfunctional family is something we, the audience can relate to.

If Avengers & TDKR opened near each other I would have to split my number of rewatches between them rather than being able to go exclusive.
The way you describe these films, you would think they are chicks lol.

Avengers is going up against Transformers the Boat version

Battleship is more like a poor man's version of Batlle: Los Angeles, which was a poor man's version of Bay's Transformers, which is a poor man's version of The Avengers. No matter which way you cut it, we all lose.

Yes, let's not talk about the box office in the BOX OFFICE THREAD. :whatever:

And the movie is quite good. Michael Bay wishes his Transformers movies could be this good.

Well, this IS the box office thread, so if we want to stay on topic we should be discussing about the historic second week that The Avengers has enjoyed by breaking Avatar's old record.

This is the box office thread so to complain about the box office discussion and things like that is silly. Fans will always be interested in how well these movies do and talking about it, it's just a fact.

Also, I think few can deny how exciting it is for a movie we've waited years for to be hitting such landmarks, breaking records, and setting new ones.

Don't know if you guys are into the whole YouTubers top subscribers, but Nigahiga (#2 in the all-time YouTubers list) just made an Avengers vid today!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdRiSjbpZjQ&feature=plcp

He does comedy, and this only helps advertises the Avengers since his video gets an average of 3 to 4 million views. And he has over 5 million subscribers to his channel :woot:

Well, this was the movie event I waited for since the after credits scene of Iron Man back in 2008. I promised myself I would not commit suicide and determine to be alive to see May 4th. I could not have predicted such a spectacular BO triumph. It is entirely possible that Spider-Man may even pull off an upset and beat TDKR in both Domestic and WW grosses. We are seeing the triumph of quality films and boy is it ever SWEET.

I made the following predictons on April 23 2012

I love all comic book movies and look forward to both Avengers and TDKR: But realistically, Avengers is tracking higher than Hunger games opening and with a 96% positive rating on rotten tomatoes, it will probably open above 150 million.
my predicitons:
THE AVENGERS 500-550 million
THE DARK KNIGHT RISES 450-500 million
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: 290-340 million
BRAVE: 230-280 million
MIB 3: 200-250 million
Expendables 2: 170-220 million
GI JOE 2: 160-210
Total Recall 150-200
Prometheus: 150-200 million

I have to give kudos to the following poster on page 8 from the same link who rightly predicted 200 mil. OW:

You're way too low on "The Avengers" man, "Hunger Games" opened with 152 million, you're telling me you think 'Avengers' will only open with 136 million. What planet are you on, have you seen the buzz this film has been getting, i don't recall seeing anything quite like this, it will be a juggernaut. Don't be suprised if "The Avengers" tops 200 million in it's opening weekend.

Depends if you want Marvel Studios to have a future or not. This film would never have happened without the box office of the prior films, Iron Man in particular. So without this 'focus' there would be no discussion thread about whether it was good or not. :yay:

Don't see any way it can't make over $550 million at this point.

I had faith that it would make a lot, but I honestly had no idea it would be this colossal. I'm glad for it.

Avatar at $68 million. I don't think it'll beat it but it should come in around $55-60 million.

I agree that it's a long shot, but then again not many of us would've thought that TA would make 103 mil in its second week, so you never know.

I don't think there is a way! $500m at the end of the weekend after next. From there it's going to get there, just a question of whether it smashes through it or limps through it.

Haha missed that. For THESE films, as good as man! Avengers & Nolan Batman are marriage material. Battleship you have to be passed out drunk & you'd probably still say no.

I hope it ends up number 1. Avatar and Titantic don't deserve the top 2 spots.

Same. I find it despicable that Cameron's worst two movies are the top two grossing movies of all-time. I really think he put almost all of his talent into Terminator 2 with the last of it going into True Lies & then WHAM no more talent in Cameron.

But I doubt Avengers will get 700 mil Domestic & 2 bil WW. :(

At the end of the day I want to know about tickets sold because that will stop the inflation/3D boost arguments.
That shouldn't even be an argument because whatever movie they may be "defending" also passed a lot of movies that sold more tickets. Funny time to worry about that now! :)

Making more money with 3D is more impressive to me than just inflation alone though. That means the audience agreed to pay more because they thought the movie was worth more. They actually had the option to pay less. With just inflation the audience has no choice but to pay more.
This movie reminds me of the great Annual issues Marvel put out in the 60's.
If you'll indulge me first a little history for the young ones at SHH who weren't born in simpler times.
In the mid 60's when reading and collecting comics there were only 12 marvel titles.
Some of the issues had to combine some of their hero's to give them exposure since Marvel was delegated only so many slots on news stands to sell their wares. The world was controlled by DC and Marvel wasn't considered much of a threat so they weren't muscled out of the Market.
How times have changed! lol
I'll never forget running down to the corner mom and pop convenience store to buy comics with my $1.50 allowance burning a hole in my pocket and always knowing if the newest issues had arrived by the smile on the store owners face when I walked in.
It was our bond. lol
I'd grab my 10 issues, Avengers, Spiderman, X-Men, Daredevil, Thor, Strange Tales (Fury/Dr. Strange), Tales of Suspense (Iron Man/Cap), Tales to Astonish (Sub-Mariner/Hulk), Fantastic Four and others then rush home to read them from cover to back while getting lost in the world of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and many other fine artist.
At 12 cents a piece my allowance went quite a ways in opening up a world that DC comics couldn't capture at that time.
I was hooked on Marvel!
The only thing I looked forward to more then the monthly issues was their once a year Annual Issues reserved for their biggest titles.
We're talking at least double the length stories filled with more action! larger splash pages and pin ups all for 25 cents a piece!
Big time fun for a kid in grade school and budding artist. :-)
That's what The New Avengers movie is to me!
The accumulation of the single issues (prior movies) all brought together into one big glorious Annual Issue "Marvels Avengers" (the movie).
It's the only way to describe it through these seasoned eyes. :-)
It brought me back to those simpler times of Annual issues and a $1.50 burning a hole in my pocket.
It brought me back to the joy of getting lost in the world of Marvel but now my comic page was the size of a Imax screen and the 13 dollar ticket price was burning a hole in my pocket.
Simpler times indeed... or at least for a couple of hours. :-)
Nuff said!
That's pretty cool. This must have been special for a lot of old-time comic fans.

yes it was my friend, yes it was! :-)

I hate his last 2 movies with a passion also, but in very different ways. I hate Titanic for being overly long and too much of a chick flick; Avatar because while the visuals are great, the story is just too rehashed and environmentally preachy.

No more talent Cameron? Really? I love Terminator dude...but to say there is no talent in Titanic or Avatar...Titanic deserved every bit of it's long reign as highest grossing movie.

Of course I'd much rather see The Avengers at #1.
