Money talks alright. But the meaning of that is different. Was Transformers 2 a great movie because it made big money?

Avengers was a commercial and critical success so this Michael bay thing that people like to throw around doesn't stick. 93 score on rt including 38 out of 42 top critics. A+ cinemagrade score and 96 percent audience rating. Transformers doesn't come close to any of those scores.

It's OFFICIAL!

Marvel's The Avengers as of 06-26-12 is now currently at $600,377,080.

I'm now predicting ~ $625 million before it's run has ended.

Oh that look's nice on the Boxofficemojo page now

Somewhere there is a raving fanboy who predicted all this months ago. And he's feeling pretty good about himself right now ;-)

I've been on the Avengers definitely over $1BN bandwagon since the Fury cameo in IM1 before they announced anything. Luckily everything that came after gave me no reason to change that. I was also behind $500m domestic but I thought it would creep to that figure kind of following TDK's figures very closely. Would certainly not have called an opening weekend of over $200m, a 2nd weekend over $100m and a final gross clearing $600m while still making almost $1m on its weekdays. International is not a surprise to me though as the nature & scale (not quality) of the film is more like a disaster/Transformers film than a traditional comic film.

Last time I called one of these big dogs was Avatar although the international figures were so huge that my over $1BN call doesn't really seem worth anything after it got to nearly $3BN. :woot:

He probably shouldn't have ended his statement that way.
You do know this is the box office thread, correct? Where we talk mostly about numbers and how the movie is performing financially?
No, Transformers 2 was not a great movie in any sense of the word. But seeing as how it ended up making almost a billion dollars it was an undeniably successful movie. And who would have thought that the Avengers would end up joining ranks with some of the most successful movies of all time, surpassing all but 2? Certainly not the multiple detractors I was referring to in my original post. :oldrazz:
And to drive my point home even further: the Avengers not only received near unanimous critical acclaim and fantastic word of mouth, but people turned out in droves to see it. I'd definitely call that a great movie.

If we keep the discussion to box office figures we won't attract the vultures looking to pick away at the success. There are no ifs & buts when it comes to the raw numbers lol.

In fairness, it's possible those people were, in fact, smoking crack. It still might be an accurate statement :yay:

I've perused through that for a couple of hours just searching for talk about the Avengers, and I was facepalming sooooo much ha

I was on the extremely optimistic front, but I couldn't imagine it would get that high.
I couldn't be happier.

I've been on the billion $ bandwagon from the moment I saw the end credits of Captain America. It only makes sense, PERFECT sense, I have no idea what people who didn't think it'd make over a billion were smoking though.

Amazing how clueless some people are. What part of "box office prediction thread" do you not understand? Lol . And to make the most obvious point that everyone has read a million times. Thanks for tip! Sheesh.

And the term "vulture" is spot on.

Seriously though, Im going 629 million final tally. Is this too conservative?

I'd go with 625 myself. I like yours more, though.:cwink:

Avengers should outlast all the (non-animated at least) films out at the moment.

Hehe here are some of the gems quoted from that thread:

The Avengers is going to make 300 million AT MOST and possibly less. I think fanboys are just crazy for it

Exactly. I have no more need to explain myself.
Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, etc all appeal to the same demographic. In other words, the same people that went to watch Thor are the same people who watched Iron Man who are the same people who watched Hulk, etc. Therefore its safe to say that avengers will be as successful as the most successful spinoff movie (in this case the Iron Man series where each made around 300 million). So the 400+million predictions are absolutely ridiculous in all honest and quite frankly I don't even think it will hit 300 million (but of course this is just an early prediction without a trailer or even synopsis). 200+ is guaranteed though

think The Avengers will be hurt internationally with all the Americana in it unless the first movie has no country specific villains and they keep the Americana to a minimum.

t
his is a thread about the BO. so lets talk about money. Avengers trailer is out. looks like a fanboy's dream movie.

the trailer doesnt make it look like a movie everyone must see.i think it will underperform so much that fans will cry like babies.

p.s.: Marvel is so cheap that they used a shot from IM 2008 and a 2D promo image from Johanson.

The Avengers is probably going to be the most over predicted movie of the year. I really only expect like a little over Iron Man numbers domestically. 350mil at most after a massive start. I just feel that the same people who saw all of the films will see this one and that it won't grow much if any new audience.

The Dark Knight Rises midnight IMAX showings are already sold out in New York and LA.

Anyone who still maintains that The Avengers or The Hobbit can even match, let alone eclipse TDKR this year, or said TDK made all that money just because Ledger died better prepare themselves to feast on some lovely crow.

The Avengers has no chance of out grossing Rises anywhere
