I know that it may seem to be an uphill battle, but in my heart of hearts, I want to believe that people are wanting a bright, hopeful and uplifting Superman film. If it turns out to be as good as we hope, I could see it resonating with audiences in the same way as a Top Gun: Maverick where it is a must see event in a theater.
FINGERS CROSSED!

I honestly don't think it is going to be that much of an uphill battle...I think most people don't care and as long as the trailer looks cool will decide based on that. I think people around here overthink things way too much because of the bubble we are in.
Yeah, I don't think of it in terms of "brand damage" or anything. My stance on misconceptions like that has been pretty clear. I just don't know how receptive general audiences will be to more superhero content at a time when even the MCU's popularity has been waning. Sometimes people can be fickle with their pastimes, or things merely fall out of favor. There are additional factors: Gunn and Safran's recent comments, for instance, indicate a more experimental approach to certain properties, such as Clayface, which can be very exciting but also a little risky. In that sense, "uphill battle" might be a tad strong, but the implication there is merely that the DCU probably won't be a slam dunk from the get-go. I say this as someone who genuinely wants it to succeed.

NGL, I've never been into bald guys or Nicholas Hoult but for some reason this is the first time I've ever found him attractive. :funny:

While Gunn’s track record with CBM’s is certainly encouraging, I remain cautious because this is the first one that feels outside of his usual wheelhouse. He’s doing something different here, which could be a great thing, but also could be like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. We just don’t know because he’s never done a character like Supes before. Which is both exciting and a little nerve-wracking for me lol. But like I said, cautiously optimistic. I at least know he has a better handle on what audiences want and is a competent storyteller, so that’s two things he’s got going for him that the last guy didn’t. In that sense, I AM pretty confident I’ll at least enjoy this better than the previous incarnation, which ain’t nothing.

Also, not listening to Sneider’s latest reports on the runtime or screening any more than his previous reports on this film.
Yeah, for me it's a bit the same: from what I've seen, Gunn can seem like a "one trick pony" and the connection with Superman isn't obvious... but he's also said a lot of things in interviews that make me think he could be going in the right direction.

Who knows the outcome, but I can also totally imagine a scenario where Gunn continuing to alienate fans regarding Superman's general on-screen treatment while still delivering a more popular film than the previous modern adaptation.
Even I, who am not a great fan of his cinema, must admit that the few films and series I have seen of his are always at least entertaining (with the exception of GOTG2, which I found very bad...and which was the last of this series that I saw...). So, there's that.

I totally get what this is going for, and I do believe this light, friendly Superman is the way to go...

... but it also reminds me of Levy's Shazam a bit... which is... a danger. :funny:

I take these " test screenings scoops" with a grain of salt at this point.

It becomes too tempting for fans to cherry pick the allegedly positive ones ,and the allegedly negative ones, to fit whatever bias they lean towards.

In terms of how I'll feel about a project, I've got to see it for myself .
Agree. I’ve gone into movies thinking I’ll love it based on what I’ve read, only to find myself feeling the opposite.

I would’ve probably been 100% in agreement with you a few years ago about Gunn. But then GOTG 3 came out. It still had the humor, but it also had extensive weight and maturity. It was very well balanced. Funny without being silly; while also serious and weighty without being depressing. In many ways, it fits the balance that I want from a Superman film.
My only lingering concern with Gunn is that his humor that he prefers still seems to err on the side of immature, “potty humor.” I don’t see where that would fit with the sensibilities of a Superman film.

Totally agree about the humor in Gunn's films. It's potty, as you said, and often seems completely divorced from the plot or character, which never helps... It's a criticism I made about Creature Commando: sometimes it seems that rather than mixing his sensibility with the existing material, Gunn forces his voice on the characters. Superman being such a strong icon, this will be a true test. We'll see!

I'm hearing a lot of good thing about GOTG3. If I had to watch a Marvel film again since Endgame (which I also found a lazy mess...), I guess this is a good candidate!

The only things I recommend, for my personal taste, to watch are:
1. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3

2. Loki S1/S2
1000031021.webp
3. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

The rest is all mediocrity or unwatchable.
And I understand you, I also did not appreciate Endgame.

Speaking as a non-fan of the Guardians films, I would say GotG3 is easily the best one to me, and yes, probably the best MCU film post-Endgame.

A big part of my optimism for this project is the fact that it’s being made by the James Gunn who made that film, and not the one from a decade ago, because it gave me the impression that he’s grown as a storyteller.

FINGERS CROSS- well, YOU KNOW!

The latter especially veers very heavily into drama, so I' m always surprised when people think that James Gunn couldn't possibly handle a character like Superman without making a comedy out of it. I'd expect the tone of it to be in the vein of the Tim Burton Batman, Sam Raimi Spider-Man and Joss Whedon's Avengers.

With a sense of humor, but with serious stakes and genuine emotions.

"Super" is to me, together with "The Incredibles" the best non-cbm-CBM of all time.

You wouldn't think that Richard Donner would be the right choice to direct Superman after you've seen The Omen, just like Tim Burton didn't exactly scream Batman coming off of Pee wee's Big Adventure.

Be a little more open minded, folks . Have some vision.

You are asking a lot from comic book fans.
