Heck with it, the biggest batch is home, let's focus on getting the deal sealed and the rest home.

Makes me hope Venom bombs and I'm usually not one to hope a movie fails
It's surprising to think that Disney even agreed to this deal. When you consider that Disney made nothing from Homecoming and will make nothing from far from home. Then letting iron man show up in a Sony produced film.
When you look at this deal it actually sucks for Disney. I'm surprised they didn't say ether let us buy the rights back or no deal back in 2015.
This deal is historic just simply seeing two rival studios work together to give the fans what they wanted and asked for, for so long. If this deal doesnt get extended you can't deny it was a historic moment in comic book movie history and one day I hope we learn what the fine print was and how it all went down.
We know bits and pieces. But you could write a book on it.

They might be looking at it from a different angle. Disney acquired all of Spideys merchandise rights, which is where the real money is at. Films can also be giant advertisements for merch. A bad film is bad for all aspects of the franchise so they'd want to make sure that they are good and align with how they want to advertise the Spider-man property.
Things like the new Spider-Man game is where they are getting their money from and unlike films it's all year round. Toys, posters, games, etc.
All of this is just a guess though and I'm probably wrong.
Bit out of date but in 2014 spiderman was earning $1.3bn a year in merch sales. He earned more than the avengers, abatman and superman put together.

Disney need him in films otherwise fans will buy other products.
I've been saying the same for awhile to deaf ears and blind eyes. The 2015 was extremely one sided to Sony. At the end of the day it was a chess move by Disney where they sacrificed a bishop to get the queen, or maybe even the king.
Merchandise deal was in 2011. The leaked documents have been pretty clear that classical spider man merch is pretty consistent. Merch gets a boost even when the movie sucks like Amazing 2. This would have been true if the docs showed the merch, including classic merch, took a deep dive post Amazing series. That wasn't the case.
2014 is when Amazing 2 came out, arguably the worst modern Spider-man movie. Your link strengthens the opposite argument of your post. Spidey is a consistent merch seller even if the movie sucks. Btw lately the Avengers have gotten significantly stronger and closed the gap as well. Christine McCarthy mentioned the Avengers merch sales in the most recent Q call.
I wonder if Sony would trade merchandising rights for the movie rights. They seem to regret letting go of the merchandise in 2011. The movie rights would benefit Disney and marvel more in the long term. But then I can also see the appeal of having Spider-Man merchandise on the shelf at Disneyland

No way is Disney letting go of the merchandise rights. As other have said, that brings in more revenue than the movies do.

Not my point. The point was that they would want movies coming out as well as cartoons to keep spidey in the spotlight. A one off bad film wont kill the merch but a few will. No films at all will slow sales as well. Disney having marvel make them will be pleased as will using spidey in their films.
In 2014 yes. After that year you might be surprised.This.
Spider-Man merchandise does bigger numbers than the Avengers, Batman and Superman..
Hmm, interesting. Though I have seen articles like this that have the cape crusader ahead of Spidey in toy sales in 2017 coming in at #5
The Licensing Letter listed Marvel's Spider-Man global retail sales at $1.3 billion and Avengers at $325 million in 2013, compared with DC's Batman at $494 million and Superman at $277 million.

How the Heck does Paw Patrol come in over Avengers? And wasn't Peppa Pig cancelled
Can't wait for the Paw Patrol Cinematic Universe.Although it remains the No. 1 brand, the House of Mouse is facing increasing pressure from up-and-comers like Paw Patrol and PJ Masks as well as its own brands like Star Wars and Frozen. TLL estimates that in 2018, Disneys top two brands will see at least a 10% drop in global retail sales while Nickelodeons Paw Patrol will continue to grow internationally.
From The Licensing Letter:

I literally had no idea what Paw Patrol was until today.
Well it's worked for the Fantastic Four now, so may as well hope a movie like Venom fails so audiences don't have to suffer greedy decisions. It just makes me feel bad for the cast and crew, who gave it their all to create what they would hope to be a good film.
Did they really, though?
How hard was it to research the proper pronunciation of symbiote?
If they didn't bother with that detail, which is directly linked to the title character, makes you wonder how hard they tried, if at all.
. When X-Men and FF finally revert back to Marvel, I wonder if they will start moving up the chart as well because Disney will probably start making their merchandises. We might see a Wolverine plushie at the Disney Store!
