They really should just eat the production costs for Dark Phoenix and put it on the shelf.

Release The New Mutants on Netflix or Disneyflix though. I am so intrigued by that trailer, it doesn't make any sense.

I doubt it is 9% on RT bad. The X-Men films have not quite hit THAT level at any point. I see same ballpark as Apocalypse.

Simon Kinberg and Josh Trank managed 9%, and I believe Josh Trank is the more talented of the two.

It would be an achievement of note. Call me crazy, but if anyone is up to the task, I believe Kinberg can do it.:woot:

Keep in mind, three of the nine films for which he has writing credit were 16% or below, so he's no slouch in this department. And with the complete control of directing as well, I am very confident in his ability to get a terrible rating.

Fan4stic was the reimagining of a franchise. Dark Phoenix has a returning cast that has fans. That is a stronger foundation.

I think Dark Phoenix could be on the same ballpark of either JL or BvS in terms of quality. Take your pick.

Just to be clear, I never seriously predicted it would get 9%. I said: "they'll hope it gets better than 9% on Rotten Tomatoes and light the candle."

And they'll probably be safe in the assumption it won't do as badly as Fant4stic (which was what I was saying the studio would assume).

But returning cast and fans don't really make for a good movie - they just give the studio the arrogance to assume they'll have some people in the seats even with a bad movie.

Let's not forget, Sophie Turner will be carrying this. She's not exactly Meryl Streep.

I never said it would be good. But I do think a returning cast can prevent the film from plateauing to the level we're talking about here. They have experience in the roles and foundations to build off of, and at the very least someone like James McAvoy will likely give a good performance. When I picture this movie being bad, I picture something closer to JL. Not Fan4stic level. Bad but in a meh kind of way. Not in a rage inducing way.

Keep hope alive that Simon Kinberg can make a good film! :oldrazz:

It also has more money behind it. Just being somewhat professional looking is usually good enough for 25-30%.

If they are going to release Dark Phoenix and New Mutants, then the best course of action would be to make it a generic one about people with powers. Basically an X-Men knock off like The Darkest Mind, however make it very removed from the X-Men as 90% of people are looking forward to see them in the MCU and don't care about this at all.

Call it Red Witch and Trapped.

"50 Shades of Jean Grey" I say!

Or 50 Shades Darker Phoenix.

I don't think Disney has said they'll release the films. I remember seeing an article (a week ago?) that had a headline indicating something like that, but when I read the actual text, there was nothing from Disney saying they'd release the films. If you can find the article, read it again. I think you'll find nobody at Disney is making any commitments.

... but with that said, Dark Phoenix will almost certainly be released in theaters since it's scheduled to be released before the deal is expected to close.

And I can't see Disney jumping in and stopping New Mutants the moment the deal closes, so that one will likely be released as well.

The only chance I see is if Fox themselves decide Dark Phoenix isn't ready for its February release.

I think Dark Phoenix will be released in February. It will be awful, and Disney will take possession of a dead X-Men franchise.

That definitely is an interesting point about it being secondhand information. I wish we had more official information to go off of with all our speculations- from either Marvel or Fox, really.

There have been a lot of mention of quality clauses in the original contracts, but has that ever been confirmed? I think I see that as the biggest possibility of saving us from these inevitable trainwrecks.

I don't know. I think at this point they know the re-shoot schedule and they know what remaining work they have (and they're likely to cut a lot of corners in terms of special effects etc. to keep the budget from getting any bigger), so they know if they'll have something ready to go by February or not at this point. And they haven't pushed it off yet, so I think they're charging ahead.

I suspect they're just slapping together enough to have something they can call a complete movie, and they'll hope it gets better than 9% on Rotten Tomatoes and light the candle.

I'd like to think it would get delayed again, but another delay would indicate they're trying to make it better, and I doubt they're going to put much more effort than they already have.

Dude, stop. The acquisition won’t be close to done by February 2019. Fox will release it and that’ll be it. I’m not so sure about “New Mutants” since it’s an August release, but “Dark Phoenix” will come out as scheduled.

Riiight. With all of the rumored reshoots, you think it's not getting delayed again? New Mutants has already been delayed twice. We have seen zero promotional material for DP as of late and the movie comes out in 6 months

And the acquisition closes first quarter of 2019. That could he anywhere between January 2019 to April 2019

Didn't they say first half? I've seen a lot of people saying first quarter, but I can't find a source.

You tell me to stop and then just restate pretty much exactly what I said.
