Yeah, Gwen's death changed comic books and I think the profound effect it had has been exemplified in the film. People DON'T go into the film expecting the superhero's true love to die, they're superheros right? They can save anyone? What this movie showed so well is the bitterly human side of the superhero, that sometimes things don't work out, and tragic things happen.
I think that's why the scene will resonate with a bunch of people. They gave us Peter and Gwen so authentically , they built them up meticulously over two films, and what we got were characters we were invested in. We heard about their future, their past, their struggles and their triumphs, and all that got ripped away by the harsh reality of mortality. Even though the time theme was slightly campy in the way it was portrayed, it was still profound and moving.
It was a truely beautiful scene, tragic, but beautiful.
