IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that The Dark Knight Rises has passed the $100 million global box office mark in 557 IMAX® theatres worldwide after its 7th week of release. As of Sept. 3, 2012, the film reached a total of $65.1 million from 332 IMAX screens domestically and $37.3 million from 225 IMAX screens internationally. These figures include box office receipts from China, which began playing the film on Aug. 27 in 75 IMAX theatres. The Dark Knight Rises represents the second IMAX DMR® film to cross this milestone, after Avatar.

"The Dark Knight Rises: The IMAX Experience" is still playing in IMAX theatres worldwide. For theatre locations and showtimes visit IMAX.com/Theatres.

While making the 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan was the first filmmaker to use IMAX cameras in a major motion picture release. Nolan employed the extremely high-resolution cameras even more extensively on "The Dark Knight Rises: The IMAX Experience" —including the film's prologue — incorporating a record of more than an hour of footage filmed with IMAX cameras. These specific sequences, which expand to fill the entire screen exclusively in IMAX, deliver unprecedented crispness and clarity and a truly immersive experience for moviegoers.

Sequences filmed in 35mm have been digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

IMAX beats the crap out of 3D for me.

IMAX is what I thought of as a kid when given the option of Widescreen vs. Fullscreen, to me it was a clear to have the full frame rather then have it cut off on the top and bottom. Wasn't until I was 15 that I realized what the difference was. IMAX however is my choice to get to truly see the whole picture.

My broader, worldwide gross guess was more than Inception, less than TDK. Glad to be wrong though. :)

Interesting tidbit.

TDKR is the highest grossing Batman film of all time, and there's no Joker to be found, breaking the 23 year streak of "The Joker films gross the highest"

It looks like this will be TDKR's last weekend in the top 10. They're estimating $3.4m for the weekend and it being at #10.

Its cume with that is $438 total. I can't see it reaching $460 for 6th but it's certain to pass shrek 2 for 7th. I wonder if $450m is still in the picture?

I'm more interested in how it did outside the US this weekend - that will give a good indication of whether it can get $1.1Bn+ or not. I'm thinking it should be #9 Worldwide after this weekend. #8 is also possible.

Conservative projections would make the movie earn (including this week-end) another 10 million or so before the last weekend of september.
That would put its domestic numbers around 445 million on October 1st.

So if I had to guess, I'll say that 450 millions are more or less out of the picture now but if it ends its september run with a cume around 448 instead I'm sure WB will do everything to make it reach that milestone.

Ah so it's passed E.T. I think it'll crawl past Shrek 2 but $450 is out of the picture now.

It will be at 9 th position soon, replacing POTC: On Stranger Tides.

where will it end up in the world wide tally finally ?

I still think #6 Domestic is possible.

Its got 7 weeks left to bring in $23 Million.

Less than 60 million to get just over 1.1 billion. That's what I predicted and I'm sticking to it.

Looking at the numbers it has to perform better than TDK did after Labor Day to reach #6 so chances of that are pretty slim.

It's just disgusting that something like Transformers is in the Top 5. Same for Pirates in regards to the Top 10.

Does it have a chance at cracking $1.1b? Will there be a re-release come Oscar season?

Nope. And a re-release wouldn't add anything substantial anyway.
