RT's being too hasty with the consensus thing. Will they change the consensus when the couple hundred reviews come out in the following few days ?

You know what's weird? I made a bold prediction a while ago that The Hunger Games would get a better RT score than TDKR. I don't necessarily want that to happen, but it looks like it actually could, which I did NOT expect. Granted, it's still early. I think TDKR will end up around the 87%-92% range.

Yeah but if you use RT scores as a scale of quality, that would mean Ghost Protocol is better than Avengers and on the same level of TDK, it doesn't work that way...especially if you consider average score (7.7) In that case TDKR is currently sitting higher than most movies this year at the moment with an average rating of 8.7. I hate how RT downplays the average rating because it took me quite a while to understand how important they are when it comes to gauging films for me.

The first part is great, but why the comparison to TDK? why not jsut a consensus on it's own merits as a movie?

Partly because this is a sequel to TDK and Nolan wouldn't make another one unless he thought he could top TDK, so I would assume that it would be compared, no matter how different and self-contained it may be.

That consensus is tad premature. Would have been smarter to wait for a few more review to come in, maybe even wait til Friday.

The consensus really is confusing when the majority of the positive reviews say that it's at least on par with TDK. Guess we'll have to wait and see if the consensus changes (even Wikipedia is already on the "not as good as TDK" wagon).

It seemed alot of the appeal of TDK was that it was a great stand-alone Batman movie, and alot of the appeal of TDKR so far is how it ties everything up and brings everything back around to the beginning of the trilogy. Those unfamiliar with the entire trilogy might simply be looking for something to "top" TDK, while missing all the little nods and themes relating back to the beginning of the trilogy.

And as a trilogy capper. If Nolan pulls off a trilogy of well-received Batman films, it'll be the first time in the history of the superhero genre. To me, that deserves a ton of praise. It's the rarest of feats in the genre.

Unlikely, I've never seen them change the consensus. Irritating, it's WAY too early for a consensus, especially when many critics have said TDKR is the best of the trilogy. WTF is RT thinking?

Absolutely.

Huh.

Way to hastily and unfairly undercut a film within it's "Consensus", RT.

To be honest with u i was never too crazy with the full circle stuff...i feel thats the mistake most 3rd movies make

Sticking the landing on a trilogy is rare, no matter the genre.

I'm pretty much left with Apur Sansar, Return of the King, and... I'm at a loss.

RT is really dropping the ball here

my guess? the same people who were leaving those psycho comments are now pestering them to post the consensus, so they did.

What the heck is going on at RT? Kirk Honeycutt of the Hollywood reporter, submitted a mixed review that showed up negative. It then was changed to positive, but he lost his top critic status?

The Dark Knight Rises' Review: Falls Short of Bat-Legendary

"Merely great feels like the most backhanded of compliments, but when a filmmaker is coming off a one-two punch of pop masterpieces like "The Dark Knight" and "Inception," expectations get invariably raised for what comes next."

"In many ways, Bane is a thankless role for the talented Hardy. Not only does he have to spend the entire film with most of his face hidden and his voice distorted, he's got the unenviable task of stepping into the void left by Heath Ledger's indelible Joker."

"As trilogy wrap-ups go, "Rises" won't raise the fanboy hackles of, say, Return of the Jedi, but neither will it feel like the revelation of The Dark Knight."

LoL at this review. Its not the Dark Knight and there is no Heath Ledger.

I was referring more towards Bruce's "mission statement", more so than the League of Shadows or Ra's stuff.

Bourne Ultimatum. Toy Story 3. And you're right, it's really rare. But this genre in particular has been extremely frustrating because we've had some franchises that had a chance to pull it off and then failed miserably.

Superman - 2 great movies and a terrible movie.
Batman '89 - 2 great movies and a terrible movie.
Blade - 2 great movies and a terrible movie.
X-Men - 2 great movies and a terrible movie.
Spider-Man - 2 great movies and a terrible movie.

All of these franchises were set up for a chance to pull it off and then for whatever reason (THE CURSE), it all fell apart.
