My favorite sequels are T2: Judgement Day, Empire Strikes Back and The Dark Knight and Batman Returns of course. Between Empire and Dark Knight, I can't really say what my favorite one is.


It's interesting though, all 4 of those movies have similar cinematography where everything feels "cooler" with a clean, high contrast blue filter. T2 has it, Dark Knight has it, Returns has it, and Empire has it, especially in snow scenes. Something about the second movie in a series I guess.

Even the posters have that sort of hue to them.

No coincidence here my friend. It's almost like it's a formula t: Sadly this alignment which seemingly produces classics doesn't come around until the universe sees fit.

The cinematography of Rises (camera work and color scheme) instantly set off red flags in my head (not saying it was bad but for the type of story told as well as for action purposes it didn't sit well for me from the get go) that I might not like this movie because it didn't instantly draw me in. Needless to say I ended up not liking it. Now I'm not saying that a good film is dependent on cinematography alone but film is a visual medium and if you are unable to match the intensity of a story with the necessary visuals then overall quality of the film is lost or reduced (IMO). I'll give one example of such a case which also deals with sound design. The scene in the TDK (not a perfect movie but many parts were visually and dramatically pleasing at the right moment) where Joker crashes the party. Look at the camera work, lighting, color scheme and the lone buzzing building sound highlighting tension build up. For me the only thing that came close to that scene in Rises was the first fight between Batman and Bane. The use of no sound was perfect but where the scene failed was sustaining visually pleasing moments that embodied the current weight of what was unfolding at present in the story. The only moment of pleasing camera placement, sound design and dramatic buildup and pay off was the sequence of Bane climbing the stairs towards a defeated looking Batman and unleashing a counter five hit combo. That short little 5 seconds of footage outdid everything in that scene including the back-break because it was visually matched by what we have just witnessed as a major point in the fight and story where Batman knows that he is at Bane's mercy. I'm not basing my dislike for Rises on this alone but this is just a contributing factor on my list. Might not bother anyone else and that's fine but remember it's just my opinion t:

The blue filter they gave Chicago in TDK made Gotham look more like Toronto. That's one of my biggest critiques of TDK aesthetically-speaking.

Couldn't disagree more. The cinematography and lighting was perfect in Rises.

I have to admit that, although I'm not fond of Rises, I loved the bleak despair feeling I got from Gotham during the No Man's Land stuff. One of my favorite scenes in the film is when those guys that get dropped into Gotham get caught by Bane and then get hanged off the Gotham Bridge. It creates a very bleak atmosphere for Gotham. It is "beautifully depressing", if that makes any sense.

If only more of the narrative was clearer during the No Man's Land parts of the film. I wish we would have spent more time with Gotham during that period.

Even though rises is my favorite Batman Film (Not the best), cause I feel it's a great character piece for Bruce, that is my main complain. Imagine 30 minutes more with Anarchy and military law in Gotham...

Pretty much completely unrelated but...thoughts on "Gotham"? Since it's going to be a police drama, will they go for a 'Nolanized' style?

I'm cautiously optimistic. Very cautiously optimistic. I love the idea of a Gotham Central show (that's essentially what it will be) with Gordon as the protagonist. Gordon is a character that deserves it IMO. However, the fact that they announced this on the same day Agents of SHIELD came out gives me the vibe that they're just doing this to mimic Marvel and milk a franchise. That doesn't mean that the show will turn out bad, but it at great risk of ending up as just a generic mediocre crime drama.

Also, Bryan Cranston just finished Breaking Bad. Just saying.

Yeah, I pretty much agree. Here's hoping it's good though. It'd be a real treat to have a good live-action Batman-related show to watch. Haha, man though...Cranston would make this thing an instant smash hit, but I don't see it happening, and they're probably gonna go younger with the role anyway.

I can't see it happening either. Plus Cranston said he's interested in playing a DC villain like Lex Luthor so if he does get cast for a CB role, it will probably be that of a bad guy.

It's a bit of a letdown. Cranston would be such an excellent Gordon. I started watching Breaking Bad a few weeks back and for the first few episodes, I literally felt like I was watching Gordon on the screen. I actually had to remind myself at least once that he wasn't Gordon but Walter White. I didn't feel that as much as the show progressed due to him becoming more and more Heisenberg, but I thought he was the pitch-perfect Gordon for at least Season 1. At least he got to voice Gordon in Year One.

Then again, no one could have predicted Ben Affleck to be cast as Batman. Affleck even said he refused to ever put on a superhero suit ever again before being cast.

I mean, if Fox was really serious about making this huge, they'd throw some serious money at Cranston and hope that he's looking for a more wholesome role after Walter White to help cleanse his soul .

Thing is though, if Cranston was going to play Gordon on TV, this would almost have to tie into the future movies because everyone would want it, and WB has a a history of keeping their DC TV and film projects separate.

But man, come to think of it...Affleck could very well be directing the next solo Batman franchise and he's worked with Cranston before. I won't say it's an impossibility, but it still just seems like fate is working against Cranston actually playing the role in live action for some reason.

Didn't they say it's going to be a young Gordon when he's detective, before Bruce even becomes Batman? So it cant be Cranston or anyone like that.
