The Xbox One - Part 6

ah. ok.

well, I think MS could risk losing X1 sales this Holiday if they don't release a standalone 1 TB console.

if nothing for the simple fact that potential consumers, who are thinking about getting an X1, but who don't care for a CoD edition one, may simply hold off purchasing a 500 GB console if they expect a 1 TB version coming soon.

especially since the X1, unlike the PS4, isn't upgradeable hdd wise.

So, either MS reverses course and offers customers some kind of solution to upgrade the 500 GB model, or they release a standalone 1 TB model.

That probably wasn't the wisest business move. But would it take Microsoft long to introduce a 1 TB Xbox One? I assume they just put in a 1 TB drive instead of a 500 GB drive.

It'll probably take longer to manufacture the boxes the Xbones come in.

Still, most people probably think 500 GB is plenty. Until they start actually installing games. I know I did until recently.

That and the fact MS offers external HDD storage. The avg person would much rather plug in an external HDD than open up their system and risk breaking something, all to swap out a HDD.

yeah. especially during the Holidays, when you want as many people to buy your console as possible. The CoD edition is designed purely for fans of the game. Thus, its potential to appeal to a wider audience is somewhat limited. It's $100 more ( back to the Kinect bundle price ) and the design factor is too specific. You're either going to like it or hate it. A non CoD fan is probably not going to want a console and controller design that looks like that.

Ironically, if the CoD edition had just included a standard black console and controller, plus the game, I'd actually be open to getting it, even though I don't have interest in the game. I'd get it just for the bigger hdd and look at the game as a bonus......lol.

That's why I think a $450 standalone black 1TB model would be the sweet spot to offer.

Of course, if they offered a solution to upgrade the 500 GB, I'd just get that version. Because I know I have the option to upgrade the hdd should the need arise.

so, yeah, making the hdd nonupgradeable was probably not the wisest business decision.

but, they've reversed course on pretty much everything else......lol.

They offer external storage, which to the avg consumer is the far more attractive option.

that may be true, but why not offer both solutions?

why not make it easy to swap out the hdd ( which it sounds like it is fairly easy to do with the PS4 ) and offer external storage support?

then you can cater to both groups of consumers - those who are more tech savvy and comfortable swapping the drive and those who'd prefer to simply plug in an external drive.

And that's also why if a standalone 1 TB model is offered, I'd wait to get that. because then I'd have plenty of internal storage plus the option to hook up 2 external drives if I ever need it.

the best of both worlds. :woot:

but see.....that ties into the point I made above.

consumers, like me, who are strongly considering getting an X1 this Holiday may simply decide to hold off and wait for a standalone model with a bigger hdd. and if there are enough such consumers, that could actually hurt the Holiday sales of the X1. much like I'm sure announcing the cheaper Kinectless bundle probably hurt sales a bit as consumers simply waited for that version to come out.

Yea it could, I just don't think theres enough of you out there to matter. There aren't that many consumers(who are in the market) who will pass up an X1 because they rather be able to open up their console, rather than quickly and easily plug in an external HDD.

I mean i agree, I don't know why MS doesnt make it easier for you to swap out an internal HDD, even if its not a feature requested by a large portion of their audience. Never really understood it. But, in their defense, they offer a much easier solution to that particular issue.

and I don't disagree with you that hooking up an external drive is easier and less hassle.

and aren't external drives cheaper or more cost effective than internal drives?

the trade off, though, is that it means more wires sticking out of your machine.

so.......we'll see what MS does in the coming months.........

speaking of external storage, just curious......

but can you save all of your profile, gamertag, personal info, etc. on the external drive instead of the internal hdd?

or is all of your profile data, along with the system OS/UI, stored on the internal drive?

Thats a VERY lopsided trade off considering there are USB ports on the rear of the console and the console is so damn big, the chances of you seeing ANY wires coming from the rear of it are slim.

true. I guess that's another advantage of having rear USB ports.......lol.

Im not sure, im assuming all the OS stuff is stored on the internal HDD as well as in Microsofts cloud. So like if you take your external HDD over to a buddies, you can still pull up all your information as well as the games you have installed through your HDD

ah, thanks.

I ask this because I was thinking that might be another advantage to using external storage.

see, with my PS3 and 360, I'm sure at some point in the future I will want to sell/trade them in.

However, unlike past consoles that I've owned, the PS3 and 360 both have hdds. which have my profile data and other personal info on them ( as well as game data/saves ).

I know that you can reformat and wipe the hdds clean. but still, I guess I'm concerned that there's always the chance that my data and info could be obtained by a future owner.

but, if all that stuff was stored on an external drive, instead of the internal hdd, then when the time comes to sell the system, it would be easier and more secure ( less worry ), since my personal data would be on the external drive instead of the internal one.

so, that's why I was inquiring. I'll google this question later and see what I can find about it.

That's the thing right there. I would probably have gotten it too.

Right no I think I'll get the Sunset Overdrive bundle. True 500 GB isn't a whole lot. But honestly, looking at my 360 collection, I often get a game, beat it, and then not play it again, for so long.

With some games I will uninstall them when complete and probably sell them.

so, with the CoD 1 TB bundle coming out early Nov, do you think there's a chance by XMAS time that they will release a stand alone 1 TB console?

or, would that be too soon?

Most likely, we would've already heard about that if it were the case.

that doesn't really tell me why the xbone hasn't been released in said territories. whatever regulation the xbone will have the go through the Ps4 is already going through, so why wait?

You want to focus on the regions that are most important to you first. A territory like Japan, for instance, is one in which the Xbox brand has always flopped and the home console market is pretty much dying isn't one that you want to put a huge amount of effort into. At some point, you want to have that worldwide base, but you want to get to the markets you know you have the strongest chances in first and get established, and for MS, that's primarily Europe and North American.

sony is the one risking losing sales, seeing as how the halo collection is coming out and there's nothing AAA coming out on ps4 to compete with it.

that's 1 market, and for your information, xbones preorders are actually pretty high and even selling out from what i've heard

but the Ps4 is out in more than twice the amount of territories than xbone. i understand releasing your console in higher priority areas first but it's been like half a year, and the Ps4 is out in way more territories, why prolong the release for the xbone?

In Japan? Well, you've heard either wrong or the amount to stock they'll be getting is very low, because the Xbox brand as been DOA there since the original. And, like I said, home consoles are on life support. The PS4 had a soft launch and is behind the Wii U there, and the Wii U isn't doing well, either.

And I'm aware it's one market. I said for instance because I used it as an example.

You seem to not really understand the underlying point that it takes time and effort to launch a system. It's more than just shipping a bunch of consoles to a region and saying, "There you go guys, have fun!" You have to have localization, deals with retailers, deal with regional taxes, customs, laws, etc.

It's just a case of MS focusing on their primary markets right now. They know were their userbase is, and they want to get a strong a foothold there as possible especially since they have such direct competition in those regions as of now. They'll get to other regions, but they know they aren't going to be nearly as important or worth the amount of effort they are putting into Europe and North American.

What's the reason(s) for consoles dying out in Japan? Used to be a huge market. :csad:

Yeah the Xbox brand has always been worthless over there, even the 360 at its peak did nothing.

I know Xbox is DOA in Japan but if you remember, there was a streak of weeks where the 360 was outselling Ps3 in Japan, and now we have this.

looks like things are changing.

well yeah obviously. I am not a student of industrial organization, but whatever processes microsoft needs to go through to launch the xbone in unreleased regions, sony has already done so with the Ps4. my question is then why isn't microsoft up to speed?

and I completely understand microsoft knows where their strongest foundations for continuing a fanbase is. but when you watch fanboys argue, sony's will say how Ps4 is more than double the sales of xbone at 10 million, while microsoft's will say that xbone is at half the sales at less than half the amount of regions released, so it is not saying much at all that Ps4 is in the lead

I don't know enough about it to say. It may just be a simple case of tastes and preferences changing, though there may also be some more other more technical reasons.

Well, I've got nothing else. It seems more than a reasonable explanation to me, but if you don't think so, I really don't have anything else.
