Yet oddly in Japan, of all places, they cost the same. Though blu-rays, Jesus Christ, blu-ray prices in Japan are insane.

how much do blu-rays cost in Japan?

speaking of blu-rays, how's the X1 when it comes to playing blu-rays? is the quality good?

does it also upconvert regular dvds?

anyone use remote accessory?

So, I remember Xbox One installs being a big topic at one point in here. MGSV installed for me super fast, but it was apparently a pretty small install compared to most. Got another game on disc today: The Evil Within. It's installing now, almost finished. I'd say it only took about 15 minutes.

Wow nice. Now thats installing from a disc right? Not downloading it from the web? I have noticed that my downloads have gone a bit quicker. Not sure if its my net or if they've just been able to better optimize the system, but my most recent downloads didnt seem to take too long.

Obscenely. As much as six times more expensive than here in America.

Don't know about upscaling, but I heard it was a good, if not particularly great drive.

I'm kind of curious how it is with DVD's.

Looks like any other Blu Ray to me.

Not sure about the up converting, but I watched a DVD the other night and it looked fine.

I haven't as theres no need for it if ya have the smart glass on your phone/tablet.

yeah. it does seem like the installs/downloads are faster now from what I've been hearing.

and that's good. cuz that was one of my main concerns when I chickened out and returned mine.

it would be great if they could reduce the time to PS4 levels of just a few minutes.

but 10-15 minutes is reasonable.

ah. thanks.

I'd imagine since it is a Blu-ray player it will also upconvert regular dvds, right?

I believe so. I have heard that some people in Europe have had issues, due to the Xbox and PAL not getting along.

6 times??!! meowch!!

ah. ok.

still can't believe almost a year later the PS4 still doesn't have an official Bluetooth remote. I mean.....extra accessory = more $$$, right??

It is odd.

But the PS4 was an overall downgrade as a multimedia player.

My tech savvy friend went on a whole diatribe about how the blu-ray player is inferior to the PS3. Deinterlacing, resolution, etc.

Also, apparently the DVD drive is rather noisy. So that wasn't just my machine being temperamental. It's just a crappy drive.

Though the XBone's drive media playback has some issues too from what I recall.

There have been some issues with the software.

The PS3 is just a wonderful machine though.

Also, I have read thate that the Bone can't play BD-R, while the PS4 does. Which is... odd.

But now that it's the official pirate machine, maybe that's changed.

what's BD-R?

and yeah......the PS4 is a step back in terms of being a multimedia player.

I want one machine that can multi-task and do everything. which I guess is why I'm still being called to the X1.

I'm just pissed at Sony.

A BD-R is like a DVD-R. Recordable Blu-ray. Most people have never heard of them, since well, like most Blu-ray technologies, Blu-ray burners never really took off. But they do exist, and you can burn movies (and other stuff) onto Blu-rays.

Some of the tech experts were actually baffled that Microsoft included DRM to block them, since... who the hell burns pirated material onto a Blu-ray in the first place?

For that kind of money you can buy the real thing.

yeah.......excluding that doesn't seem like a big deal.

It's just one of those stupid things Microsoft did.

Hell, they'd probably take it out if you promised to buy an Xbone.

What does annoy me however is a lack of CD support.

An yes. I still listen to CDs.

eh??

I thought the X1 DID support audio CDs?? unlike the PS4.

and I still listen to CDs, too. :highfive:

It wouldn't need it if the PS4 remote app would work like the Smart Glass app. Iv tried a few times and the PS4 app wont control blu rays. I can scroll through the dashboard fine, but as soon as i boot up the blu ray, support stops.

it almost feels like everything else besides the gaming is more of an afterthought on the PS4.

and you'd think they'd allow any Bluetooth remote ( including the PS3 remote ) to work with the PS4. the only real reason for not allowing the PS3 remote to work would be if they wanted to push a newer PS4 remote.

except.........that doesn't exist.

With the X1 at least, there's a better general feeling that they are listening to customer feedback and adding new features on a frequent basis.

Sony..........well.........."soon."

It's funny. Microsoft cared about everything but gaming, and Sony only focused on gaming.

I think Sony went into this with a focus on gaming, but Microsoft's terrible launch press probably helped them continue to focus on that.

I hope Sony continues to delay new features, so Microsoft will keep adding them.

I use a universal remote for my 360 and X1. It works great, except on the YouTube app, but that's the app.

that being said, perhaps you could say that Sony's core focus on gaming led them to build the more "powerful" machine when it comes to gaming.

whereas MS wanted the X1 to be a more all-in-one, multitasking machine - which might have led resources being diverted away from making the console "optimized" for gaming power.

the classic "jack of all trades, master of none" scenario.

Yeah, it's from the disc.

were you able to start playing before it fully installed?

ah. ok.

I looked online and I think it's 40gbs?

And 10-15 minutes for a full install for a 40gb file isn't too bad. it's not as fast as the few minutes on the PS4. but, it's certainly a lot better than the reports of 45 minutes, 90 minutes, or several hours that I read about.

I can live with a 10-15 min average install time.

Well, you can start the game before that, I think. I know it told it was ready to start anyway. Not sure if you can actually jump into the game or what, though, I just wait for it to fully install.

I think as long as it's a campaign, you can start early, but if you bought a game for MP, you have to DL the disc, so you have everything that is needed to play online.

Yeah, it's from the disc.

ah, thanks.

well, that's good to hear. hopefully this 10-15 minute ( for a larger game like this one ) is the average time to install from disc. I can live with that.

I know on the PS4, you can start playing the game in about 2-3 minutes. I believe it's still installing/updating in the background, but I don't know how long that actually takes. I suppose if I did time it, it would probably be around 10-15 minutes, too, to install and update everything.

ah. good to know.

it's similar to the PS4 then. cuz there it usually says you must "download the update before using any network features." so that means any online/MP stuff.

I wonder if, like the PS4, you can really start playing the single player stuff in just 2-3 minutes.

cuz if it's that short on the X1 as well, then that means it would be less of a hassle to just delete/reinstall games your not currently playing in order to free up/manage your hdd space.

if it takes 30, 45, 90 minutes or even several hours or all day ( which I've read some people say ) to install and update the game, then that would be a huge hassle and time consuming task to constantly delete/reinstall games.

It should, cause at around 5%, it says you can start the game. I haven't tried though, I just waited for it to fully install.
