The Xbox One - Part 9

I don't understand how that is going to work with the cross platform play. I remember they tried it with Shadowrun with the 360 and PC, and it didn't really work out. We'll see, I guess....

My xbone decide to scare me today by not reading a couple discs. I did a hard reboot and it worked.

Windows 10 definitely kills any chance of me getting a Steam Box. The integration with the One is great. I've heavily been looking into building a gaming PC but figured I'd wait to see what came out of GDC in March since Valve said Steam machines would be front in center. Any PC I get now is definitely gonna be running Windows 10.

So, you can actually stream games you buy from the Xbox store to anything with the app? That is pretty cool sounding. Not something I personally would use, but still, pretty interesting stuff.

how the heck does that even work with a tablet? With the PS4, when it happens, the DS4 has bluetooth to connection but X1 controller isnt BT.

did they say or show if Windows 10 will bring a new UI to the X1?

There wont be a new UI for the X1 until MS changes all of the UI's for all their devices. They are going for one unified look across all their platforms.

I don't really see how that voids is question. He's asking if that will be the new UI in question.

so, presumably, when Windows 10 is released, then the X1 UI will be changed to reflect the new Windows 10 look, right?

I'd assume that's what will happen, especially if they want one unified look across platforms.

and hopefully, integration of Windows 10 into the X1 will go beyond just looks and actually improve the functionality of the UI as a whole.

Yea thats what id assume, as MS has said in the pas they want to bridge all their devices, from an aesthetics point. I didnt know the UI for Windows was changing tho.

well, from what I've seen of 10, it does seem they are moving away from the "tile centric" format of 8.

that being said, I didn't all that mind the tile format of X1's UI. I'd rather them, say, speed up the install times, than change the UI, if I had to choose priorities of what to fix.

Yea, if one goes, they'll all go to an extent. This "One" title they are labeling everything has a meaning.

Lot of potential in all this, hope they can make it work.

I also like what I'm hearing about X1 to PC streaming.

but, I'm really hoping that will lead to the opposite direction, PC to X1 streaming. or even better, the ability to run PC games on the X1.

just imagine, you want to play a PC only game like Guild Wars 2, but you don't want to play on a PC or you don't have a powerful enough machine. But, if the X1 ever became capable of playing Windows PC games ( since it will be running on Windows 10 ), then that means you could play Guild Wars 2 right from your X1.

Or, you could download The Old Republic and play it on your X1.

if that ever happens, that would open up a whole new library of games that could be played on the X1.

Both options would be a big benefit to me. Really I want pc games linked to my profile and be able to party up and play cross platform with Xbox Live friends or stay in party while playing different games. I've got a good pc but then I could justify getting a top one when I have more time in about 2 years.

Microsoft killing it again. I'm glad that Spencer is the one who is handling almost everything about Xbox/Windows, he knows what we want.

that hologram headset is pretty sick, too.

if that's reasonably priced and they find innovative ways to integrate it with the X1, that's something that would legit get me interested in the X1 again.

this will certainly be an interesting and crucial year for the X1. I'm eager to hear and see what they reveal at the conventions like E3.

While the hologram things looks and sounds cool on paper, I am kind of getting Kinect flashbacks in the sense that a lot of insanely, sci-fi like ideas were presented, but never really panned out. Like that AI thing that was shown in the earlier stages, with the boy responding (allegedly) totally unscripted responses. Kinect is a pretty nifty device, but I don't think a lot of the promises about it really panned out. So, I'll put this as a wait and see what it ends up actually looking like. I'm not sure the practical uses of it, either, really.

Oh boy, here we go again. :hehe:

heh. :o

but there are still plenty of things they have to fix for me to even consider the X1 again. until those things are addressed, I'll just observe from the sidelines. :cwink:

right now, though, it's still not the console for me.

yeah, good point. the demo video of the hologram certainly looked cool, but we'll have to wait and see how well it functions in real performance.

that being said, I do think there are more practical solutions for the hologram headset than Kinect.

Like what?

practical solutions?

well, like they showed in the demo. you could have a professional or technician ( plumber, electrician, etc. ) walk you through fixing something in your house.

or you could create an object or design in the hologram program then send it to a 3d printer to create an actual object. this could be useful for people who may not have the best "drawing skills" but can use their hands in the hologram to design something by molding, dragging and dropping, etc.

in education, this could prove useful for students, like med students or engineer students, get virtual hands on experience in their fields.

in business, this could allow you to better visualize a new project, building, etc. in a meeting.

there are lots of possibilities with the technology. especially if/when you can link what you create or interact with in the hologram to the real world ( like 3d printing ).

I'm not 100% sure I would call those practical exactly, since most of that is kind of high-end stuff outside being walked through fixing something (which kind of sounds like a horrible idea), but actually, yeah, a lot of that good thinking, though.

and of course, it would depend upon how ubiquitous and prevalent the technology becomes.

you know how in futuristic sci fi movies or games, you see people interacting with holograms as part of their everyday lives?

I think this hologram headset could mark the potential first step towards that reality.

if the headset can ever become affordable enough for most people to own, and perhaps shrink to a smaller size ( like Google Glass size ), in 10 - 20 years, we may very well be living in a world where such headsets are as part of our everyday lives ( and how we interact with the world ) as our smartphones are right now.

Out of all recent inroads into immersion tech I'd have to say that the Oculus Rift is the only one that sounds like actual quality based on the reactions I've seen from people.
