Whether or not Batman dies will probably depend primarily on whether these storytellers want Wayne's story to be a tragedy, or if they want him to find peace/happiness.
I think that what it proposes, accentuated by the concept of one last battle, is he'll either 'die in the ring', or leave it all behind once and for all while he still has some health and years left to build a happy life. No in-betweens. I know people hate the overused term...but this is a very 'realistic' outlook on this, one that shows genuine concern for the well-being of someone we would care about. And it's not a knock on Batman or the idea of being a hero forever, etc. It wants Wayne to achieve something, give people an example of hope and righteousness that they'll carry with them long after he's gone.
But the story also feels that he can't just leave like he did in TDK...a fugitive, the scapegoat for Dent's murders, etc. Yeah, the city needed it it, but he's not going to go out a criminal in anyone's mind. So the end will come one way or another. And although a death of Batman could make for a poignant drama, bittersweet and all that....I see these storytellers as wanting Wayne to live, and to end Batman, and have at least some time and health to be happy. I think these storytellers have shown a genuine compassion for Wayne, and admiration...too much so to let him die in the ring if they can help it. Wouldn't any of us feel that way about anyone we cared about, even if we understood their fight?
