The Dark Knight Rises You Have My Permission To Lounge - Part 3

I think Affleck was fine as Batman. Not amazing, but overall pretty good. The big surprise for me was how much I actually enjoyed him as Bruce. He might be my second favorite Bruce behind Bale for me, which I never expected to say. With better writing I think he could be a great overall package.

The one thing I'll say is for people who praise Batfleck but throw Snyder's take on the character under the bus...I think Affleck is just as much to blame, in the sense that I think he's just as much of a hard-on for TDKR/Miller Batman as Snyder does and that's a big part of why he signed onto the project. People talk about how Affleck is such a big Batman fan and such, but just like Snyder I only ever really have ever heard him talk about TDKR when it comes to the comics. Pretty sure Kevin Smith has said that he was really into that book in the 90s, and one of the reasons he did Daredevil was because of Frank Miller's run and because he figured there wouldn't be another Batman movie. Notice also how Affleck said that he wouldn't have wanted to play the role if it was a more "up the middle" take on the character like Bale's.

So while I think Affleck is well cast in the role and I'm looking for to seeing him get to build on his portrayal in future movies, I'm not gonna say he just had the misfortune of having to play Snyder's extreme version of the character. I think that is very much what attracted him to the role in the first place.

A guy who loves Frank Miller + Geoff Johns. Only the devil knows what that brings.

I thought you loved his performance?

I thought his acting was good, but the characterization was terrible. Good acting doesn't hold up a bad characterization. I'd rate his Batman below Val Kilmer's.

Holy hell. Listen to the background. Is that the sound of Cap beating the shell outta Tony for thirty seconds?

Didn't Affleck call TDK Trilogy a definitive take and admit that they're doing a weird version of the character with Snyder? I'm pretty sure he said something like that.

Yes, he did.

Also let's not forget that Affleck wielded a certain amount of power with this project. I'm sure if he wasn't comfortable with the amount of killing Batman was doing he could've gotten it toned down in the script.

I'm not saying let's all blame Affleck, but it's not like he was tricked into playing this version of Batman or anything.

Civil War was amazing. This is how you create credible feuds between heroes. And not just between two heroes, CW managed to create several between different characters, and all of them credible and great.

The third act is described as 'an emotional horror film'. True or hyperbole?

So glad to see what u thought of it. I'm afraid to go in the Civil War thread.

9/10?

Now I need to see Zack Snyder's opinion of the feud movie that is more than flavor of the week/month and can actually be considered art.

It's too quippy bro. It doesn't have the mythological weight and destruction of BvS bro.

True. Without getting spoilery stuff happens you don't see coming that really puts things in overdrive.

Don't worry about going there. The love for this movie seems near universal.

Easily 9/10. Might go up to 10 for me. Have to see it again.

So, Seth Grahame Smith is off The Flash. due to "creative differences." Devin Faraci (yeah, I know, dude's an asshat) says that's the first of many BvS aftershocks and he hears Aquaman is the next aftershock.

WB/DCEU sounds like a mess right now, if Faraci is to be believed.

Director Seth Grahame-Smith has left The Flash. The official explanation: "creative differences."

Sources at WB tell me that this is just one part of what's going on behind the scenes at the DC movieverse. Zack Snyder and Geoff Johns were taken aback at critical and audience reaction to Batman v Superman, I'm told, and WB execs have found themselves at odds with Snyder over his vision for Justice League and the DC movieverse going forward. Of course Justice League was scheduled to start shooting mere days after BvS was released, which meant WB couldn't take any definitive action - like removing Snyder or delaying the movie to make changes - without poisoning the box office for BvS. The result? Lots of fights between Snyder and the WB execs, and lots of pressure from Burbank on Snyder, who is shooting in London.

I'm not sure what the exact nature of the creative differences on The Flash are, but I'm being told that this may not be the only movie impacted by the aftermath of BvS. According to multiple, reliable sources James Wan is feeling a tremendous amount of trepidation about Aquaman. It's important to remember two things - Fast 7 was a very difficult process for him, even without Paul Walker's tragic death, and James Wan doesn't really need Aquaman. With The Conjuring 2 and Lights Out (which he produced), Wan will be owning WB's summer slate, bringing in a lot of money with movies that cost a fraction of Aquaman. Aquaman needs Wan, and right now Wan is trying to decide if he needs that hassle.

It will be interesting to see how things shake out. Wan has the upper hand on Aquaman, so maybe he'll be able to make that work in his favor. I keep hearing that it could be delayed in an attempt to get the film right, but who knows. Justice League is going to be Justice League, no matter how hard the studio rides Snyder. As for the rest of the slate - Suicide Squad, the weird side movie, looks like it's the hail mary pass for the DC Movieverse, at least until guaranteed winner The Batman gets here.

Once again the concept of execution escapes them. It's scarily pervasive among Snyder chasers.

Johns was also surprised at Green Lanterns' reaction. This is not a good thing.
