The Dark Knight Rises You Have My Permission To Lounge - Part 9

I miss the days when Batman and DC was on top of the world in the movies. The movies of the TDK trilogy were done with style and class.

Agreed. The complaints aimed towards TDKR really seem more and more like small potatoes these days compared to what were getting now, at least to me.

Remember how you felt in summer 2005? I have never been more pumped up in a movie theater than the end of Batman Begins.
First time I saw the movie, the order of scenes almost lost me before the lair of the shadows, execution moment is when things got interesting for me on first view. I really enjoyed seeing the Joker calling card in the hand of Jim the first time, it gave me goosebumps.

I had mixed feelings, kind of like ''will they follow through on this Joker card?'' but oh man... they absolutely did.

Rises, and TDKT as a whole, is only aging better in my mind. Of course there are flaws, but those three films were made with such integrity and ambition that they still resonate and will continue to for years to come. There have been superhero films since that I hold in similarly high regard (Logan being the highest), but as a whole the trilogy's still the high water mark of the genre. It's upsetting that WB shat the bed so quickly and we're seemingly back to the Schumacher-era doldrums, but I'll always be grateful for what they did with Nolan. I just wish they hadn't learned all the wrong lessons from it.

Loving that sequel helped me appreciate BB even more. I love it when a great sequel helps me appreciate what I saw earlier.

"Take this guy. Armed robbery, double homicide, got a taste for the theatrical like you. Leaves a calling card".

One of my biggest fanboy geek out moments watching a CBM.

Exactly how I feel man.

Well, a least it's nice to be able to hang with some likeminded folk and cope together lol. It's just frustrating because I think many of us saw this coming a mile away the minute they announced Snyder was directing BvS and Justice League films. It didn't have to be this way.

They really just should've waited longer to reboot Batman and focused on Superman and Wonder Woman, and maybe Flash/Aquaman. Wonder Woman succeeded mostly in SPITE of BvS, not because of it. We could be on a much different track now if they have just waited on Batman, and made the necessary course corrections for Superman with a proper sequel.

You'll never be able to convince me that they shouldn't have waited longer to reintroduce Batman.

The official op weekend number is 94 million.

That is catastrophically bad. That is less than Iron Man made in 2008.

They have to reboot. In a way that keeps Gadot and Momoa (but separate from each other). And Reeves' Batman basically has to be a stand alone now.

Scrap the whole thing. Start fresh. Fire people in charge of making decisions. Bring Alan Horn back. It's that simple.

Haven't seen Justice League in the cinema and don't know if I will, but glad to hear Cavill FINALLY got to play some semblance of the classic and charming Superman I always knew he could play successfully. Hopefully we get to see that true MoS sequel now as well.

The whole move with BvS instead of a true MoS sequel, rushing Batman's introduction and dumping Wonder Woman into the mix for good measure always felt like a desperate and pretty transparent attempt to try and catch up to Marvel as quickly as possible. Shame.

The Dark Knight is still the best in-theater viewing experience I've ever had. I don't think any film will ever top that, for me.

On paper, it felt like this was a charming classic Superman. But i just didn't feel it because of Cavill's acting and how they created those scenes. Also, it didn't feel earned to me. That's a huge part of it. He's mopey and has no character development in Man of Steel, even though there's these little glimpses early in the film of Clark's good nature. BvS had them double down on the mopey, angry Supes. Didn't help that Cavill was extra wooden. They kill him off way too early and you don't feel much because his character barely developed and they executed that scene in the worst, dumbest way imaginable.

Now he's in the suit in the final 10 minutes of Justice League, and he seems to be doing all the right things that the people want from any version of Superman, right? But it's NOT earned.
His resurrection is handled poorly, again. And his resurrection barely makes sense, just like Zod's "resurrection" into Doomsday. Then he's gone for chunks of time, until those final 10 minutes like i was talking about. Why is he so happy during the final fight? Why is he acting like classic Superman? There's not really a reason behind his shift in personality, other than "the people want him to be classic Supes, so that's what we'll give him".

100% agreed Shauner. Everything about Superman was weird in this film frankly.

I definitely agree shauner. I even said that too in my little review, it was unearned. If I view those moments in a vacuum, it just makes me feel like- imagine he could do in solo movie with better direction and writing. Seeing Superman actually LAUGH and crack a few jokes, I can't lie I enjoyed that. But it's just kind of random that he's a totally different guy out of nowhere. The movie could've done something, ANYTHING to show he has a new lease on life now that's back from the dead...anything to give him a journey. This was supposed to be the whole culmination of his journey, and why we were meant to believe he had to be so sad and then die in the first 2 movies. He was "growing" into the classic Superman. Yeah, so much for that. "Unearned" is pretty much how I would describe the tone of the entire movie.

And yeah, I agree- there are definitely moments in MoS that show his good nature. I caught some of it on FX yesterday and I appreciated those bits. They really doubled down on the wrong things in BvS.

It's absolutely unearned, and given that awful phone footage scene, it's also a retcon of his personality from the first two. HOWEVER--

He was great at portraying this version of him aka the proper version. And I was so glad to see it finally happen (and getting rid of the trash heap version from BvS) that I'm just wilfully ignoring the surrounding context.

I dug him so much I'm considering seeing this nonsense in the cinemas again. That's how thirsty I am for good Superman on film. It's been four years and three movies... I have to savour the five minutes of good **** we got from that. :funny: :(

Yeah I enjoyed those Superman scenes, earned or unearned.

I'm so crushed after BvS, bothered by seeing the mediocrity of MoS, and indifferent toward the nonsense of Suicide Squad that I don't even care to try and get the bootleg version of Justice League.

Still haven't tried Wonder Woman past the first 40 minutes.

I tried my best to enjoy Wonder Woman, but just couldn't.

The hype on that movie still bugs me... I hope eventually when we get more female led superhero movies, people look back on it in a different light.

I like Wonder Woman. It's not fantastic, but i do like the movie. My problems are with the abuse of slow-motion, the villains are quite awful, and the third act is just a cleaner version of the BvS & MOS endings (CGI/Monster bash). It's definitely overhyped. BUT they got the character so right. The tone is on point. The score does its job. The acting from some of the main players like Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright and Connie Nielson is solid. Steve Trevor and Diana Prince actually have great chemistry, unlike Clark Kent and Lois Lane in the DCEU. Diana has a strong arc. We see character development. There is warmth, some of the humor lands, some doesn't. And besides the slow-mo, a lot of the action is quite good.

So i do believe Patty Jenkins can create a better sequel, now that the formulaic origin story is out of the way and she has even more control and confidence. Hopefully we get a better villain, and some more imagination all around. Turn this into a trilogy.

Since most of the CGI is so bad in Justice League, makes you wonder how it will fair when time comes for the Blu-ray/4K release.

Will WB cough up even more to fix it?

I doubt it, they already spend excessive amounts just for the reshoots.
