The Dark Knight Rises You Have My Permission To Lounge - Part 9

OK so where do i start?

This was soooo rushed. Especially in the second half. Zero breathing room. At least the first half felt like the pacing wasn't THAT quick, even when they were jumping from location to location.

Holy ****, i think i'm just about done with Henry Cavill in this role. He really doesn't have anything good to do or say but jesus christ this boy can't act in this role. I've been hearing good things about him in this movie and Fisher as Cyborg, but both were as wooden as Ben Affleck.
Superman,
and i mean "Superman" in the suit, is only present for THE LAST 10 MINUTES of this movie. His face was soooo distracting, right from the get-go, OMG OMG is what i kept whispering to myself. SuperFace is the worst, and it's going to become the biggest joke of the DCEU, even more than MARTHA once the blu-ray comes out.

Amy Adams and Diane Lane have nothing to do. Their dialogue was ATROCIOUS to the point where it made them look like soap opera actors. You guys know how i feel about Amy in these movies, that she always looks like she's self-aware or something? Well, the first scene she's in, it really looks like she's embarrassed to be there
her scene with Martha.

I liked Momoa in the role of Aquaman and Amber Heard was fine in her little cameo. Those underwater scenes weren't so bad. Ezra Miller is a good pick as Flash and he didn't annoy me like i thought. I did laugh at some of his lines/antics. Not everything landed. It's sad that NONE of these characters had any character development. Speaking of character, everytime they were about to go somewhere as a team, it really felt like a few chunks were taken out so they can get to that fight/location as fast as they could. More character interactions were definitely left on the cutting room floor.

Ben Affleck is the worst Batman next to George Clooney. No b.s. He had only a couple of decent Wayne scenes, like
the argument with Diana, which i liked as a whole.
But jesus christ, he is downright awful in the cowl. Bad one liners aside, his delivery, the way he walks, that's just Ben Affleck in a Batsuit. There is a shot at the very end where you see
Batman standing next to Aquaman, and Bats is smiling. The combination of that new suit and that smile just made me think of Clooney's goofy expressions. I can't believe we've gone this route after what Bale/Nolan did. However, it made me sad when Clark/Bruce are talking at the end, for the first time. Bruce pats Clark on the back, they're smiling. I felt like wow, that's the last time we see Ben in this role (or was there one more with Diana/Alfred at Wayne Manor?

Batman is an idiot in this movie. I counted TWICE where Batman's identity is let out to the public. First time in the beginning of this movie, in a scene that i actually liked that kinda reminded me of BTAS. The
pre-opening credits on the rooftop with the robber. First of all, Bats is using this guy as bait for the parademon correct? Not only does he leave him there after (which is not a Batman thing to do). But right in front of a civilian he calls Alfred and says "Alfred..". Are you serious? The other guy doesn't react either. The next time was when Bruce meets Arthur. Bruce, standing on a hill with like 30 people surrounding him and not only does Aquaman call him BATMAN right in front of them, but then the name Bruce Wayne pops up in conversation. I know these people probably don't care who he is, but jesus christ that's just lazy writing and direction.
He is made to look like an A-hole numerous times, and Cyborg flat out calls him that at one point. As a fan, i'm going "Yup." He's not very likeable. He's the least likeable character in the League, which makes it worse for Ben when he's in scenes with Gal Gadot.

Gal is born for this role. Diana was fun and showed true leadership. She made sections of this movie watchable, along with Flash. Sure Momoa is charismatic but he has nothing to do. Boy, those one-liners are bad too..

Speaking of nothing to do. J.K Simmons is J.J.Jameson without the over the top laughter. If they bring him back, cool. If they recast, cool. Jeremy Irons is bored out of his mind. He's not a character. He's a device in these movies for whenever Batman needs somebody to control a vehicle or to throw out one quick remark while staring at bruce as he mopes around the interior of some fancy room.

Steppenwolf is an abomination. Nothing new, looks like s**t, the main concept of why he's there is simple but at the same time makes no sense. We saw this in Man of Steel, Avengers, etc. The parademons are a waste of money. And the russian family that they antagonize was one of the more random things about this frankenstein of a flick.

The stuff about resurrecting Supes flew over my head, either i was bored or it didn't add up to me. The score did nothing to enhance Superman's return. Did i look away for a second? Because i don't remember
how Clark ended up waking up shirtless. That's the one scene that made me think this team (Cyborg, Wondy, Flash, Aquaman, minus batman who was hiding from Mustache Man) can build on a team chemistry.
But the scene itself is so ******ed and laughable. Just an excuse for A)
Flash to do a PET CEMETARY callback B) To give us another Superman vs Batman showdown where Supes can do a callback to DO YOU BLEED?
and C) so Lois has something to do.

In conclusion...it's not a better film than BvS or worse. It has the odd fun or funny moment. The team has potential. If they get can rid of Affleck who helps turn Batman into a boring joke, they may have a better group. CGI is bad, although the Flash stuff was fine. The team is not so electrifying that it screams for a sequel with a different plot. Bad writing. Bad directing. Bad editing. Lack of character development. No story, just an excuse to give people some fun while they try not to choke on popcorn. It's predictable, and it reeks of "we don't know what to do with these heroes, just try your best to mimmick the Avengers?" The final montage was good, and what a shame that it was tacked onto the end of a mess.

Good lord i still love Nolan. That video gave me a massive high. I can't wait to own Dunkirk and i really miss the days of the trilogy.

How pissed is WB? In a pretty short period of time, they managed to take Batman right back into the gutter after Nolan created so much credibility with the public. Meanwhile he just keeps on doing his own thing and might just win Best Director this year. At least they are getting the profits and critical acclaim on Dunkirk even if their DCU is in shambles.

It just didn't feel very Batman-like to me. The DCAU/Conroy Bats used humour at times in Justice League/JLU, but it was always incredibly dry and sardonic. He was never used to hit a beat... I half expected them to put in a laugh track at that point.

Plus, Cavill's delivery was just terrible.

Also, I wasn't all that impressed with the Bat-suit/cowl at times. It was far TOO bulky.
Basically my biggest issue with Affleck. He just isn't able to deliver some of Whedon's quips the right way. But also, some of the quips were downright terrible. They were Stark-lite humor. That Nolan compilation reminded me of how good Nolan was at giving Bale's Bruce sly things to say.

Irons can deliver the quips right though, to be frank.

Honestly, it makes me sad/angry. It feels like all the great work that went into restoring Batman's cinematic reputation and taking it to unseen heights has been squandered so quickly.

If the opening weekend numbers are any indication, we've officially entered Batman & Robin territory in terms of brand damage.

I guess in a sense all of this does tee Matt Reeves up to be the next franchise savior ala Nolan. Maybe the character is destined to go in these cycles :funny:. But it's frustrating. Because to me it's not only brand damage in terms of quality, it's also in terms of oversaturation. It's quite a lot to overcome.

The main reason I'm sort of "happy" this movie is bombing is that so many of these geek vloggers/reviewers who are going so easy on this movie and acting as if it puts DC on the "right track" need to realize that "ok" or "passable" is not enough, fan-service is not enough, and we have to stop accepting crap if we want to see any real improvement. I'm a hypocrite because curiosity got the best of me and I went out to see it opening weekend, but I applaud everyone who said "You know what? Fool me once..." and stayed home this time.

Thanks for your...Insightful observations, shauner. Especially the stuff in spoiler tags. Sounds ridiculous. It seems like I will enjoy JL in "that way"...You know, that kind of bad movie that is entertaining in unintended ways.

I think that as long as Bats is with WB (Forever) we will be seeing these highs and lows. I mean, this stuff has been going since the 80's where we almost got a Batman film as a comedy.

As for Irons...Well he was the first one to publicly admit that BvS was kind of awful so no surprise that he would be in paycheck mode for the sequel.

I know people always complain about over-saturation with the Batman character, but recently I'm starting to believe it's a little true. SEVEN theatrically released films in well under TWO years (Even if two were 1 day 'events''):

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (March 2016)
Batman: The Killing Joke (July 2016)
Suicide Squad (August 2016)
Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders (October 2016)
The Lego Batman Movie (February 2017)
Batman and Harley Quinn (August 2017)
Justice League (November 2017)

I saw it last night. Very unremarkable, forgettable and some of the worst CGI I've seen for a big budget superhero movie.

I did like Ezra as Barry/Flash though.

What the hell was that performance by Ben Affleck? It was just as I feared. Too much like I feared. He was just playing himself. The scene where he and Diana insult each other? I didn't detect a hint of Bruce. It was just Ben Affleck.

Gal Gadot completely outmatched him. She is wonder woman. There is not ever a second where she stops embodying the role.

I would compare it to Clooney in B and R. Both performances have the actors going through the motions with a pair of eyes constantly looking at the exit door.

He showed exactly why i didn't want him for the character in the first place. He has the tendency to do that and I didn't want a performer like that in the Batsuit, especially after seeing someone as dedicated as Bale.

Lol, wow. And people call me crazy for wanting Bale to have returned to the role for the DCEU. I can't wait to see this Tuesday night.

Yup. Clooney flashbacks for sure. Both were attempts to lighten the character too.

And even so...Clooney's one good scene with Alfred probably has more emotional weight than anything Affleck does in JL (which is as much a problem with the writing). Not even exaggerating there.

The first half of JL. Holy balls. It was a tire fire. Everything we feared would sink a film like the Avengers before it came out occurred here. The team didn't have a cohesive narrative to build on. Each of their character threads were disparate. It was like we were watching five different movies. Except it was in one movie and they had to truncate every one of those threads. Making them feel hollow. The first half of Justice League just gained me a whole new appreciation for the first act of the Avengers.

There's a scene between Martha and Lois in her office that is so disconnected to everything else that was going on they could've put it anywhere else really. They could've put that scene at the beginning or much later. It would've made no difference. Talk about disjointed.

But the movie actually becomes somewhat fun in the second half. The character interactions are good. The actors are good and bounce off of each other well (except Affleck, he sucked).

Steppenwolfe's generic design is only out-genericed by its generic voice.

The best part was Cavil. Man, he was so, so good. This is the superman I wanted and Cavil played him to perfection. Damn you Zack Snyder for directing Cavil to be a mopey stiff for two films. You completely wasted him. He has it, man. He could've stood shoulder to shoulder with Reeve if he hadn't been screwed. What a tragedy. The lip was only jarring in the beginning. It didn't bother me after that.

There is a shot of the trinity in this film that, along with the banter, is utterly heart sinking. Because you realize what we could've had if these films were at better hands.

It's a bad film. No better than BvS. But it doesn't butcher the characters. There is a sense of fun. And there isn't an overwhelming sense of "this is important" choking the life out things. So it's more bearable. That's my take.

I actually found more moments of decent acting with Clooney than I did with Batfleck. Particularly in the scenes with Gough's Alfred.

Clooney's scenes with Gough are beautiful and where he shines the most. I also quite liked his ending monologue to Mr Freeze.

Agree with others that feel Affleck was just looking for the door with this performance. The extensive reshoots probably didn't help.

What did you think of JL Joker? Better than BvS or no?

Marginally. Thanks to Gadot mainly. Overall the movie was a hot mess sprinkled with some good moments. I think they wasted J.K. Simmons as Gordon, too. He left no impression on me. The story was wafer thin. The CGI was horrendous. The villain was awful, right down there with Eisen Lex and Letoker. Affleck was phoning it in.

Oh yeah, Gadot is incredible. You know the first scene she appears at? Where she is standing over the statue? My first thought was 'damn, that's a superhero'. She has the same radiating presence as Christopher Reeve.

Simmons was a nonentity. It was like he was trying to be as bland as possible.

I gotta agree with this and disagree with shauner that he was bad. Particularly in the third act, which is clearly reshoots, I do think were finally able to see what his fully formed Superman is, even with the distracting CG lip and all.

Now, in context- I think that characterization and some of the jokiness of it may have felt a little tacky and unearned. It's so incongruent with the Superman we saw in the previous to films, and even earlier in JL to this new, happier guy. Ideally he should be more like that under normal circumstances and a bit more serious when it's apocalyptic-level stakes. But, just taken on its own, I agree- it shows that with the right direction, Cavill can shine in the role. Maybe not quite on Reeve tier for me, but him with the charm turned up combined with the impressive physique certainly makes for a "wow, that's really Superman brought to life" feeling. For me, anyway. Sadly, with JL looking to be an actual box office bomb, I'm not so sure we get a Superman sequel anytime soon.

Also, while I did like the brighter colors on Supes suit, the "brightening" of the movie really negatively impacted Batman. It just looks like a clunky rubber suit. That's not the type of decision that's ideal to make midway through. Those suits are designed and lighted a certain way, for a certain color grading.

I really hope Cavill gets another chance. He has it in him to nail this with the right script/director.

Much as I'd like to be in disbelief about this, the DCEU track record so far leaves no room for me to deny this being a fact.

Other than the first scene, Batman was completely embarrassing in this movie. Even in that scene, [BLACKOUT]he casually calls out to Alfred out loud while the crook is right beside him. [/BLACKOUT]

As well as his first encounter with Arthur Carry. [BLACKOUT]He had absolutely no concern about safeguarding his identity while they openly talked about it. I guess he was counting on the people to not know English?[/BLACKOUT] Very Batman thing to do. :o
