Good point Snow Queen. I didnt think of that. It has to be for the casual viewers. But why Pepper? Haha, dammmn.

Seems like a lot of people agree with us (from what im reading around the net) that Barbara sucks and so does Alfred. I wouldn't say Ben McKenzie was great, but solid. I think he'll really grow on everybody and could become much better. There's definitely something there.

Maybe so it's the same initials, only backwards? IP instead of PI? Plus pepper being grown from plants, perhaps.

Pamela Ivy would have been better in that case. Or Ivy Isley. The name is a minor issue though, i just don't think she needed to be there. Will she be there for more than a couple of episodes? Did her father have to be killed and setup? The little fan service stuff like that was stupid. Especially since she's just a little kid.

After thinking about it a bit, i have a few more negatives..

How Oswald gets the nickname Penguin: This was forced. It would have made sense after the limp. He doesn't resemble a Penguin in any way before that confrontation with Fish Mooney.

The other complaint is that this show fails to do something that i think is very important when you're doing an origin. I should be able to look at the characters of Alfred, Bruce Wayne, etc...and see what they would be like in 20, 30 years time once Bruce becomes Batman in that world. And i just don't see it. Bullock is going to be 70 or retired when Bruce puts on the cape and cowl?? Will he, Montoya and Allen even be a part of the GCPD when this goes down eventually?

This Selina Kyle is older than Bruce and i personally find that weird. Every major villain is older than Batman. I feel like they didn't put enough thought into the casting and threw in these kid villains incase the audience gets bored of just seeing a cop show. And that's a dumb ass idea, because it would make it more believable without them.

It was an ok premiere. Nothing amazing.

Better than TDKR, though.

LOL in your dreams. The dialogue and acting make TDKR look like a sweep at the oscars. And this is by far the worst Alfred yet.

Now that i think of it, it was pretty bad. The only thing that's staying with me is the actors performance for Penguin. Even Gordon, who was OK at best, might have felt like a young Jim but if you don't have the glasses and mustache, im going to feel a major disconnect.

I laughed so hard at a stupid line of dialogue/delivery from Bullock "shiny shoes! mother of god....shiny shoes!". It just instantly made me think of James Franco in Pineapple Express...

Nothing amazing.

Unremarkable and "okay" is what I feared most for this show. Hopefully it gets better.

I'll probably get around to watching the pilot some point this week, but I have a feeling I won't stay with this show for the long haul.

Oh yeah, the shiny shoes line was hilariously bad. I'm just hoping they have all the "forced name-drops" out of the way.

Hey Trav where's your top 50 films of all time list? Ehhhhh? EHHHH? :)

I'll tell you when you get me some shiny shoes, you loony bird.

Watched Gotham last night. Ugh...idk. There is some potential there, but I found it pretty rough overall. I think Jada Pinkett might've seriously been the highlight for me, she really seemed like she was having fun hamming it up and I enjoyed her character. I enjoyed Donal Logue as Bullock too and the relationship they set up between him and Gordon. I actually really liked the portrayal of Falcone too, possibly my favorite version of the character I've seen thus far. And yeah, the cinematography is pretty good.

Hated Barbara. Hated the stupid backstory they gave Barbara and Montoya. Hated the smashing you over the head with it villain references with Riddler and Ivy, same for Selina creeping around everywhere and witnessing the Wayne murders. I like the story they're setting up with Penguin, but that ending was laugh out loud bad for me. Did not like the portrayal of Alfred at ALL.

I know it's just a pilot, but this type of show especially needs to learn a thing or two about subtlety or the gimmick is going to get old real fast. Sadly, it's Fox and 'subtle' isn't exactly what they do best.

I will say that I enjoyed how the show moved along at a fast enough pace and kept things moving. I was never bored, so it that had going for it. Just too much cringe-worthy stuff for me. I'll give the next few eps a shot, I'm hoping the show capitalizes on its strengths and minimizes its weaknesses (which were glaring to me from the pilot) as it moves forward.

That sort of mediocrity (and im being extremely generous) is only acceptable because its television. Its such a twisted way to look at things.

Batman hasn't always been treated with the best quality (albeit he can't complain looking at other characters) , but Gotham was definitely one the lowest points of anything related with the character.

So we're on the exact same page. Im getting slaughtered by the fans over on every thread in that Gotham section.

Im being told (as well as a few others who agree with me) that the villains aren't shoehorned cuz the writers intended on having their origins. But it's about execution. Some even refuse to believe that some of the acting was really hammy. Whether you liked the acting/characters or not, im not an idiot, i can point out when acting isn't great and when an actor is being a cartoon character more than portraying a person. Barbara for instance was like a soap opera character. That doesn't mean one can't like it. I like Daggett but i can say as a fact that he was hamming it up. But even when he was doing that, he's still a damn good actor, one of Australia's best actually, and so i never felt his acting was "bad". He was just having fun like Jada had fun as Fish Mooney. But others in Gotham were just not good and/or hamming it up, yet posters on the hype can't admit it.

I loved Penguin but i also laughed at that ending. The way they shot him getting out of the water was like out of a Shumacher batman movie. Then he slices the guys throat for a sandwich lmao.

As soon as the intro happened with the Wayne murders, i was rolling my eyes thinking "Oh god so this is what the show is....every actor/character thinks they're living in a cartoon".

Yeah, it was a pretty rough around the edges pilot, but I want to see what they do with the next episode. If it keeps going down this route where everything is crammed in for the sake of fan service then I will probably stop watching it.

I already know the stuff with Bruce is going to annoy me to no end. Those previews of him holding his hand out over a candle, oh boy.

To tell you the truth, I don't care about Bruce Wayne at all, if it's just going to be him as a 12 year old. Why would anybody care?

Hell, that's really the reason why I don't care about this show to begin with. It reminds me of the Patton Oswalt joke about the Star Wars prequels. He doesn't care about Anakin when he's a kid, he just wants to see Darth Vader because he's a badass. Funny bit, youtube search Patton Oswalt on the Star Wars Prequels.

"I don't care where the stuff I love comes from! I just love the stuff I love!"

So you just like the batman cuz HE'S TEH COOOOLZ!!?

Im losing faith in this forum as the days roll on.

I know Shauner, I know. I was only joking, though. When I read Batman comics, the main thing I'm thinking is, "why are they showing all this Batman stuff? I wanna see more 12 year old Bruce Wayne adventures".

Is your faith now restored in talking about the non superhero aspects of these characters in a superhero forum? Or wait, am I in NonSuperoHype.com? :hmm

:hehe:

I just felt like with the Riddler thing, as an example, they shot their wad too soon. It would've been more fun to have him as a background character throughout the season and tease us a little more. Could've added a bit more intrigue, which would've been nice for Nygma. I really didn't need to have him start telling riddles in the first 10 minutes of episode 1. It takes the potential fun out of it. I like the approach they're taking with teasing different possible origins for The Joker though, that's good. Wish a little more restraint was shown with the other villains though. I know they were trying to make it super obvious that it was a Batman (adjacent) show for the general audience...I just feel like this show is in a bit of a bind in that a Batman-less Batman show is something that can appeal to the hardcore fans, but the compromises they have to make as a network primetime show could really end up bogging it down.

Hahaha.

But seriously Trav, i see what you're saying. Just showing a 10 or 12 year old Bruce Wayne..it doesn't really interest me either. The only thing that will keep me curious, is to see what they do with Penguin, if Gordon evolves in any way (look and attitude), and to see if these dumb villains get better.

Anyone think this Gotham episode was a little better? I thought it was myself. Still not great, but I thought it was better. The writers need to take some subtlety lessons still. We get it already, she's Catwoman.
