What was it that Ward pulled out from under his nail? I had left the room and missed just before this. What was the significance?

Not quite sure what it was exactly, but the idea is that it was causing him constant pain. It makes it easier to pass a lie detector test. One of the Ocean's 11 movies featured a similar trick.

I agree with this, the second time around, as the blackout beam was approaching Phil, Tripp started firing his weapon and it slowed down the blackout beam/it never reached Phil. Then they started to beat him back.

:

I rewatched this scene. Coulson beam was the first to affect Blackout. Coulson was the first to hit Blackout in the back instead of in the head. Remember they were trying to overload his senses with light so everyone else hit Blackout in the head. It seems that Blackout beam was absorbed by the gamma radiation that Coulson had aimed at him. Could the enhancement involved Loki's scepter? It seemed that Coulson aim was hitting in the area of the Heart or maybe the lungs.

Second, Ward was using a nail under his fingernail to fool the sensors in the lie detector. He was using it to give him pain so that his baseline would be erratic. Also he could generate random pain so that his responses could not be correlated to his answers.

Third, could Skye have used the window panel to summon help or allow the NSA to see where they had been hacked from. Could Maria Hill have lead them to Providence because Stark Industries had caught Skye's hack of the NSA and knew that the NSA would eventually trace back the hack. Maria could get "brownie points" and find out who was at Providence since the location was already compromised by the hack.

that someone was me! :woot:

And you rock for that suggestion sir....
I wouldn't even care if they changed Williams to Ward
His background, and brother possibly coming back as Grim Reaper would be cool

Another question. Everyone is thinking that the Maria mentioned by May's mom is Maria Hill. Could there be another Maria that May would look for?

i'm just glad that Ward is showing some personality; post heel-turn.

Ward hinted that he's used other identities. It's entirely possible that Grant Ward is an alias. He could very well have been born Eric (or Simon?) Williams.

- Why did the guy let Ward slide when he started failing the lie detector? The only thing Ward was truthful about was coming back for Skye. So someone who seemed untruthful about being a Hydra agent gets off scott free because he came back to the group for one person? That could've meant he came back to kill her or kidnap her (which he did). Maybe I'm getting things mixed up so I'll have to watch the episode again to be sure.

- Before Skye found out that Ward was a traitor I said to myself "How many times does this guy have to say that he's not a good man for her to get the hint"? The first time he said it I would've went straight to Coulson.

It looked like a tiny pin. As Eddie said, it was probably for the lie detector but I'm not so sure. It's not as if he knew he was going to subjected to one.

I don't think anyone wants to consider the reality that, that may be the sole reason he'll stay on the show.....

so why do you keep bringing it up? after the FF stuff, you're going to end up with a reputation.

people reflexively think the opposite of people who self-deprecate.

Also, Trip is a much more "normal" guy than Ward. This makes for an easier attraction between him and Simmons. This plot line would also open up a Skye-Fitz possiblity. Both of these potential relationship would allow more depth for both Fitz and Simmons characters.

Yeah but how many murders did Eric Williams commit?
He betrayed The Avengers, I don't recall any murders .

Wasnt Simon Williams a scientist? or was it only in the cartoon..
I think Whedon mentioned some time ago that he doesnt like Wonderman.. so probably it wont be him, but you never know

Well, since you bring up FF it shows the obvious double standard. We're supposed to believe in color blind casting for Johnny Storm, but at the same time,we're supposed to count the ethnicity of the cast members to make sure we have certain races represented. You can't have it both ways.

So... Ward looked ready to put a bullet in May before he realized she was leaving. Did he let her go because deep down he's hesitant about killing these people, or was it simply safer to let her walk and not risk a fight?

Also I like how casually May just walked out of the Canadian wilderness when just last week they made a point to talk about how rough the 7 miles to the coordinates were.

Either its already summer :whatever: or May took the shortcut route behind the base :oldrazz: or she has superpowers:wow:

Simon was an engineer who was forced to take over his dead father's company (and got caught embezzling). it was kind of a stupid origin, though.

I cant believe I'm saying this but i thought Skye was really good in this episode. Her breakdown over the Ward revelation was a good bit of acting. Good stuff.

Given the dearth of top notch actors, it is a bit of a shame that Patton Oswald wont be recurring. But I'm not complaining. Acting and plotting wise this was the best ep yet imo. And my personal fave.

Oh and it was nice to see Amy Acker.

Yes she was great, and clearly she is smarter than Ward

actually, you can. but this isn't agents of shield or even super hero related. i'm certainly not going to discuss it.

it's Canada. she probably had 2 or 3 friendly offers to drive her back to civilization.

Ive been saying Garrett or Ward will end up being the Grim Reaper since we found out they were bad and don't fear the reaper started that turn turn turn episode... If they make Ward Wonderman all the better, though I would guess it would be one of his his brothers.

Well, his baselines were off because of the pain from the sliver under his nail. Because of that, Keonig could never be sure if an answer was a lie or a misreading, which is why he asked him a second time. The only question he thought he was lying about was why he was there. When he got a truthful answer, he let it go. Although, yes, he was stupid for not asking "are you HYDRA" again. But it was an otherwise good scene and it needed a resolution. Unless you want him to beat the lie-detector, it's a good solution.

Garrett's already a comic character. I don't really see them making him another one, although I could see his cybernetics being earlier versions of Deathlok tech.

Let's not forget she could know some of the Canadian orgs ....Alpha Flight, Department H, etc....she have a few friends in those groups. But she specifically told her mom she didn't trust anybody else, so I guess she went GTA style across Canada...that's a long trip going through Ontario alone.
