I disagree. A good enough actor can say ANY line. And I have read my share of awful dialogue. I did theater locally for about a decade or so, and most of the English language plays staged here were translated by people who most often missed the point of scene rhythms, of showing differences in cadences, vocabularies, and speech manerisms for each character, and even in making sure cues proved consistent in linking value from the lines of one character to the other. It all had to be fixed by the acting, and most often it was. And really few of the people I worked ever approached the caliber of truly great actors. Certainly I never did. Yet one adapts, finds the way.

I often disagree with what most people call categorically bad lines in fandom reviews. People do not speak like that, some say. Which people?
Do all people speak the same? Don't some people speak in messy patterns, without making proper sentences, dangling clauses and running on in confusing ways as they change their mind in mid-speech? A person once told me during a conversation that I spoke like a book. I asked him what book in particular to know if he was being derisive or not. I read a lot, and tend to discuss some things with people who are highly articulate. My speech in those instances is not the same as when chatting in the changing room after martial arts practice.

Now, since we are dealing with entertainment that needs to reach and satisfy an audience, we must have a measure of clarity and style to make the work entertaining, so the lines must sound naturalistic more than be actually realistic. But still, if TO US a line sounds stiff, overly formal, over-constructed, instead of automatically labeling it "bad dialogue" maybe we should wonder if the person who spoke that way does not have a character that justifies such construction, or is in a circumstance that makes him speak that way.

Of course, some lines may seem awful no matter how we contextualize them, but we hardly see those that often outside porn or Asylum productions.

You know, as an aside, Laurence Olivier in his autobiography wrote that when he acted in one of his first film roles, being already a recognized and well regarded stage actor, he had to spend take after take repeating lines that the director found unacceptable in delivery, and said he had to basically relearn the craft of how to express himself for that particular role since his stage delivery was deemed completely wrong by the director.

Not surprise really... film acting is typically much more subtle than stage acting (I've done my share of both as well).

I was really only half-serious with my comment there but I do think it's a bad line. I usually try not to harp on dialogue too much because, as you said, because I think people walk into movies expecting the majority of characters to speak a certain way. And if they don't, they find it jarring. When in reality, everyone is different; some people are prone to deliver longwinded rants, while others have trouble stringing a few words together. And others might speak like a book, as you said. But in regards to that line, I don't like it, especially when I see the word "cringeworthy" thrown around here every five minutes over dialogue in these films.

Sometimes when a particular line takes us out of the narrative it may not be the line itself or its acting delivery but even the very cinematography contextualizing it. Some lines work best in a close up, others in a moving away shot.

It's not exactly easy to get photos when you have no idea when and where they will be filming.

He doesn't need to be intimidating when he's talking to Gordon about irradiated bills. He just sounds silly.

That's where it really comes unstuck for me. You keep expecting Gordon to call him out on it, and ask him who he's trying to impress, or why he is growling out all that confidential information so loudly. I wish he had said "no, I'm sorry- just stop".

Seriously, the guy runs around in full body armor, uses high tech gadgets, drives a tank, and has a bat motif, yet you expect Gordon to have an issue with his voice?
