Supergirl Katie McGrath IS Lena Luthor!

To those calling for that grey area...yeah I'll take that. But if Berlanti and Guggenheim and the dopey writers do turn Lena heel, it will be like wathcing a Road Runner or Tweety/Sylvester cartoon like I did back in the day and still do on DVD...

IF YOU'VE SEEN ONE YOU'VE SEEN THEM ALL!

They don't have to make her evil in order to give her character more layers than just being Kara's BFF...if that is all she is, she will be a very boring character along the lines of James.
Being Kara's BFF doesn't mean she can't have layers. Kara needs a BFF and a female friend who's not a potential love interest, imo. Winn used to serve the BFF role - until he fell out of the "love interest" part. Alex used to serve it - 'til Maggie entered the picture. James never will/did. And Mon-El is obviously the love interest.

Lena's a powerful CEO and genius scientist who's a constant target of her evil family (and people who hate her evil family, so she gets it from both sides), trying to get her company out from under their shadow, and trying to change the world on a huge scale. And she also has a tendency to throw herself into dangerous situations in an attempt to help - much like Lois Lane in that way. There's PLENTY to to work with there already, on top of being Kara's loyal friend. She's already got more on her plate than her other "friend" characters, so I don't see "boring" when I see her at all. Unlike the other people in Kara's life, she can actually (and does) impact their world in big ways. She has actually saved almost as many lives as Supergirl this season, and mostly without so much as a thank you from anybody. Meanwhile, all James has done all season is try to make himself feel important - completely ignoring the fact that he had the most influential media empire at his disposal the whole time. Lena's not the one who needs a character make-over, imo. She's already plenty interesting to me, especially when compared to certain other supporting characters.

But as I said, I AM open to her stance on aliens clashing with Kara's, but ya know, given the alien detection device, I'd say it already does. So they could explore that more. Otherwise, I'd say she's interesting enough as is.

I don't see her boring at this point at all, that is what I like about her....we don't know all of who she is, that is intriguing. Nor am I talking full blown evil, or evil as in against Kara/Supergirl....just that we don't always know what she is thinking, I want them to keep that aspect of her.

Oh yes, she's naturally enigmatic, and I do like that about her too.

You know what is enigmatic? Her accent. I love Katie, but there is way too much Irish in her voice here. :woot:

LOL, I think Kelly's said this before too, and I still don't hear it! There was one time when she seemed to struggle with the word "lawyers," but that's the only time I've noticed it. Also the way she said "anions," but then everyone seemed to pronounce that word differently throughout the episode, so I just chalked it up to nobody knowing the correct pronunciation, lol.

Lena doesnt come across Irish to me either. I think the actress is doing a good job at portraying her as an American

I probably have seen too much of her, and just British television and film in general. But I can just hear her fighting it. It isn't a problem and I find it quite cute, but I definitely notice it. More so recently.

Gonna have to go back and really listen in to her scenes. Like Havok83 I haven't even noticed it.

Listen to hell Jonn says Olsen...... he pronounces it Allsin....lol

It is most noticeable when she goes on for a bit (slips into the end of her sentences) and especially when she lowers her voice.

Listen to the bit that starts around :31 seconds. It happens multiple times:

I don't know the rules on posting newer clips, but I also found it noticeable with Kara in episode 20 I believe.

Also, she seems to do the Eva Green thing, where she starts talking mostly with her throat at times to cover the accent. So maybe I am noticing that as well.

:funny: I still don't hear it, even in that clip.

I agree she does the "Eva Green" thing though, but I thought that was pretty standard when people are doing American accents, and only noticeable when compared to their normal one. Coming from the South, I've noticed we talk more from the throat than someone say, from Ireland, but less so than someone from Germany or Sweden. At least that's what it sounds like to me.

It is because you don't want to hear it FC. :o

I fully admit that my previous knowledge of her "normal" voice probably has something to do with this. She isn't Saoirse Ronan or Keira Knightley who basically ditch their regular tone when they do an accent, so I am probably noticing the ghost of her normal voice.

But I will say the "Eva Green" thing isn't normal. Thinking of all the Brits doing American accents, I can't really think of many who do that, outside of Southern accents, and even Eva Green mostly does it when she is doing her English accent. Which has oddly become her base accent. :funny:

Well I'll take your word for it on Eva Green's accent. I always thought it was just particularly prominent with her because she's French and they generally exercise different muscles in their speech. But if Katie's doing it too then IDK, lol.

All I know is Katie sounds American to me on this show, more so than Eva did in Dark Shadows.

I am pretty sure that is why Eva does it as well, which is why it confuses me. :funny:

Considering the two movies I have heard Eva do an American accent, I will agree with you there.

Yeah, but they don't have to make her an antagonistic force, either. She can be Kara's BFF just fine. . . and still have conflict between them over things like "You solve problems by courage and inspiration, I solve problems via cleverness and trickery". Disagreements over best ways to approach helping the world large scale. Issues with loving family members *despite* them being insane and evil.

Which is to say, I think Lena, as she exists, is *already* a perfectly good layered character. She doesn't need forced drama added to make her "complex".

Finally heard it that clip. :funny: It's like her real accent is desperately trying to free itself.

The Supergirl season finale is TONIGHT, and we talked to the show's Lena Luthor for the scoop.

Katie McGrath Knows How Learning Supergirl’s Secret Would Affect Lena

Lena Luthor and Kara Danvers are great friend, but what would happen if Supergirl's secret were revealed? Katie McGrath knows.

Time and time again, Supergirl‘s Lena Luthor has proven she’s loyal, compassionate and quite capable of carving out her own path in life. Why is it, then, that people automatically lump her into the same category as her other nefarious family members? Could she really be a ruthless, over-ambitious, evil villain willing to do anything to further her own agenda and obtain power, or is she simply what she appears to be — a good person, and a great friend.
Lately, certain circumstances and individuals have crushed her spirit, and in the season’s penultimate episode, her mother Lillian once again lied to the good guys and betrayed Supergirl. However, both Lillian and Rhea are about to learn a valuable lesson — never, ever underestimate a Luthor.

Ahead of tonight’s season finale, McGrath spoke with CBR about the Luthor legacy, Lena’s mommy issues, the last stand against Rhea and what if Lena learned Kara’s secret.
CBR: There is both a stigma and strength associated with Lena’s family name. What does it mean for her to be a Luthor?
Katie McGrath: Everybody has this preconceived notion because of her last name. She feels that no matter what she does, at times people are always going to put her in the same box as Lionel, Lex and now, obviously, with her mother, Lillian. That’s what she’s constantly struggling with. In the back of Lena’s mind, she feels no matter how much good she does, ultimately, everybody believes that she is going to go the same way as her brother. That’s frustrating for her.
Lena is an extremely intelligent woman. How did she ever get blindsided by Rhea?
I think she was just so desperate for somebody to tell her she was doing an excellent job. If you think of all the stuff that she went through alone this season with her mother – to have somebody who, in an unqualified way, say, “You’re amazing. You are brilliant. I’m so proud of you. I’d be happy to have you as a daughter.” – How can she not respond to that? Lena was just so desperate for that.
How responsible does Lena feel for the Daxamite invasion and the current state of National City?
I think she feels a fair whack of responsibility on that one, to be honest. For somebody who prides themselves so much on their intelligence, for who it’s such a large part of their persona – to be taken in, in such a massive and almost obvious way – she feels extremely responsible. That’s what drives her to do what she does in episode 22. It’s a direct response to what she feels with Rhea and the destruction of National City.
Lena’s mother issues unfolded during the year. Was Lillian betraying Supergirl the last straw?
It’s safe to say there are a few scenes involving Lillian and Lena, which resolve the matter one way or another. For Lena, a lot of what happens in Season 2 will come to some sort of resolution.
What are your thoughts on Lena’s friendship with Kara?
It’s a relationship of equals. As far as Lena is concerned, Kara is Kara. Kara is not Supergirl. For Lena, she has a friend on the same level as her, who is fantastic at their job, is intelligent, smart, capable and strong. What’s lovely is it’s two normal women figuring out life together as friends. I think that’s what is important to Lena, that she has somebody where she doesn’t have to be the head of the company. She doesn’t have to be somebody’s daughter. She can just be herself. And, Kara can be that. She doesn’t have to be Supergirl or a reporter. She can just be the flawed human being that we are.
Considering Superman’s history with the Luthors, how do you believe Lena would react if she discovered Kara’s secret?
A really large part of me believes Lena would be hurt that she didn’t know, but she would understand. At the same time, there’s such a drive for Lena to be so different than the rest of her family, and she is the opposite of them. I know she would respond in the opposite way, that she would understand.
Now that Lena has been rescued from the Daxamite spaceship, where does she fit into the finale and the war against Rhea’s forces?
She’s extremely important. At the end of the day, Lena is one of the smartest people within National City. She is intelligent and experienced. She has LexCorp, L-Corp, behind her. You would be wrong to think she is down and out when she is such a fantastic woman, and such a strong woman. You would be wrong to discount what she could bring to the battle.
How will the death of her ex-lover Jack affect Lena in the future?
That remains to be seen, which is pretty exciting for Season 3. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to come back and do that. There were so many little seeds that were planted throughout Season 2. That stuff with Rahul is part of that, it’s to see those little moments that are going to become massive moments. That’s what is exciting about being an actor and that’s what we want to find in every job moving forward.
You have been bumped up to series regular for Season 3. What are you hoping the writers will explore?
Every time I get a script from them, I am completely blown away and amazed that they want me to be in the show any more than I am, but I’m so grateful. They have this great core character that they’ve created, and then they keep throwing these different things out at her. I have complete faith in the team. I know nothing about Season 3, but I know it’s going to be as exciting, and as edge of your seat and nail-biting, as this one.
Airing Monday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as the Girl of Steel, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers and Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott, with appearances by Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant and Tyler Hoechlin as Superman.

I hope she takes a darker turn in season 3. I'd rather her be more of a gray character than all the way good. I feel like there's been wasted potential with her and was hoping to see more character growth and an evolution as the season progressed. I like the character well enough but not sure what her greater purpose is outside of being a pawn in the battle between Supergirl and her mother. I thought the interactions with Reia was a chance to do something different with her but that didnt go anywhere

You know I feel like she's a stand in for Maxwell Lore in many ways. I imagine has Lord stuck around for Season Two they would have had a redemption arc for him where he helps the team out but they don't quite trust him.

With Lena they've teased her turning very little and in the end you just know she's gonna end up tricking her Mother. They've done it too many times in this season so now you just know she's gonna do that. Tbh it harms Lillian's character cause it makes her come across as an idiot.

Better than making Lena an idiot for falling for it and turning bad for no good reason.

Are you just enjoying having digs at everything I'm saying? The writers are redoing the same thing over and over. It's lazy as **** writing and it's predictable. Had they done a better job this season we may think Lena could turn bad seen as though they keep attempting to tease she may then not doing anything with it.

Well Darth, you'll be happy to hear I finally heard the accent slip in the finale.

Going dark doesnt necearily mean she turns bad. I wouldnt say she would have no reason as it seemed like thats a route they could have gone when Reia took an interest in her. I could have seen manipulation cause a change in her, especially when her ex was murdered and died in her arms. That could have been a turning point to give her more of a distinct personality that could have taken her in a different direction
