RoboCop Reboot - Part 1

Swedish site moviezine.se has an interview with Kinnaman: (translated for your plesure (so excuse the grammar:cwink:))
Soon you'll step into a completely different role, namely, "RoboCop". When is it starting?

- I begin to rehearse at the end of August, then we begin to shoot September 15. I've tried on the suit ... But did not even dare take a picture myself, what if you lose your phone? That's so damn sensitive. We have tried the suit on on several different occasions, it is a long process. We have shown the suit to all the toy manufacturers and it looks damn cool. It'll look damn good.

What do you think of the original?

- I love the original, I've seen it maybe 15-20 times. There are several remakes now of Verhoeven films. He has a very special tone, it's over-the-top and very violent. I'm not a superfan of remakes, really, but now there is another very strong and good director who makes it. When I first found out that there would be a new "RoboCop" it was not something I was interested join at all. I thought that I would have to watch it. But when I found out that José Padilha who would be doing it, then it became something entirely different. And he has a whole new angle on this. There is an element of satire, but it is not at all in the same way that Verhoeven does. It will be much more "gritty".

Usually people tend to be a little sceptical of remakes.

- In the theater we play our favorite stories over and over again. Our generation is maybe not so much into theater, but there is something natural in that we as a people tell our favorite stories over and over again. Then there is obviously a commercial interest, they work well because people know the brand and know what it is.

How many "RoboCop" films have you signed up?

- Three. But these kind of big movies are always planned to be franchises. If the first one becomes a success, they have it guaranteed that the second one is also going to run well. If it's not crappy.

He played the "gritty" card ! Bad sign.
Also "We have shown the suit to all the toy manufacturers" doesn't inspire me much if at all.
I fear that Robocop will be sissyfied.
Wait & See.

Well it's pretty obvious we will be getting Robocop action figures...hell even a hot toys version of the new Robocop.

My take on these supposed script leaked bits is that it's at least somewhat true to the heart of the original. Robocop is essentially a product and the way he is treated is essentially that, according to this. In the original they kinda just...let him lose to shoot a bunch of criminals whenever he wanted, as part of a somewhat convoluted scheme to buy the whole town. But It's not the 80s anymore and having the same background and setting would not be a right move.

And its not like he wasn't a product in the original.

So we're gonna get 4! different suits? Damn, it's gonna suck if we love 2.0 or 3.0 only to lose it a couple scenes later :(

Don't tell me you are upset because of the all laughing at the "original" design thing?
I love the original Robocop, but he does have a very 80´s look that doesn't hold up nowdays.
Just imagine a ROM movie without updating the armor....

That's the only moment that had me thinking, "This sounds awful and stupid," not because that kind of moment is a bad idea, but because the way it's described, it sounds like a real dick move. Just having characters point at the original RoboCop and laugh would be lousy, but there's a good, funny moment there of saying, "We need to revise this."

The rest of the aspects described didn't sound great in how they were described, but then Drew had an agenda to make this movie sound ******. He didn't accomplish that 100%, though, because all the ideas he mentions sound cool and right, and hopefully they'll be executed well. I like the concept of multiple versions of RoboCop as a take-off on "iPad 2 one month, iPad 3 the next" climate. RoboCop as Transformer? Boy, I hope the Transformers fans who only hated Michael Bay's movies aren't complaining about that, because that would be stupid. Me, I'm indifferent; sounds fine. I'm pretty much in the same place with this thing; I'll probably see it, I'm mainly interested because of the cast and hoping they were attracted to more than the paycheck.

To me, it just sounds like overkill. And right now, I wouldn't even say it's going to be satirical, as we don't even know what kind of narrative they'll present it in. It could be very straightforward with no kind of satire attached to it. We'll just have to see....

At least the multiple variations of the suit will let them sell more toys :o

I wouldnt be surpirised if this was in the movie too, I wouldn't put it past OmniCorp to actually sell RoboCop figures to kids to make him more likeable for the ordinary citizens.

The different versions of RoboCop is genius, he's not a human anymore, he's a product.

Which makes it more gruesome IMO. How much of Murphy is left?

In the 80's movie it was clear "Murphy" was just a component to create the Robocop.

"Lose the arm"

"Well, he signed the papers. So we can do whatever we want with him"

If 2013 Robocop has some transformers element, I just hope his hands turn into blasters or he joins his arms to form one giant blaster.

That's it though. I hope he doesn't turn into Ford F150 or something like that.

Nice interview with joel. Can't wait to see how he turns out as robo. As for the drew stuff I still don't give a dam. Now sure some elements sound bad but I still can't see all it being true. With the talent on this make a terrible terrible ideas. So that is why I like to judge things on my own views.

Joel also said on Swedish morning-tv a couple of days ago that RoboCop will be a re-imagining that is very much it's own thing and an extension of some of the original themes, but also has a lot of nods to the fans of the original. It's not a re-make in the sense that they are gonna redo scene for scene or have the exact same plot.

Funniest thing in that interview though was the host's blooper in saying RoboC*ck instead of RoboCop. Joel jokingly replied that that's the porn version and that he won't be in that. :hehe:

Haha, a co-worker told me that yesterday and played up the video of it, pretty funny :hehe:

Of course but toys manufacturers have no say in the suit design, their opinion means nothing. IMO.
If he has said : hey, we showed the suit to the Winston studio or Rob Bottinhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Bottin#cite_note-0 it would have been much more credible.

Another nice addition to the cast with the actress going to play the police chief.

Just saw Tropa de Elite 2 yesterday, and after watching that, I can say I'm totally confident that Padillha is the man for this one. Even after reading the reaction to the script. If you haven't watched it, do it. It's a great film and will make you all a ittle more confident on this.

I believe he can pull off the satire, narrative and action scenes nicely, and he has a style that I feel fits nicely for the movie.

I agree with his points but have to laugh at this quote from his TDKR review.

“The Dark Knight Rises” is the worst Batman film of all time. It is worse than Schumacher’s “Batman & Robin.” It is worse than “Batman XXX: A Porn Parody.” It is worse than Leslie Martinson’s “Batman” film from 1966. It’s worse than “The Dark Knight Raises

Not only that, it’s actually worse than “Catwoman
