RoboCop Reboot - Part 1

Without any details...that kind of doesn't mean anything.

I really find it hard to believe that a studio would hire a director based on his vision for a reboot and then poo poo 9/10 of his ideas.

We'll see.

Well this news certainly isnt good, I had high hopes for this re-make but usually when a directors vision isnt supported you get a poorly constructed movie. We'll see but my hopes are certainly lower now.

it could be that Padilha agreed to do a stupid glossy blockbuster hollywood movie but then changed his mind on set .

it wouldnt be the first time a studio changed their mind about a movie durring filming.

I believe in Padilha. Which is why I'm disappointed that we probably won't see his vision on screen.

That's what happens when you're more of an avant garde idealistic director, you don't have enough pull to get your say. You have to have made a studio some cheddar beforehand to get in.

i thought that this was the movie for Padilha to make money to get more freedom on personal projects.

Catch-22. You need experience to get the job, but you need the job to get experience.

...Sometimes executives make better decisions than directors...sometimes.

Yeah its not good news that its been hell for him but what if his ideas were terrible.

Either Jose isn't used to the Hollywood system and this is the norm; OR the studio is micro-managing the crap out of him like what Sony did with Marc Webb and Spider-Man.

It's hard to say judging from his perspective.

That being said, I have a theory that the studio really wants it to be PG-13. I've got no proof on that, but judging how the studio system is now, this COULD be the case. I mean, it's hard to believe that The Matrix sequels made so much money despite being Rated R, but that was another time.

I'm going to bet that a bunch of the ideas that are being reformatted or nipped in the bud by the studio are visual ones.

Remember Padilha's idea of making Robocop more humanoid and having his eyes visible through the visor? Maybe stuff like that is getting a big "No" from the studio and them telling him not to tinker too much with the original design. They may want a sleek update but not a radically different design.

Things like that.

I still will never get how the Matrix trilogy got that R rating. There are a couple violent instances in the series where I could see it being light R, but they weren't really all that bad for kids.

Yeah, if you watch any of them now..it's mind boggling that they were rated R. Nothing gratuitous besides maybe for a few scenes in Revolutions. Hell, to me, Cloverfield was more violent than any of those movies and that got a PG-13.

I agree. It's like i'll never understand why Halo is rated mature in gaming

Most FPS get that rating because you're more or less mowing down multiple living creatures with a gun. Green blood or not, it's not that kid friendly I guess.

It's not because of the aliens its because you constantly see your human allies getting gunned downed with a ton of blood to boot.

Yeah I get those but Halo never really had blood. When does actual filming start for this?

You've pretty much summed up Fox and some of their more infamous directorial clashes.

The Robocop Remake Is Causing “Hell” For Its Director

It's sad if it's really the case... I trust in Padilha...

Seriously....this is surprising because ....??!!??
It totally was expected. Nine of out 10 cases , (foreign) directors who have never worked inside the hollywood system get a reality check.
The amount of creative freedom one gets is almost zero.
There is a saying in Hollywood when it comes to scripts.
"Great script. Who can we get to rewrite it".
That's from a book on many development hell projects but IMO the same applies to directors as well. If you don't have the power , you can make one killer pitch and even have a movie greenlit only to basically see every proposed idea being changed.

Having said that , there is also the other side of the story.
Who knows maybe Padilha is coming with some pretty wild ideas and the studio is reigning him in. In some cases the studio needs to step it. Look at how John Carter turned out. Some times free reign back fires big time.

Padilha should've prepared for this when entering this world.

Sadly, it's true. Hollywood is not driven by creativity...it's driven by producers who don't really know how to make a good movie, but they know the right people and handle the money.

Also here's the other thing. A lot of times in movies like this the final product is only like a fraction of what you originally envision.

Just for example, the original Ghostbusters movie in its early stages was quite different than the movie we ultimately saw which is still recognized as a classic. Lots of stuff gets cut out and massaged in the writing and development process.

I also got to believe Sony and MGM are more cautious now after what happened with Total Recall.
