RoboCop Reboot - Part 2

ok about the robocop rating.

we all know why Verhovens movies are violent. and we all know that no director is like Verhoven. so why should it be R rated?

Why not? I miss big bidget, R-rated, go-for-broke Hollywood spectacle so much. Just from reading the plot descriptions of this new Robocop, it already sounds R-rated (a torso with just a head and an arm? The murder of a child? ED-209 going too far?). To go PG-13 would feel like a safe cash grab (see: the 4th Die Hard. Or, like I did, don't see it and wait for the unrated version). Seriously, we have so much Hollywood history showing us that R-rated material can do gangbusters at the box office, so why the hell not?

If it's anything like the script synopsis, I can see how it could be "R" rated.

Everyone knows Robocop as a violent property. People want to see him shooting the living hell hell out of things. The violence is a huge reason why it works. Pg-13 watered down bad guys are gonna suck. He needs to be against ruthless violent enemies. No one wants a half assed, watered down version of a movie thats over 20 years old. They need to up it if anything.

Eh, that article was pretty lame. The dude is just completely self righteous.

Eh, I hate that suit and I'm not even that much of a robocop fan. Why the black? It just seems like they made it different for the sake of being different.

The idea that the suit looks less robotic than the original is sort of silly. It looks robotic, it just looks more like modern representations of robotics. The design of the limbs is reminiscent of Deus Ex: Human Revolution (which was one big fat Robocop homage, amusingly).

The fact that it appears to have a matte texture is unfortunate, but that could be circumstantial (as the teaser image on the website has a glossy finish), so I'm adopting a "wait and see" attitude in that particular point. Likewise, all black, all the time would be unfortunate, but since evidence indicate the suit has colour modes, hopefully no problem there.

The stray hand is weird, and could be an issue for me. Right now we're not seeing the whole picture, so a few things (the hand, the colour and the texture) will inform exactly how I feel about the suit when we get a better idea of how they wash out. I have to admit, though, the killer redesign on the helmet has earned them a lot of leeway from me.

It's SWAT Mode. He can switch appearances.

I don't see how this is much more robotic

Iron Man is not even a true robot but it still has a much more robotic look:

Its odd how one thread on a corperate forum have people liking the new suit with an optimistic out look while on another forum created from fans they hate the suit across the board. Watering the PLANTs much.

I don't know what to tell you, man, the difference looks pretty stark to me.

Not that the roboticness of the suit is particularly important anyway; modern robotic design are sloping increasingly towards stronger approximations of human shapes, so this is expected--but more importantly, the costume isn't what made Robocop seem robotic anyway (no slight intended to the brilliant original costume). It was Weller's performance that created the illusion that it was machinery and not just a guy in a suit.

The new design looks no less robotic than the original--again, only closer to more modern ideas about what robotic bodies look like (and perhaps more generic). If the role is played with the right body language, it will appear perfectly robotic--and if not, then we'll have much bigger problems to worry about than the suit.

I can't find it right now but i do know there was a quote from someone from the new film referring to how the new robocop will be faster and less stiff than the previous one and as you say it was wellers performance that made robocop robotic.

How they toe the line of "robotic movement" is to be determined.

I think the suit helped with the performance. I remember hearing that he worked on specific movements for an entirely different look and then changed it completely after seeing the actual suit so the look and feel of the suit is still important.

I guess we won't really know how it looks in action for awhile, so I'll try not to judge just yet.

I take issue with this:

I wasn't digging Cap's look in The Avengers spy pics and footage, and I didn't really care for it in the movie, but, the movie itself was so ****ing good that is was a non-issue.

he did look like a Total Nerd in that Helmet, the suit was just Cosplay Bad hell cosplayers made better Cap suits than THAT.
How the hell did he agree to wear that? He looked like a giant Nerd in that getup, was just off,.

to me, the problem with the suit is not that it doesn't look robotic enough, but it looks exactly the same as that GI JOE picture and that Iron Man picture put together....

someone look at that Robocop suit, one person wouldnt know it's any different from GI JOE unless they're specifically told it's Robocop... and thats the real problem: it looks too ordinary.

hence the need for the classic color scheme

I love all the people not paying the least bit attention to the rest of the thread and questioning the color scheme.

I like the design of the suit (considering this is how a lot of cyborgs/robots are presented in being slim models over bulky), but I'm not feeling the all black SWAT mode. If anything, SWAT mode should have added extra armor protection, IMO.

I think it does have additional armor in SWAT mode. The normal armor is described as changing, with additional plates moving into place for SWAT mode. Either this IS the additional armor, or they’ll CGI even more protection on top of this.

It looks more like a body suit compared to a man who is mostly machine. Looks like a generic gi joe suit, like here:

No...no it doesn’t. Other than the fact that both are black and have "plates”.

It was Weller's performance that created the illusion that it was machinery and not just a guy in a suit.

Exactly. Weller, if anything, looked like a guy in a techy suit of armor. It was the sound effects and movements/performance that made it seem inherently robotic.

"Ordinary"?

I think it looks like a body suit. It doesn't even look metal, it looks rubber.

lets get someone to photoshop some silver in that spy pic! in the appropriate places i see it looking very cool!

looks plenty robotic like saint said it reminds me of deuce ex human revolution who has a more sleek modern more cybernetic android approach

i never said it didnt look robotic enough... i said it looks too stereotpyical of robotics... hence the need of the silver
