Your implication is that there's only room in the film entertainment landscape for one type of filmmaking. Why does it have to be that way?
I don't think there should only be one form of film. I love diversity in all forms of media. If every single film were the same it would probably become really, really boring. Sometimes, for some films, I do just like to sit back, turn my brain off and watch. And I also admit to liking
Live Free or Die Hard, (which was made by none other than Len Wiseman himself).
What I do have a problem with is people comparing the
Total Recall remake to the new
Robocop film. According to naysayer's logic, "The former was an unnecessary remake. The latter is also a remake. Therefore, the latter must also be an unnecessary remake." This assumption is pretty ridiculous, because while the former was nearly note-for-note remake of the original, Padilha has expressed that he wanted to take the core concepts and themes of the original and reinterpret them for this film.
The comparison is totally ridiculous, because one studied English literature and economics, and the other was an art major. One makes thought-provoking, but also entertaining, films, and the other makes pure entertainment. And there's nothing wrong with that.
I'm not saying one should exclude the other. Both have their place. I'm saying that comparing the quality of both is utterly ridiculous.
