RoboCop Reboot - Part 4

I like the poster, but it would look better without the underscore and the ''Crime has a new enemy'' tagline.
The tagline is terrible. "Part man, part machine. All cop." from the '87 movie poster is infinitely more effective.

I expect this movie to be like the Total Recall remake; shiny and forgettable.

Except for the fact that we have a great director at the helm and not a hack like Len Wiseman.

^This.

I really hate when people compare this movie to the Total Recall remake, when Padilha has proven to be an infinitely better filmmaker and storyteller (just look at his IMDB page) than Wiseman has done in his entire career. Plus, Jose Padilha has studied English literature, politics and economics. Len Wiseman got his start because he worked in the art department on Godzilla (1998).

Also, Total Recall was pretty much a note-for-note, beat-for-beat remake, while this film is clearly trying to take some of the core themes from the original and do a different take on the source material. It's almost like a reinterpretation than a remake.

What does that have to do with anything? I swear, the elitism on display here is hilarious, and the arguments some of you make to invalidate certain filmmakers is ridiculous.

I know. It's like if someone didn't come from a "proper" past or education their directing, writing or acting just isn't good enough and never will be.

The trailer was a part of Thor: The Dark World and it's looking okay to me. I'm still inbetween, not a ranting "it'll suck" or "it'll be great" fan.

I think it is cool that he is holding the iconic Auto 9 pistol (same gun as the original Robo) but he probably does not use it in the movie.

Well gee, it's like comparing Michael Bay to Christopher Nolan. One is a master storyteller and the other is a hack who's only interested in money shots. Padilha is the only reason why I'm taking this reboot seriously. Jose's films are filled with political subtext and pop-culture and social issues/satire. He meshes perfectly with this franchise.

Bro, this is Jose we're talking about here. I'm expecting my IQ to go up a few points after I watch this new Robocop. Don't knock the smarts and stuff.

Though ironically I'm sure Jose couldn't give two craps about it. :oldrazz:

The guy is well educated and worldly. He cares about everything he does. I mean, when you have lines like "robophobic" or "good cop/bad cop....bad cop/Robocop", you can just hear his English Literature degree shine threw.

I'm sure he doesn't but it never hurts to have a guy who can... you know... write and direct a good film. I mean, fanboys are asking for identical elements from the original to make it's way into the reboot. Well, Jose is notorious for those attributes in his films.

I'm going to watch a movie called Robocop for the deep literary importance it will so clearly have. It's the next King's Speech.

Judging from the script, I don't care what you'll watch it for. I'm just glad Padilha is utilizing what made the original stand out (man's relationship with technology and a socio-political presence).

Your sarcastic reply isn't devoided of truth.

Indeed but it doesn't excuse lame lines.

Your implication is that there's only room in the film entertainment landscape for one type of filmmaking. Why does it have to be that way?

I don't think there should only be one form of film. I love diversity in all forms of media. If every single film were the same it would probably become really, really boring. Sometimes, for some films, I do just like to sit back, turn my brain off and watch. And I also admit to liking Live Free or Die Hard, (which was made by none other than Len Wiseman himself).

What I do have a problem with is people comparing the Total Recall remake to the new Robocop film. According to naysayer's logic, "The former was an unnecessary remake. The latter is also a remake. Therefore, the latter must also be an unnecessary remake." This assumption is pretty ridiculous, because while the former was nearly note-for-note remake of the original, Padilha has expressed that he wanted to take the core concepts and themes of the original and reinterpret them for this film.

The comparison is totally ridiculous, because one studied English literature and economics, and the other was an art major. One makes thought-provoking, but also entertaining, films, and the other makes pure entertainment. And there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm not saying one should exclude the other. Both have their place. I'm saying that comparing the quality of both is utterly ridiculous.

I don't know how someone can watch the latest trailer and not at least think it looks like a solid film.

It appears to be a good bit more introspective and exploratory than the original and fairly well made to boot, without losing some of the cheese and satire that made the original so memorable and relevant.

Looking forward to it.

I actually liked the first trailer more, and I still wasn't blown away by that one. I dunno, we'll see, maybe it'll turn out to be a good movie? Just have to wait and see....

Meh, it still looks like Total Recall. It looks like they are trying to make him look like Spider-Man, not Robocop.

Lol. Because he is more mobile than the '87 Robocop?

That's a stupid comparison.

That german trailer was amazing, that extra footage was pretty awesome.
