RoboCop Reboot - Part 5

Most of the reviews seem to be... pretty positive. It's a good thing Sony/MGM are lifting the review embargoes this early, to get the word out.

I know some folks were rooting for the film, but I've heard stuff about the film. The struggles between the studio and the director, and the endless reshoots, so I just knew it would've been (at best) maybe a serviceable movie unless the hand of GOD saves the day. I also heard from a few buddies from the VFX world that it was a bit of a mess. Let's say no buddy knew what they wanted. MEH.

Even from the trailers, I was thinking 'Wow this is..generic." To be fair I personally haven't seen the film, but I just don't get the vibe it'll be remembered by April of this year.

Not sure what you heard but maybe you can confirm [BLACKOUT]the director almost walked right before filming and then he was almost fired by the studio in mid-production[/BLACKOUT]

Glad that the reviews are positive because Dead or Alive I will see it this weekend, punk.

Oh and having a horrible actor as the lead didn't sway your decision much?

Who? Charlie? I don't think any less of him than someone like Jonah Hill who I hated with a passion until Moneyball, 21 Jump and TWOWS. Now when I see his name attached to a movie it ups it to a must see. I love it when actors I disregard prove themselves. Love it. But charlie didn't in PR as far as I'm concerned.

That's how it always seemed to me. Just forgettable. But, time will tell. Let's see if this ends up being another Total Recall.

For what it's worth I liked Total Recall. In the sense I liked Transformers 3 :)

I heard that, and I heard crazy stuff like the [BLACKOUT]constant hiring and firing of VFX companies -sometimes at the last minute - because the director wanted one thing, and the studio wanted another. And when the studio would hire new VFX companies, they would hire cheaper ones, so I've heard once that there was so many continuity problems that it drove Jose mad. Just poor communication al around[/BLACKOUT].

I really have a theory that Jose THOUGH he could come in as in auteur (maybe he was promised that) and give his actual take on the material. And maybe initially that was what the studio had promised.

Think about it: Why hire a man who has directed these raw, violent Brazilian movies, only to do something PG-13 and generic? After the first trailer, I was like 'That's why they hired this dude?" After all those reshoots, it was clear this is a committee film.

Yup. Sounds about right. This movie was one of the big reasons SonyImageworks India shut down as far as I heard.

It's basically like when Pete Travis remade Dredd, if after he had signed on the studio said "no, we need a PG-13 tentpole and you're gonna make it"

I still don't know what happened with Dredd. Did the studio end up making a comprise with him? The movie, after all, was rated R by the time it hit theaters.

..Or does that explain the CGI blood…and perhaps added in more 'graphic' parts later.

Total Film begs to differ, I knew critics and fans would be split down the middle on this I'm not surprised in the least bit.

No doubt some, maybe many, will like it but of the sites and people I usually trust/listen to its making me think I should wait for home release rather than rush to the cinema.

It's so weird that, despite all of the VFX tech we have now, we're less ballsy due to the economics of modern Hollywood.

Robocop was conceived as a gratuitous violent satire. Being exploitive is in its blood. By watering it down, you're just making another version of Samuel L. Jackson's Shaft.

I have no idea. He wouldn't even talk to me about it. I think it was in terms of the marketing though. LGF got that movie's dist rights for next to nothing and they didn't put much into advertising it. Either way he wasn't happy.

I guess it was a miracle that Dredd ended being shockingly enjoyable.

Nail on the head. That's precisely it. Like remaking a Blaxploitation film but toning down all the sex and violence to make it accessible to as large an audien$$$$$e as possible. It strips the essence of the story.

I don't understand it.

"We want to rekindle an old property that there's still a huge demand for but what can we do to make it even more appealing to everyone?"

If you remake something like Robocop, then remake Robocop but with modern graphics, effects and actors. It's like saying "well people want birthday cake so let's make a birthday cake but without any dairy products or icing so vegetarians and diabetics can eat it too"

At least its not a total flop going by that sample.

I THINK it'll do okay. Again, I don't it'll be remembered. Most remakes are forgotten in months especially if they're just 'okay'. I can barely remember the 'Carrie' remake. I'm trying to forget that MGM is remaking 'Poltergeist'.

No Zelda, No Ticket.

I may not even see it ever due to that.

Financially it'll do fine. They're marketing the hell out of it. All it needs is two solid weekends and it'll eventually break even.

Kinda weird that they're releasing it on Valentine's Day though. I mean, I can't see this being a good date movie.

Then again, maybe they're banking on the fact that a large percentage of this movie's audience is single, lol.

That's, that's.... sadly so true

I said before how so many of those positive reviews seemed to be artificial. Now that proper reviews are coming out, you can see I was right. Some critics actually have negative or mixed opinions of the movie. :wow:

And only time will tell how good or bad the movie ends up being. And of course, actually watching it for yourself.:cwink:

The thing to remember is, most big movies have embargoes. If you're part of the press and go to a studio screening you are under embargo from talking about the movie. Sometimes even if it's not a studio screening you're obligated to remain mute on it (which is why I can't post my NFS review from that fan screening last week).

The first wave of reactions to hit the net are always from fans who went to early screenings that press weren't invited to. Usually on their personal blogs, Facebook or just Twitter. The vast majority of the time (and this goes even for the worst movies) those reviews are A+++ positive simply because they came out of an advance screening and are so flipping happy to have seen it way early.

Then you have the "select" reviews, which happen for some movies where a studio keeps everyone to their embargo but asks several prominent outlets to post their once they are vetted and proven positive.

It's a tricky business. As much as people crap on Rotten Tomatoes, it's the best indicator of the true response to a movie.
