I have to say that Empire review is written in a totally unprofessionally way... almost like an imdb review...

Could you please explain why you feel this way? What about the review feels "imdb"?

I just read the movie is 160min. Holy crap.

That can't be right, can it?

Reading the review I can only conclude: because it was critical of a movie I like even without having seen it. :o

Not surprising that this movie is mixed so far.

Though I have a feeling about it being mixed as well, I think that the reception will be mostly positive (around a 60% on RT, or at least have a 6.0 rating). It seems that even the critics who didn't like it found something to enjoy about it at least, I'm just disappointed that the film's "heart" seems to be trying too hard and it definitely doesn't have much brains to it either (according to basically all of the reviews I've read so far). Just seems like a random chain of events connected together to make another generic and forgettable action blockbuster.

They prob just saw 1:48 and translated that to 148 minutes. Plus credits and stuff, rounds up to 160. Which is kind of... dumb

Financially it'll do fine. They're marketing the hell out of it. All it needs is two solid weekends and it'll eventually break even.

No doubt they plan on the name being enough to carry it a decent way at the BO. They have that wider audience as well they want.

I guess this remake/reboot/callitwhatyouwill is just not really aimed at fans of the original. Which is fair enough if they want a new audience I guess.

My dad definitely wants to see it on name alone. I'm sure everyone that grew up in the 80s is going out of curiosity alone.

And I did hear some kid say that he bets he says his catchphrase to his wife every night.

After last years Die Hard "effort" going to see a movie based on name alone has me really sceptical ever since lol.

I hope he enjoys it at least.:woot:

I've read a couple reviews from the Hollywood reporter and variety. They seem fairly positive but they compare it to the original every step of the way.

It opens here today and we still have no reviews in the local media. Hmmm.

4 stars from TF and DoG and 2 stars from Empire? I usually agree with TF and Empire reviews. Don't think I've ever seen them this far apart.

Same here, most they have ever been apart before has been 1 star, but 2 stars seems pretty drastic when they both rate them up to 5 stars.

Must admit last year Empire was the one i disagreed most with though, MOS, Kick-Ass 2 and Iron Man 3 I totally disagreed with them on. TF seemed to give more accurate reviews, for me anyway, so hopefully I agree more with them with Robocop as well.

I know some folks were rooting for the film, but I've heard stuff about the film. The struggles between the studio and the director, and the endless reshoots, so I just knew it would've been (at best) maybe a serviceable movie unless the hand of GOD saves the day. I also heard from a few buddies from the VFX world that it was a bit of a mess. Let's say no buddy knew what they wanted. MEH.

Even from the trailers, I was thinking 'Wow this is..generic." To be fair I personally haven't seen the film, but I just don't get the vibe it'll be remembered by April of this year.
AMEN. It didn't look promising since trailer 1.

TYPO:

I mean, "I just get the vibe it'll be remembered by April of this year."

Oooh. Reviews, reviews, reviews! C'mon, Sal. The Tigers are playing... tonight!!

I never miss a game.

Because it just has that whole "the original is a such an untouchable classic, the reboot has only one way to be: crappy" vibe going. It sounds exactly like all those comments by haters I have read for months, a year, it feels like I'm again half year ago when we saw only the trailer. He writes just the same things that haters repeated again and again as judgement before seeing the movie itself. Almost everything in this negative review is just predictable, like it was just waited to be finally written after seeing the movie.
It's perfectly fine if he doesnt like the movie, maybe I will be disappointed too, but from a big, important movie magazine I'd expect a more balanced, more, how to say, "professional" review. Maybe he felt it didnt deserve more because it's really that bad/poor on its own, but for me it just sounds like a well formulated rant by a geek on imdb.
Probably it doesnt make sense at all what I'm writing here, I just felt this way when I was reading it.

My opinion might be bias, and if it is so be it, but my stance for reboots are they need to be one of three things: just as good as the original, better than the original, or full throttle high-polish well executed entertainment. If it's worse than the original, no matter the intention of the filmmakers to do it, I feel that every fan of the original has carte blanche to crap aaaaall over it. It tells the studios that if you're going to screw with something iconic, deliver the goods. And that goes for every remake not just this one.

^ Yet you admit that you enjoyed the Total Recall remake which had not one of those three elements.
