Disney are laughing like mad now.

disney were like this for john carter - :csad:

disney are now like this for avengers -

disney will be like this after brave - :yay:

seriously, JC was such a flop and cost disney so much money that I think avengers will only break them even and only brave will make the year a success for them. no wonder heads rolled after the john carter debacle.

JC really wasn't that big of a flop when you count it's overall gross, The Avengers is more than compensating for whatever funds were lost with JC.

The problem with John Carter was more about the marketing than the movie itself. First off, titling it simply John Carter was a mistake. It's a bland title that tells the audience nothing about the movie except that it features a guy named John Carter. They shied away from the Mars connection because they were afraid that it would remind people of Mars Needs Moms, which was an uber-flop. But to be honest, I don't think enough people saw MNM in order for that to make an impact on JC's box office.

Then the trailers and commercials were simply terrible. The Super Bowl ad was bland and didn't sell the movie. I saw a fanmade trailer on YouTube that far surpassed any of the trailers Disney actually put out.

Now, in all fairness, Andrew Stanton did let the movie run over-budget, but I chalk that up more to his lack of experience with live action than anything else. And then Disney gave the movie a massive marketing budget (which is especially hilarious since the marketing was a complete failure), which just put even more pressure on JC. They should have been more careful with the movie; it's a barely-known property in this day and age, and never should have had the massive budget or expectations it carried.

I think what annoys me the most about the whole thing is that The Avengers is going to reward Disney with $1 billion even though the studio failed to provide John Carter with a proper chance to succeed.

Great story! :woot:

Hmm, why can't movie theatres just get rid of all the smaller movies to make room for TA? Is it because Disney just can't supply enough film rolls to meet the demands?

Anecdotal story, but it's based on my experience:

My theater is a small one in a small town, but it has four screens and almost always four different movies. This week, Avengers is the *only* movie playing, and it's on all four screens. That's the first time that's ever happened here. :word:

I think this movie will definitely make a billion or more.I was a little on the fence, but seeing all the people lined up at the local theatre, I wouldn't be surprised to see it break a few records.

I went to a 7pm showing. The line was decently long, but as I was leaving the theatre after the movie was over with, the line for the 10pm showing was INSANE.

It nearly reminded me of the crowd at the fan screening. No lie, the line was 10x longer than it was for my showing.I guess 10pm on a Friday is like the best time to go see a movie?Especially for most of the target audience.

Speaking from personal experiences, that was the biggest crowd I've ever seen for a CBM.The last time I saw crowds like that was when the first Spiderman movie came out way back in '02.That was the last time I saw a theatre go beyond capacity for a CBM.Just like then, people were standing and sitting in the stairways because they couldn't find a seat.

I'd be shocked at anything less than a billion

the trailer for john carter was toxic. you'd think studios would have learnt from green lantern, if effects aren't finished DON'T SHOW THEM.
terrible trailer that turned me off the movie.

Guys, I've been following the boards at box office theory. OD numbers will be revised - will be between $75-80m. OW record likely to be smashed ....

I knew that there was something off with Finke's Friday numbers.

Avengers, SMASH!!!!!!!!!!

They're saying an 80 mil opening day on boxoffice.com. Wow

Where is that? I am seeing mostly estimates of 70-65 for Friday.

the movie opening overseas is starting to look like a masterstroke. with the european rave reviews america was chomping at the bit to see this movie.

Highest day ever not including midnights, by a good margin

Saturday will also come in as either #1 or #2 day ever not including midnights

the highest grossing superhero movie being marvel feels...I dunno, right. :woot:

the only thing to cut avengers' legs is prometheus and it doesn't come out for a month

I think TA will cross $400M by the weekend that MIB3 comes out.

TA will have grossed more than Iron Man 2 worldwide by Monday or Tuesday and be the #4 Marvel movie

Will be fun to watch it outgross the Spidey flicks one by one :oldrazz:

Amen. I'm actually just as interested in seeing it take the #1 Marvel movie spot as I am for it beating TDK's WW gross to be the new superhero movie king, both of which I'd say it's pretty much a lock for now.
