The Avengers The Avengers Box-Office Prediction Thread - Part 4

I like how the article says IMAX screens which switch over to DS 'reluctantly'. Ha ha they know the DS has flop written all over it.

If I am a theater owner, I would file a class action lawsuit against Warner/IMAX for violating anti-trust laws. Forcing theaters to show DS in IMAX, will cost the theater chains business and revenue. DS is already being blasted by the critics, the movie looks beyond stupid and I'm not positive that it's total gross will break 100M.

Unless you were a fan of the TV show, no one wants to see that movie, even with Johnny Depp in it.

I agree. There were many blockbusters who had huge OW, but dropped like a brick in the following week. If The Avengers can make over 100 million in its second week, then it would be just as amazing as its 207 mil OW.
It'd be beating the 2W record by a massive percentage amount, if 110m it'd be almost double the OW percentage beat! :wow:

What is certain is that it will break another record this weekend and gross more than $76.4 million. I will place it in boundaries: as a low it should get around $87.3 and as a max it should garner $120 million. Read more at

From that article: Expect the Avengers to shatter everything again with a second-weekend gross of $105.8 million, a drop of 49.1%

Would be an amazing drop for such a huge opener.

FYI:

Today, Thursday May 10, maybe the last day to see The Avengers in IMAX 3D in your city!

Warner Bros has a deal with movie theaters to remove The Avengers in IMAX to make room for their film Dark Shadows, so today maybe the last day to see Avengers in IMAX 3D in most cities.

I've checked my city, and the 2 films occupying IMAX for the weekend will be Dark Shadows, and Wrath of the Titans (another WB film which has been out since March). No sign of The Avengers IMAX 3D in my city.

I posted numerous IMAX 3D Reviews for The Avengers from critics here (93% Fresh so far):

We've all been a part of The Avengers making history. IMAX 3D is an experience you'll never want to miss.

Marvel's THE AVENGERS has now assembled $775.4M worldwide--$517.8M Int'l, $257.6M Domestic

Oh please it will return to IMAX before the release of the DVD & Blu-Ray

I'm not sure about that.

And.. REALLY? Wrath of the Titans is still in IMAX? That movie sucked. WTH WB?!?

Lets see just how little Dark Shadows make. If Dark Shadows flops completely. IMAX will be begging to put The Avengers back in IMAX

So we they still need $224,600,000 to get to 1 billion right? Is that still possible now that the movie is on it's 2nd week?

They can keep begging, but they have a contract with Warner Bros.

I honestly have no idea how this will work, but if WB tells the theaters to keep showing DS or WOTT in IMAX, the theaters will have to honor it.

Possible as in certain, yes.

Why would anyone want to see Dark Shadows at ALL, let alone in IMAX...?

Crap is crap. Doesn't matter how big the screen is. :yay:

Well I guess we have to deal with it.

Not trying to be negative but how is that possible? :p

Who ever agreed to those contracts. Should be fired

It wouldn't surprise me if these numbers end up being on the high end. There's still a lot of excitement for this movie, and little competition to speak of.

Caught it for the second time last night, packed house on a Wednesday.

I´m a Burton fan. Loved Alice and liked several things about Apes. Liked DS trailer too. I want to see it, and others want too. If its crap, its crap, i dont know yet, but Burton must really put an effort to disapoint me.

This was discussed several days back, your article is incorrect Disney has an agreement to share screens.

Warner isn't stupid because they will know they would face a lawsuit if they forced theaters to only show DS.

Right^^. I thought there was an article about this agreement just a couple days ago. Something like they can share screens while WB gets to run theirs longer.

Amazing.
Honestly, who thought it would perform this good?
I didn't.

I've confirmed at least 5 different AMC theaters, in my area will be showing Avengers in IMAX 3D over the weekend.

As I said no one is going to see DS in IMAX, let alone see it in theaters. Warner had the agreement for their bigger tent pole movies. I guarantee you if Warner forced theaters to drop Avengers they would face a massive lawsuit and they would lose for violation of anti trust laws.

Warner agreed to share screens with Disney, and it looks like most of the locations I'm seeing DS is limited to one to two IMAX screenings per day.

100 million this weekend doesn't seem that impossible to me. I'm seeing it again today. Woo hoo

Sorry if I'm asking too many questions :p But what if DS really sucked? Do the theaters have the right to drop the movie even though they have a contract? I mean they will also lose money is DS flops so why even bother?

Freudian slip?
