The Avengers The Avengers Box-Office Prediction Thread - Part 4

I've confirmed at least 5 different AMC theaters, in my area will be showing Avengers in IMAX 3D over the weekend.

As I said no one is going to see DS in IMAX, let alone see it in theaters. Warner had the agreement for their bigger tent pole movies. I guarantee you if Warner forced theaters to drop Avengers they would face a massive lawsuit and they would lose for violation of anti trust laws.

Warner agreed to share screens with Disney, and it looks like most of the locations I'm seeing DS is limited to one to two IMAX screenings per day.
I've read the same thing. It just depends on your location though.

I'm from Riverside County which is 45 mins from Los Angeles County, and we only got 2 theaters with IMAX, and none of those 2 have The Avengers in IMAX after today. They will be showing DS and WOTT instead starting tomorrow.

Sucks for me.

So it just depends in your city.

OH I MEAN DS not DK! :p
Speaking of TDK...

Had no idea it ran from July 18, 2008 thru March 5, 2009.

That's almost 8.5 months straight!

Can't really pinpoint when it was re-released again, or if it was re-release twice...

Marvel's THE AVENGERS has now assembled $775.4M worldwide--$517.8M Int'l, $257.6M Domestic

source?

If this is accurate, it made 13.6 M domestic, and 0 dollars ww yesterday.

What time does boxofficemojo usually release their daily numbers?

Because of the Oscars they re-released in December/January. Not uncommon for a film released earlier in the year trying to get buzz for the Oscars.

Alot of films have a late December limited release to qualify for the Oscars and then have a wide release in Jan/Feb, which is unfair to most of the films released earlier in the year.

how did WB make such a deal with IMAX? the BFI in london (largest in the country) has dark shadows listed and TDKR listed but no sign of the ASM. that's crazy as SM3 still (I think) has the IMAX record.

taking mum along to see it tomorrow

adding an extra 18 quid to the coffers :woot:

she not seen any of the lead up movies apart from iron man 1 and does not know the characters really apart from iron man and hulk

as a general audience member, wonder if she will like it?

Does WB realize no one wants to watch that stupid Dark Shadows movie in IMAX?

At the rate Avengers is raking in cash what I want to vote on isn't UP there. :D

that should be directed at the IMAX theatres as WB aren't going to pull their own movie. dark shadows two weeks after the avengers was pretty stupid if you ask me, 3 weeks would have been safer.

I don't know, but I guarantee the theater franchise owners are screaming about this. Think of all the non WB big money makers that come out, that people pay to see on IMAX, and to force the theater chains to put on films that will likely be half empty when they have a film like Avengers that will sell out.

Like I said, if I'm a theater owner I am suing IMAX/WB over this, because that is killing their revenue.

dark shadows could surprise a lot of poeple, look at pirates 1, who predicted that that would blow up?

Exhibitor Relations (I just can't link where I am at the moment), Yeah, it's without the most recent international numbers.

Edit: Also Boxoffice.com now showing $13,612,910 & $257,627,807 total.

The theater I go to will still have The Avengers playing in IMAX 3D over the weekend but the number of showtimes will drop to three times a day. Last weekend it was five or six times. Dark Shadows will be playing in a regular theater.

Not trying to be negative but how is that possible? :p

Its one billion worldwide. By the end of today it should be around $800M worldwide. Over this weekend it should be around $100M domestic alone, slightly less overseas as that is entering the third week. Hey Presto, 1 bill by next week at least.

I will be very annoyed if ASM isn't at my IMAX. so far this year they will have shown; wrath of the titans (which flopped) john carter (which flopped) prometheus (hooray) and dark shadows and who knows how that will do and they aren't listed ASM when the last spidey movie broke IMAX records. that doesn't make any sense.

and officially marvel's most successful movie with SM3 in second place

Posted the same question on BOM, and I agree to their response that WB also wanted to push TDK over the $1 Billion mark.

============

Looking at TDK's Box Office Chart closely, looks like the re-release and re-re-release dates were:

1st - November 14, 2008 = getting a 220+ jump in screens.

2nd - January 23, 2009 = getting over 340+ more screens.

Prior to the re-release and re-re-releases, it made $528.3 million domestically and just $996.9 million globally; but after both releases it jumped up to $533.3 million domestic, $1 billion globally which is an extra $5 million in the box office.

I know Disney doesn't need to re-release much less re-re-release The Avengers to get $600 million domestically, but if they did could they also a mass an extra $5 - $8 million too? It's not much in this industry's standard but that still is cool cash of $$$ to have.

P.S.

And yes I agree it was WB trying to get $1 billion world wide which that extra $5 million did by putting TDK over the mark by $1.9 million.

I think that it would be foolish to not have it in IMAX. I mean, TASM is definitely the underdog superhero flick this summer, but it's been proven that even sub-par spidey films make dough. It would be a foollish buisness decision not to have it IMAX.

ASM is the true dark horse this year as no one has any idea how it will do.
